Not a lot of pics yet. But enough to tell the tale. I've been working hard trying to dial things in, finish up the update to my cabinet build journal (shameless plug) and keep these five beautiful girls alive! For those who like to read the last page first here's my last journal update:

Date: 4/15/10 1:45pm
Water Temp: 70.3*
PH: 6.39
TDS: 352ppm
EC: 730
Air Temp: 79*
RelHum: 44%

Notes: Plants under dome with wet paper towels. Filtered tap water, PH adjusted from 8.3. No nutes.

Okay...no distractions for 35 minutes so here we go.

Day 1

I knew I had one evenings worth of work to do and to give me the motivation, I went ahead and purchased my clones. I wanted to stay away from Sativa dominant strains so between two different dispensaries I was able to get five different strains to experiment with. 3 clones are in 1" rockwool cubes and the other two are in a material I'm not familiar with but it's brown, spongy, seemingly inorganic and holds itself together well. Here is one shot before buttoning up the cabinet for the first night.

One further back. You can see the air tube coming in through the passive air intake. I also raised the container up closer to the lights. However, this is the mother reservoir, it will eventually sit on the bottom and I'll have a separate clone area. 7-up can is for perspective. The fan on the left is on low to keep air moving. 79* and 36%rh is not great but it's really late. Everything is moist and perky, water will be ready tomorrow so all will be good and nothing to worry about....sound right?

One last peek before going to bed. 75* and 38%rh....it's getting better. Maybe the bubbling water will help bring up the rh through the night.

Just an aside (okay shameless plug) the nights work included hanging the Mylar, getting the air pump, stones and water set up to "breathe" and then also to play around with the exhaust tubing in the back. Shown just below. All the connections fit nice and snug and it's pretty rigid. Tomorrow I'll install strapping to hold them in place just in case.........DAY 2 Good morning all.

We're all running a bit late so I need to rush out the door. I run into the garage to grab a few "supplies" bongsmilie for the day. I should peek in and look but I gotta go...."hey what's that smell...kinda warm". I look behind the cabinet and all the PVC had leaned over and pulled off the cabinet and had come crashing down over night, including the exhaust fans! OMG! I pull open the doors and 89* and the inside fan is just blowing like a desert wind! Ugh. :wall: The 3 clones in rockwool in baggies are a bit droopy (especially Flower) but the Blueberry and PurpExtreme were both bent over at the waist "touching their toes" and all leaves hung wilted like old spinach....#@#%@@#$@#! I grabbed them took them to the sink and started drizzling water on the medium until I got it back to a nice moist, not soaked, state. I got the fans reattached, the temp back down, ladies back inside and left for work and hoped for the best.

I'm so glad I'm on half days right now. I run home at 1:00, look inside and LIFE!!! A couple of toasty leaves but we're back in business!!! Now to deal with the humidity issue. After trying a few different things the best result was laying down damp paper towels and covering them with another container. The bottom left and center clones are the DJ's Blueberry and Purple Extreme alive and well.

With the cover off. Flower (back right) still looks a bit droopy, but wouldn't you if you smelled like skunk? ;-)

Up close and personal.

Kandy Kush-looks unscathed with active node sites.

Flower is actually looking pretty good.

Larry OG - Looking good!

Purple Extreme - Imagine her bent over from below the big fan leaf on the left and shriveled up. This has got to be an amazing recovery.

And last but not least - our true survivor DJ's Blueberry. I almost tossed her because her leaves were just little balls laying on the top of the lid. You'll note the 2 crispy leaves on the bottom right. This clone already looks like a cola. She is so bushy and has so many little leaves growing off of her.

Okay that brings us through yesterday pretty much and I fear if I don't submit soon I'll lose the post. Next post I'll talk about the grow plan a bit. And go through my fiddling with the water and my Hanna meter. I hope you are enjoying the drama as much as me. :bigjoint:

Well i have to say now that iv finally read your grow thread properly (as unfortunately i couldent get any weed this evening) another outstanding piece of work man +rep just for showing that a person can make a growroom pretty much any way they imagine it :bigjoint:

First i have to say NICE SAVE on the babies the other morning :D

Also(From Experience) The Sour Diesel and the Durban Poision are both trippy and narcotic in effect garunteed to knock you off your feet into a fit of giggles EVERY TIME. also that green crack looks interesting . (I was actually born in africa in the town of Durban so i definately know the poision all too well :) )

Keep up the good work everything looks like you will be a great success at the moment u definately do know your stuff. Good idea avoiding sativas, unless u want that whole garage full of plants :D .

Grow Well :peace:

PS . a sidenote on the Sour Diesel Strain, if you smoke a healthy sized joint you're almost garuneed a good instant sleep (Screw Ambien):bigjoint:

Yup everything is rock'n and roll'n. Larry OG is going nuts already with 3/4" roots outside the netpot.

I've had them in PH neutral water for the last few days so I could flush out anything they started in before me. The PH started at 5.7 and climbed up to 7.1, I dropped it back to 5.8 and it leveled off at 6.4 by yesterday morning but has been holding steady.

This afternoon I lifted the lid to check things out and the water is just slightly murky so I'm going to do a res change tonight. Since I don't have any water ready to go, I'm going to run out now and get 5 gallons.

I'm going to start tonight with 1/4 strength nutes using the TechnaFlora recipe for cuttings. At this stage it also calls for foliar feeding and since I'm having issues keeping humidity up I think I'll whip up a batch of 1/4 strength of that as well and occasionally mist them. It's around 37% outside and I've been able to keep it between 40-45 with wet paper towels so I'm sure this can only help.

While I'm at it, I need to pick up a whole bunch of mixing things, storage things and spraying things.

I've got more pics to put up plus the ones coming up for tonight.

I cant help but notice your water is exposed to light which promotes algae growth in your nutrient rich water so PLEASE cover your girls shame before you have a problem :bigjoint: also your ph range is good i know hydro like a slightly more alkaline environment so all good there :D

You don't think 2 layers of tape is enough? I'll have to go check again :bigjoint:.

That's good to hear on the PH. I think it was going crazy because of them flushing whatever was in the medium before I got them. My next res change should tell me if things settle out.

:hump: nice bro. kepp up the good work
Hey Goof, thanks for stopping by. So how are you enjoying your last crop? bongsmilie:eyesmoke:

I Think 2 layers of tape is good, im not sure how light tight duct tape is though, im thinking black plastic or black duct tape will do you a lot of favours here, you might well be 100% ok with what you've already done .Just a thought though .

idk if it's just my computer, but in your last update, i didn't see any pics of the girls...it just showed pics of some bud (and great looking bud at that!) anyways, that blue berry is a fuckin' warrior! i wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be one of your best!

check back in a few,

Don't I know it SmokesLikeBob. I'm hoping Admin can fix it soon if at all. It happened in both journals too as well as a bunch of other threads I'm watching. click==> https://www.rollitup.org/support/323486-journal-pics-wrong-since-site.html <==click

I'm afraid to post more story with pics until things settle out. However, my albums are up to date. However, they don't upload in the same order any more either so it's hard to get through the story.

I have a lot of story and pics to catch up on including today's little disaster. Girls are all growing roots like mad.

Today's disaster. Purple Extreme lost all of her roots! I was doing close inspection today and noticed that the original roots must have died during my first day heat disaster because they were brown, slimy and smelled like fish tank. All the other roots newer roots were nice and white and smell "fresh" but a little thinner than all the rest of the clones. Rather than let the old roots rot I figured I'd better do a bit of surgery and cut that stuff away. While I was removing the neoprene disk, the entire stem just slipped out of that brown, spongy medium....with no roots!! After cutting open the brown stuff, there were only 3 scraggly roots that appeared to be attached. Now I know why she's been looking so yellow!!

Without thinking twice, I quickly cut back the stem about 1 1/4" below the bottom fresh node with a 45* cut, dipped it in cloning gel, slipped it back into the neoprene disk. Keep your fingers crossed and hope she starts some new roots. She's still perky, just a bit yellow.

Because of this I gently tugged on the rest of them and they are all firmly rooted.

I guess it's time to start setting up my cloning area because I want to move the rest of them from a rooting formula to a vegging formula.

More to come as soon as the site settles down.

Okay folks. I've been waiting for things to settle out before continuing this journal. All the work I put into it is meaningless unless the pics match the text. Admin won't give a time frame when they will have them fixed so I'm just going to go with the flow and transcribe this into my personal journal as this is the vision of the site. I will now continue here with my journal and as soon as the transcription is caught up, I'll ask you to subscribe to that journal as I will let this go. Thanks to all who have been supporting me. And we now continue.....
====================================================

Again let's go to the last page for a bit before I continue from where I left off last Friday. Here are the girls as of 4/20. I was hoping to show them to you on that day. Oh well.

Finally with pics back in place I am going to proceed here. All the pics I posted in my Journal are no longer there so I'm again "going with the flow". Here are the latest comments I posted there. I'll try to do a quick catch up without losing too many details.

Continuing.....

Today is Fri Apr 17 and it's time to start thinking nutes. Up to this point, the girls have been in PH neutral water. I'll be going with 1/4 strength with the TechnaFlora Seedling recipe. I don't want to start crazy or anything. I'll be doing a tank change shortly.

Recipe calls for 1 tsp per gal of Sugar Daddy and Root 66. I'll be starting with 1 tsp in 4 gal. I plan on adding 1 tsp each every two days until we are at full power.

Also a solution of ThriveAlive Green will be mixed up for foliar feeding.

Friday afternoon (4/16) shot of the ladies. I'm still having issues keeping the humidity up. I need to start looking for a good DIY solution. But air temps seem to be in check.

Second pic shows us root are growing.

I'm trying out some experiments with air stones. The 4" circles are nice but I don't think they are very efficient except for general bubbles. I really like these white ceramic stones because they take very little pressure to produce lots of bubbles. Anybody ever hook the stones up to the baskets like this?

Also you can see how murky the water is so I think it's time for the water change.

Here we are after a successful water change. We are at 1/4 strength nutes and as you can see they've been misted with the ThriveAlive solution. I'm also putting down some wet paper towels in an attempt to get the humidity up. I'll also putting domes over them to help out as well.

Skunk finally has a root coming out of the side! Finally. Next is the Blueberry, with a new fat root coming out the side. Better than those wimpy little roots at the bottom. The leader of the pack in the "root race" goes to Larry OG.

Today is Mon Apr 19, 2010 in the morning. Larry OG continues to lead but Kandy Kush in the upper left is coming on strong as well. Skunks fat root is getting longer. Blueberry and Purple Extreme are starting to bristle out lots of root around the sides. The original roots near the bottom aren't looking very good though and are turning a bit brown.

Here are my Monday morning measurements. By the way, I used Albertson's Drinking Water this time at $79/gal. Out of the jug it's 6.1ph and 0ppm. This res takes 4 gallons so I might just stick with this water.

And the 420 group shot. Everyone is looking good with the exception of Purple Extreme. Everything on her is yellowish so I'm not sure what's going on with her. All of the others are really going good. The yellowish leave on the bottom of the others is from my little first day heat disaster. Since they still have green on them I'll leave them be.

How about up close and personal. Larry OG, Kandy Kush, Skunk, Purple Extreme and Blueberry.

Okay, let's put this here to get back in order again.

Let's pick up with the saga of Purple Extreme (RIP). She gave it a good try but between humidity issues and some more temp issues she finally passed on.

Through the week I've been bumping up the nutes by 1/4 every two days and watching things. I was still having issues with heat, humidity and water temps along the way but things are proceeding well.

I was going to change the water last Friday but life got in the way and didn't get around to changing it until last Monday 4/26. Water temps are in the mid 70's and I'm getting concerned that my light proofing isn't working so well for the reservoirs. The roots are starting to get tinged brown. I was thinking it was staining from the nutes, but now I think it's environment. Time to start looking for solutions. :)

Pics as of the water change.

I set up a separate rez for Skunk and Purple Extreme with just Ph neutral water.

CIMG0021.jpgCIMG0022.jpg

A close up of Purple Extreme. Hanging in there for 4 days, no roots though so I'm concerned.
CIMG0023.jpg

Skunk just doesn't seem to be thriving. The big yellow leaf is remnants of the first night heat issue. I eventually trimmed it off.
CIMG0024.jpg

Here's Blueberry. I'm thinking recovery issues from the heat as well as environment?
CIMG0025.jpg

And then there's Larry. Look at her go man. She's nearly perfect.
CIMG0026.jpg

Lest we forget Kandy Kush? She's following right behind with one spotty leaf from the first night and all others are perfect and all nodes thriving! She's definitely more bushy and squat while Larry is long and lanky.

Ain't she purdy?
CIMG0027.jpg

Look at those roots. But again a bit brown. :(

Poor Purple Extreme.
CIMG0033.jpg

It's pretty amazing to me that all plants have been equal in their adventure. Some are thriving without a hitch while others struggle. Keeps me pondering.

So here's the latest. Needing a solution to the growing water temp issue I needed some inspiration. I ran across this post which I give credit https://www.rollitup.org/dwc-bubbleponics/313745-best-damn-reservoir-you-can.html

Also here's my quote on what I did:

Hey Boom,

Thought I'd post my Work In Progress. My water temps have been steady at 74-75 so I needed to get moving on a plan because the roots are starting to brown up. Here's the results.

I have exactly 18" of depth in my cabinet and my reservoir is 16". I went to Lowe's and purchased 1" rigid foam insulation. I cut the foam to fit around my reservoir and built a custom lid. What is nice about the lid is that it is now completely flat to let the net pots come closer to the edges spreading them out more. The reservoir on the bottom is what is inside the new cooler on the top so you get some perspective.

The night I built this got too late and I needed to get my ladies put to bed and get to sleep myself. Today, I plan on building another one, taping them both up with Aluminum tape and then spray paint the inside black.

The result? The first night in, I dropped in an 8 oz. frozen water bottle. Then next morning, temps were at 65.9 and the bottle was thawed. I pulled it out and haven't had to add another bottle in 4 days...temps are at 67.8. And that's with no tape yet and lots of leaks. :)

Structure is provided by toothpicks acting as dowels so the sides and bottom won't slip at the joints. I used skinny pieces for the underside of the lid to form a rim so the lid fits tightly. Again using toothpicks to hold it in place and the Aluminum tape keeping it together.

Comments welcome. I'll try and remember to post the finished deal.

peace
I'm still working on the final product more to come and updated pics of the girls. I added two more into the group so we'll have to do introductions later. Cherry AK-47 and another Purple Extreme. Gotta try one more time without the disasters. :)

peace

If you haven't stopped by https://www.rollitup.org/grow-room-design-setup/310497-new-cabinet-grow-9x4x18-complete.html then here's a pic of what we'll be growing in:

The bottom chamber is planned for mothers, vegetating and possibly clones if there is space. the top two chambers will be for flowering. 250MH and two 430HPS all three hopefully in a closed loop cool tubes.

I'm still working out how I want ventilation to work and have a few trick ideas to try out this weekend.

Electrical will be covered by 3 different circuits total 50amps. Not so much for power but redundancy. Power is being brought directly into the cabinet and each chamber will have a plug for all 3 circuits.

Don't you LOVE Google sketchup! I do. Nice thread scribin'.

Hey gamber, looks like we've all been busy , sorry to hear about the girls.
youre not the only one with environmental difficulties im currently running at 24 degrees centrigrade and 47 RH :( i think the air temp and humidity takes some practise to get just right. At least youre keeping a sharp eye on it and makeing changes where neccesary, i think its the only way to truly learn :bigjoint:

as far as your varying plant health i can tell you plants do differently in various environments some like more heat some like less, likewise for moisture and nutrients. if you get any more plants try and get ones similar to the ones doing well in your garden at the moment, just a suggestion i might be wrong but iv geeked out thoroughly on the topic of my favorite thing ... WEED :bigjoint:

Hey js,
You're right, it has been exciting over there. You've got a lot to do with the different strains and all. It would be too complicated for me to keep straight, I think.
You're doin a helluva job staying on top of it and, as usual, always come up with great ideas.
Things are much more laid back here for right now. We're just coasting along through flowering and should start some new seeds very soon.
Keep up the excellent work bro!!
