Most people I've seen put the cube in growing medium. I personally try to avoid mixing two mediums with different water retaining propperties, so I'd germinate straight in medium with just a small piece of rockwool to help keep the seed in place untill it has enough roots to suport itself.

I don't have much personal expirience but as far as I can see, general concensus is 1 to 2 inches below the botom. They say plants need that extra air to mantain optimal gases exchange.

Actually I change buckets because i'm lazy. This way I can prepare fresh res in a clean bucket a day before, switch buckets, and clean old bucket whenever I feel up for it.

So, if I'm using just a generic EWC and great white (its hard to come by different products where I live), perhaps I should brew with EWC only for the bacteria and add great white directly to the res for the funghi.

I was just thinking something similar. How much volume does a well developed root system take? If I fill an empty bucket to the 1 inch from the net pot botom mark and put a plant with a large root system in, will my water level rise much?
