Generally, no, to at least the cooling question, but probably to the heating question too (not sure as my minis are not heat pumps). Most mini splits only run down to 11f (about -10c) but in my experence it always says in the technical specs of the individual unit

Over the phone the Ushio Rep said any HPS S52 Electronic ballast but she did not sound too sure.

Well according to the video the Ushio bulbs can be used but not Gavita bulbs. And on Ushio's website they list the ballast type as HPS S52 Electronic which would lead me to believe that any electronic ballast would work for it. in the video they were running it on 1100w, I wonder if you could...

You're gonna need a DE ballast. Gavita, Phantom, Nanolux, Solis Tek, and im sure many more make them now. You can buy DE ballasts that are compatible with standard MH and HPS bulbs but i dont believe u can plug DE bulb into just any digital ballast not designed for it.

ur saying this grower would not want to moniter the number of grams he gets per watt to know if he does better or worse than last time? its simply a measure of yield compared to electricity used. it can be very useful to know.

Hydrofarm just wants you to but their ballast. You wont have any problem other than possibly needing an adapter if the plug type is different.
