yes the size of the planter does effect the size of the plant if the plant has no where for the roots to go it wont be able to grow any taller as for the foliage question i dont know why that happens and the time fame can be the same if you choose it to be but hydro does grow faster and larger...

when you top the main stalk is supposed to just stop growth and instead of sending all the hormones straight up they go to the top then to the closest stalks to make the closest stalks the new main stalks
