DJ's LED medical grow

Mini update, I see trichs. I doubt i can get my phone to see them like I can, but they're there. Pics tomorrow or Tues.

The friend that helped me while I was on vacation (a week ago) saw the ladies tonight, and a "Holy shit" was the response.

2nd feed including the PK13/14, they bounced back from the post feed droop within a couple hours.

Currently the light can't get any higher, and the closest tip is ~14" away, most being 16-18" away. From the top of the plant, the short one is 15", tall one 16"... If you include the pots ~26"

I think I'll pull a couple extra fans from the inside, and then let it shed it's leaves as it wants to. Under growth is more than I expected, but the SGS pushes light through a LOT of foliage.

As long as you still get the coverage you need, I think it's awesome to have them as close as possible. You have a good light with good chips, you shouldn't have a problem.
Can't wait to see the girls.

Quick recap of the last 50+ days

Ok, now onto what they look like today (Week 8, Day 6, Day 54 overall) ... a tad taco'd

Readjusted a couple LST wires and now

12/12, 155W, temps are manageable but not great, humidity is relatively under control, no bug issues to report, no mold issues to report. Last feed was 1140ppm/5.9pH.

Note worthy mention, since I've been feeding at 5.8-5.9pH, leave deformities stopped. They're all well shaped and a great color.

They seem to be happy, and I'm all giddy about it.

I think it's time to get some lady bugs.

I saw one bug that I had not seen previously, wasn't sure what it was. Now I've found a few more, and killed the ones I've found. They're tiny little tan-ish bastards that 5 of 6 have been on the underside of the leaves. They all were moving, but so small that comparing them to a grain of rice would be like a Kia Forte Vs School Bus.

I think they're aphids, but I can't really tell... I opened my mouth too soon on the "no bug issues to speak of"
I saw one a couple days ago, and five today. I am about to remove a couple fans that are looking shady, but it's hard to tell exactly what the issues are. RH has been high with the lights off, this is a pretty resilient strain to mold, but I feel like I'm pushing the safety net.

Thrips maybe. Lady bugs are fun and you will get some cool photos for sure. I say yes or even go praying mantis if going the predator route.

Thrips slipped the mind, that looks like what I've been finding.

I tried to take a pic, or pics of the bastards. I found a dozen more. Interesting though, they seemed to be found on only fan leaves, and knew I was after them.

A tad of defoliation. It was defoliation or removal of lower growth ... I opted for defoliation. Readjusted the LST wires a tad, the stems aren't "moveable" anymore, more or less just adjusting preload.

I just got them for the time this year. I had like 3 bag beans that I just put on my patio to start and they got them out there. Mine had like a little mucus like shine on a couple leaves and some lighter green marks. I just tossed the seedling out cause I didn't want to deal with the problem or transfer to my rooms. I was told spinosad works for them.

Looks like I'm making a run to the store tomorrow after work.

They have brands that contain spinosad, let's do an Adult Social Study and see what they recommend(when I go in with a good idea of what I want). The Capt Jack's Deadbug Brew caught my attention.

... convenient or ironic that the time they close is when my light turns on?

I bought the Capt Jacks DeadBug (with Spinosad ... "Spin-OH-sid") after looking at the other options.

One of the other alternatives is the FoxFarms Don't Bug Me. So we're going on a tangent for a sec, and hopefully somebody will read this and choose other alternatives.
I read the label in the store, and about laughed out loud. This is from their website
FoxFarm is proud to offer a safe, modern, natural insect spray that can be used indoors and out.
Here's the label:
http://www.planetnatural.com/wp-content/uploads/dont-bug-me-label.pdf

They also claim it can be used up to, and including the day of, harvest.
Basically, if you come in contact with it, you should contact poison control. I can't spray my plants and not be contaminated, so why would I use the product?

Also, since I'm ranting, the "well reputed" store doesn't have normal hand spray bottles. They have fancy "360 degree" sprayers, and all the options of big reservoir sprayers, but not a plain, normal sprayer.

like this

So, I found one elsewhere. The owner quickly referred me to Walgreens to find one, then he looked at me like I was the weird one. This time around the employee that couldn't help me last time, could this time.

Back on topic.

The data attached doesn't specify when to apply, this will actually be the first time I have misted water or any product on these plants. It says to, "apply when listed pests are present" ... and looks like 3-4 days between sprays on any "fruit bearing" crop where there is not a rind/external non-edible layer.

Sorry if I missed this, but did you get a better ID of what those bugs are?

Fun to see this thread. I built a 300W LED panel for a friend for his Med closet grow.

Are you running the same medium / nutes next time also?

Not really, no. They have the characteristics of Thrips, so I acted ASAP.

They got a dose of Capt Jack today, I set them under some CFLs by a fan to dry, then put them back under the LED. I killed off any that I could see after. They should get sprayed again in ~4 days, and next feed will be tomorrow or Friday. I used purified(not softened) water, 20oz H20 + 7.5mL Capt Jack. Standard ratio is 16oz + 0.25oz.

They have been back under the LED for a couple hours now, and seem as happy as they always have been.

I do need to get a loupe/mic to look closer.

Side note, seeing more trichs every day! I'm going to try my best to get a legit lab test on this when I'm done. According to the supplier, THC can reach 18%, no notes on CBD. I didn't start this as a potency challenge, but I'd like to know my benchmark.

EDIT: The Capt Jack is not JUST for Thrips, it basically covers anything that eats plant material, and is organic, no worries on stage of growth.

Also not sure on what nutrients for the next run. I have considered a lot of options for the next run, but I do know a couple things will change. The changes that I know will happen are all physical, the cabinet needs some tweaks. I can't have everything I want, plain and simple. I would love to do hydro, but I WANT living organics... and a greenhouse. Somehow I ended up with a highpower LED in a tiny box and some plants trying to take over it. The coco and airpots are not going away for now, I'm quite happy with them. I might seek a replacement/alternative to Canna's Boost. It is expensive by volume, and weak by PPM. I don't have data to compare it to, but I feel there are better options. I am pretty sure the next beans I'll pop are either ChemDawg I got "free" or El Alquimista's that came as freebies with my order of the current WW's. The freebies are feminized, vs bagseed w/ potential males/herms ... so I lean towards fem beans.

Tall one moved to the front, ~17" tall, ~13" from the panel...

They had a sad day, I went too long between feeds. (all droopy and "sad")

Attempting to get a pic of trichs

This one has three fans coming from one node.

Undergrowth development, suppercropping and adjustments to "see" light.

They perked back up within an hour of feeding, it was weird to watch.

Roots Organic Coco Coir + Black Gold Perlite, in Superoots Airpots, 7.5L in size(they fit inside a 5gal bucket).
Canna Nutrients: Coco A + B, Rhizotonic, Cannazym, Boost, PK13/14.
SaferGro pH Down (not currently needed)
General Organics CaMg+
House And Garden Drip Clean

Feeds are every 3-4 days. I bottom feed by dunking into a 5gal bucket, it's a tad snug, but it almost doubles absorption from top feeding(for me).

The bug issue seems to be in remission. They will be sprayed again in 2-3 days, Capt Jack seems to live up to it's name.

I thought about jumping on the supersoil bandwagon, but coco won me over. I don't have a problem with it, this combo just seemed to balance my wants and needs well.

I'll keep this updated, ~6 weeks to go... I think.
