Bernie Sanders’ Political Revolution Is Gaining Ground

"While the Democratic Party struggles to find its bearings under a Trump presidency and Republican-controlled Congress, Bernie Sanders’ political revolution is gaining momentum, attracting enthusiasm, and finding success.

During this month’s Senate recess, Sanders has showed no signs of slowing down. He is scheduled to speak at town halls in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan next week on a variety of issues, including jobs, labor union rights, and Medicare for all. On Labor Day weekend, he plans to stop in New Hampshire for an AFL-CIO breakfast and will be in Iowa on August 31 to promote his book for teens, a guide for political revolution.

Sanders has continued his grassroots campaign style into Trump’s presidency, connecting with voters, making appearances at town halls and supporting other progressive candidates across the country. While it remains to be seen if Sanders will run for president in 2020, he is continuing his campaign’s style of talking directly to voters about meaningful policy issues.

Sanders’ political organization, Our Revolution, which was founded in August 2016, has already achieved significant victories, against both Republicans and establishment Democrats. At the local level, the organization has seen success with Chokwe Lumumba winning his election for mayor of Jackson, Miss., and Christine Pellegrino won a New York State Assembly race in a district that voted for Donald Trump in 2016. Our Revolution backed several successful first time political candidates in city councils across the country, including Ali Dieng to Burlington’s City Council in June 2017 and Khalid Kamau to South Fulton City Council in April 2017. The organization endorsed 59 successful candidates in 2016 and 16 so far in 2017. Further, in two special congressional elections, James Thompson’s campaign in Kansas and Rob Quist’s campaign in Montana, progressives outperformed expectations, helping to mitigate the false narrative that progressive candidates can’t compete against Republicans in Republican strongholds.

Our Revolution won’t endorse 2018 midterm congressional candidates until next year, but Brand New Congress, an organization founded by former Sanders staffers, is supporting several candidates looking to unseat incumbents in Congress who have abandoned their voters. They are supporting Paula Jean Swearengin in her race against Sen. Joe Manchin and 10 candidates for the House of Representatives in Missouri, New York, Florida, Texas, Washington, Arkansas and Pennsylvania.

Due to his presidential bid, Bernie Sanders and his supporters now have a massive grassroots infrastructure that they can use to mobilize supporters. Trump’s presidency has emboldened Sanders’ political revolution; Sanders’ popularity has surged and organizations have emerged out of his movement. While establishment Democrats continue to denigrate progressives and insist that it isn’t the right time for progressive politics, Sanders‘ political movement is prevailing because it offers hope for a better America. Millions of Americans are standing up in support of a political revolution that seeks to improve the lives of every American, challenge the status quo, and push for policies that leave no one behind.

So...why did Justice Democrats register with the FEC to accept unlimited donations from individuals and corporations if they could've just registered as a normal PAC?

Grass roots is the way to grow a third party. Very interesting. This strategy at least is one that can be recognized and has precedence of being successful. The populist movement of the late 1800's-early 1900's for example.

So Sanders strategy seems to be to tear apart the Democratic party and replace it with this one eventually. Meanwhile Republicans will have their way. I wonder how many people will see the destruction of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid and all the other actions they want to do as in their self interest.

"Establishment Democrats continue to denigrate progressives". This line pops out as another piece of the Sandernista thought guide shit. Who are these establishment democrats and who did they denigrate?

I'm still asking how come Bernie couldn't attract African American, Hispanic and women's votes in 2016 and what he's doing to bring them into Our Revolution?

Iowa, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.

He ought to include Oregon. We are 2% African American here. Fits in well with Bernie's crowd.

that's like putting one drop of coffee in a gallon of cream. lol.

bernie ain't gonna win shit. his time has come and gone. Dems need somebody less than the AARP minimum age as a candidate
I don't think he's planning to run as a Democrat next time. Just reading his statements, it doesn't sound like he's trying to build bridges that would help win the Democratic Party nomination.

It is true that a third party has to build a base from the grass roots up. I think what he's doing can be effective.

I have kids, family, elders that are all depend on one way or another on programs Republicans are planning to smash. I don't think Our Revolution will do much to stop Republican efforts to kill my mom and give my kids a second rate education. Just saying, this is the movement for the privileged.

let's be honest though. you'll never have a 3 rd party that will ever garner 60 plus million votes. less than half of Americans even bother to vote.
for better or worse, we are a 2 party country.
In 20 years it might. Assuming we still have a Democracy by then. Grassroots activism is an effective method of enacting change. This is how the Republican Party got started in the first place. Also the Progressive Movement brought us quite a few reforms in government around the turn of the last century.

With the demise of the Democratic Party as Sanders seems to have plans to do, we'd have a two party system in about 30 years maybe less. For a while it would just be Republicans, I guess.

My mom won't live long after Ryan cuts Medicaid, also I've been planning for my kid's to get a good education and go to college so I'm not exactly on board with letting Republicans own the government for the next couple of decades.

my parents voted for trump and they are on medicare/blue cross. both have bad pre existing conditions too. it's hard not to laugh at them but they voted against their own best interests.

i think a young-ish Dem candidate needs to run on 2 ideals: free healthcare for all , tax cuts for low and middle class. Trump has set the bar so low that I find it hard to believe they couldn't win in '20. maybe throw in instead of spending money on unwinnable wars in the ME, we are going to repair all of our crumbling infrastructure. and put up signs: " this bridge repair in Anytown USA is being funded instead of buying 1 F18 fighter "

They may have seen the error of their ways.

If they haven't, certainly many like them have.

This ship is finally starting to turn.
