Have you tried witha piece of a dense cloth? Coffe filter will definately filter out all the EWC particles but I'm worried it might filter out other stuff we dont want filtered out.

I think you are doing OK. Seedlings aparently dont like nutes, but I think you really have to put a lot in to kill them. I grew a lot of different plants I didn't care that much about straight in potting soil that always contains some nutes, and never had them burnt or anything.
