First MJ Grow. 1200W HID, x5 Vanilla Kush x1 Super Lemon Haze

The girls are really showing now. It is time to dust off the maternity clothes, because they have been eating quite a few nutes.

I think the ppm on nutrients are now up to 800. I've been giving them 2tsp of gyna-gro grow formula (7-9-6) and 1 1/4tsp pro-tekt silicate (0-0-3). Water is phed to 6.0-6.2.

The x2 600w HPS lights have been as close as 14 inches (was gone for the 4th of july and they grew a lot) and are being kept at an average of 17 in from the canopy.



As you can see they have definitely begun flowering and haven't really begun to stretch that much yet. They next couple of weeks should be interesting as I start to tie down branches in order to keep as even a canopy as possible. Want those lights to be right on top of them as soon as the temperature drops below 90F.

The temps today topped out at 96F outside. in the closet they reached a max of 81 for only a couple hours. Tomorrow it is suppose to be 98. I think with the airflow it should be fine.

What is the highest temps until i should be worried (and how long)?

Also, 95% of all space in the closet is full. Barely any canopy space left. They are stretching, but not much yet. New grows internodal spacing is longer than established growth.

Does previous growth stretch or is it only newly formed growth that elongates?

There are sucker growing points coming from the very bottom of the plant. I'm toying with the idea of cutting these tops while they are small, because I don't think they can catch up to the canopy above. My impression is that these tops when they flower will produce airy popcorn buds.

How do you fell about cutting these bud sites off before they form? Will the plant divert more energy towards make denser/bigger buds on the top of the plants? (I do not cut fan leaves off unless they have yellowed off and will fall).

MJ is temp tolorant up to 90F as temps go higher it simply goes dormat or shuts down and waits unless there is more CO2 available which raises the temp tolorance of the plant

the stretch can affect the whole plant which will vary with strains but mostly affects new growth

lot of folks cut them, I would not, instead I would do a double harvest cutting the top when done then lowering the light and finishing the bottom

I'm toying with this idea. However, there are some barriers. First off, I left them in veg for a long time so the canopy will be much thicker than light can penetrate. In this case, will the chlorophyll be redistributed from leaves lower down (kind of thinking out loud)?

Main reason why dual harvest might be sticky is in oregon our mj laws state as soon as plant matter is removed from plant it become schedule II narcotic (wet or dry, fan leaf or stem). We have a subsection of our medical cannabis laws which allows us to basically hang our plants whole and keep them in the realm of plants (even if cut to dry) and not have to worry about weight limits and such.

Thanks for the quick answer on the stretch and temps. I'll hold off on the cutting for now because it is not hurting anything. However, when flowers start to form I'll reevaluate what the chances of mildew/ mold are at 50% humidity 78F. Thanks.

ok well I would say that rule/law sucks and you should be ok with 50% (though lower would be better) it iwould be higher than 55 that I would worry about, ie; I have been monitoring humidity in my new basement as I build my new garden and it is steady at 65 which will be great for veggin but I now know that I need a de-humidifier for flowering (now on my shopping list)

I'm also in a basement and the relative humidity hovers around 65% also (at 62-68F). However, in the closet under the lights even with the air circulating twice a minute the lights suck it right out of the air. What I really think is that the temps are higher so the RH is lower simply because the air can hold more water, but either way. We always talk in percents, but does it make a difference how much actual water is in the air?

I already have to buy a carbon filter, which will be my last large purchase and don't want to buy an industrial dehumidifier.

Good call on the basement. I would need a major AC to cool down any other room in my house. Can't wait to follow your journal.

What is everyones opinion on light leaks and light exposure in the dark period. The closet door was left open last night there was substantial exposure to incandescent light. Two weeks in and flower formation has only slightly started.

I know it stresses them and may cause hermies. I know it may cause revert to veg in large doses. Is there any research on light exposure and impact on development/ yield? Much appreciated to everyone who answers.. know it is not a big deal, but would like to know more about it...

Incandesents are mostly infrared light/heat, the part of the spectrum that tells a plant to stretch (why they stretch so much when people try to grow with em) IMO will cause no harm

Very nice!!! i was thinkin of doin vanilla kush on my next round. I got 1 SLH seed waiting too be germinated soon for the next rotation. I love the set up also. VERY nice! I wish i had more room. All i have is a one room apt. I have a 6' x 2' area but atleast i got lucky with 8' ceilings.

You should be okay if this doesn't happen anymore. If they do try to reveg then yes it can hurt your yield. btw I like your set-up, its very clean and well thought out. Iv been lurking around your grow and thought id let you know im subd and will stick around for the duration... good job so far keep it up.

I am incredibly happy with the amount of control you can have in basement grows. It is all about the baseline temps and humidity. The only variable I am worried about is humidity, which is only slightly higher than where I want it (lower than standard practices) in the off period of late flowering.

I don't think it will either. Most anecdotal incidences I've tracked down are when someone's timer allows for full lights on in off period and if it does not happen consistently then there is little harm done. On another note, my outside tomatoes are looking so much better now that we have had several full weeks of intense sun. I put them outside a little over 4 weeks ago at 8-11" and we had nothing but rain for a week. They looked miserable. Should of used hoop houses. Now they are 4 feet and growing.

I might think about running 4-5 untopped plants with fluorescent side-lighting and a couple of 600s in that space (if you are limited by medical mj laws as I am.) It is a large initial investment , but yield would be significant with a tall skinny variety of cannabis.

Thank you and welcome. I think the light interruption is okay too. Just freaked out like any noob would on their first crop. I'm glad you have gone from lurking to commenting. I lurk more than i should even when I have something constructive to say. It is hard for me to follow a dozen threads when I get super busy. Hope to hear from you.
