Also was told that the deer here taste better from eating corn while the northern deer eat mostly pinecones and stuff.
Deer don't eat pinecones - the only thing I know that does would be squirrels.
You guys ever shoot anything besides deer ?

I need to get me one of those scent sticks. Do you remember which kind you had? I would sure like to give it a try.
Sheesh, gun out of reach and a horny buck coming for you. I have to admit, the visual is hilarious. I always I mean always have a knife on me. If worse comes to worse, I have some sort of weapon. I use a pocket knife that I keep very sharp for cleaning the deer.

These ones....they tend to bring curious younger bucks and mature does that want to know whats going on. Killed a few over these, so have my friends. I'm hunting vicariously through my friends in real life and online...thanks!

Nice pics. I haven't hunted anything besides deer. I am going to hunt rabbit this year, I heard they taste mighty fine. If I would guess, I would say you are in Canada. Or Michigan. I would love to be able to hunt something else, but I only kill what I will eat and I don't know what all that other stuff tastes like.

I hunt Yukon moose, not Shiras so that rules out Michigan and the rest of the lower 48.
I am American living on our soil so that rules out Canada.
That is a Dall sheep I'm packing out so that leaves about one option.
As for the edibility of those animals - simply fantastic with the exception of the Kodiak Bear. Those guys are simply inedible no matter what you do to the meat & even cooking it on the stove will drive your dogs outside. The shit stinks !
BTW - if you want to hunt other critters, my advice is . . .Do it. Waiting around for an opportunity to hunt (what seems to you) exotic animals will seem stupid 25 years from now when you're too banged up to follow through. Just my .02.
Here's a couple more -

Hunting 2002 (33) [DVD (PAL)].jpg Hunting 2002 (37) [DVD (PAL)].jpg

First pic is an entire Mountain goat and camp in the "Pain Machine". 100 Lb plus pack out.
3rd pic is same hunt crossing a sandbar - "Oh my Toto, we're not alone !".
Last couple are Sitka Blacktail deer. - No huge racks, but an assload of primo meat.

Ah ok, so Alaska. Funny how I never think about that being in the U.S. I seem to always forget that for some reason.
How do you go about carrying those animals back to your place, camp or whatever? I had an issue just dragging a doe out of the woods over debris.

Edit: If I am too banged up at 54 I obviously didn't do something right in my life.

Understood.
I live far from my folks/siblings/kids/grandkids. But its a special treat to be able to give my grandsons (and anyone else with culinary appreciation) moose to eat.
Realizing I have given up a lot for this life style, but at the same time I have gained even more living in Gods country.
You should really consider a visit - won't be my fault if you can't stay away after that. ;-)
How about a couple more ?

BTW, the 5th pic is my first (solo) Dall sheep hunt. Note the cheezy spotting scope & who needs thinsulate when you have an army jacket ?
I was a lot tougher back then.

Pic #6 - look behind me, dude with a rifle. We had a little issue with a Brownie as we pulled this Elk out. The bear got only the gut pile & bones, and he let us know he didn't like the arrangement.

Speaking of bear - this dude was walking my friends dog when it happened.

Kodiak man bitten by bear
by Nicole Klauss
A Kodiak man who was bitten on his foot by a bear survived the incident by playing dead.

The man was walking a friend's dog in the area between Swampy Acres and Lake Catherine on Tuesday afternoon when he stumbled upon a sow and two cubs 20 feet ahead of him.

The man’s identity could not be confirmed by press time.

"It sounded like initially the bear started going the other direction, but the dog decided it wanted to sniff the cubs, and the mama bear didn't think that was something that she wanted to happen," said Larry Van Daele, regional wildlife supervisor for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

When the dog ran back to the man, the bear ran after the dog. As soon as the man saw the bear, he rolled up in a ball and played dead.

"It was the right thing to do," Van Daele said.

The bear reportedly grabbed the man's foot and pulled him a little bit, then checked on her cubs. When she came back to the man, she sniffed his head, bit his foot and ran off. The dog was on scene and barking the whole time, Van Daele said.

Van Daele said this was a worst-case scenario because the bears were likely unaware there were people around.

"It was a surprise because the wind was blowing so neither knew the other was there," he said. "From the description I heard, the bear had started to go the other way and would have gone off."

Van Daele said the bear has not been marked for death because it was an accidental encounter.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game discussed the incident with the Alaska State Troopers, Kodiak Police Department and the Coast Guard Military Police to determine whether or not the bear was dangerous.

"We all feel this was a surprise encounter and the bear acted defensively," Van Daele said. "If she would have charged him aggressively and if it had been a more severe mauling, then we would consider it one that crossed the line. All things considered it sounds like she did the right thing and he did the right thing, and they lived to tell about it."

Signs have been posted around the area warning people of the attack. Van Daele said the bear and her cubs should be heading to their den for winter soon, but there is still a chance she could be around the area.

"Fortunately, no one was hurt severely," he said.

So what did you have for dinner? I ate moose & crab I caught/killed/processed/packaged/prepared myself.
I didn't wander through Publix and pick up an antibiotic infused piece of meat all wrapped nice in plastic.
Thank you very much but I refuse to eat that shit !

At least I take responsibility for the majority of the protein I consume - you?
Peace

It's funny how people have forgotten in just a few short hundred years that the Forest was the supermarket.

Not even that long... It's called living off the land, Been done since the start of time.. If people had to survive off the land these days. 90% would be dead in 6mths if they lasted that long.

Went out to the woods today to build a ground blind close to a trail where I know that deer cross. I also set up my trail camera close to where my blind is set up facing the trail. Hopefully I'll get some good pictures over the next 4 days.
This tree to the right with all the yellow leaves on it, I cut that down from further in the woods and placed it beside my blind to make it blend a little better. I Built this whole thing out of tree branches that were laying around the woods and then attached some camo netting.
photo(28).jpg
This is the front side of the blind that is facing directly at where the deer trail is. The trail is probably around 20 yards or so from the front of this blind. I also cleared out quite a bit of smaller trees and such for some nice shooting paths.
photo(27).jpg
This is the inside of the blind. At some point I'll build a roof. Has some pretty nice sitting area.
photo(29).jpg
I would say that the blind is probably around 5 feet off the ground to the top of the blind. There is also like 2 feet of shooting space in between the top of the blind and the netting.

Big difference between killing something and eating it and killing something to mount on a wall or have it stuffed...I want to learn to hunt and process deer/turkey to feed me and the dogs...I have no respect for the assholes who kill lions or tigers and have them stuffed , or pay 100 k to shoot a rhino from a chopper to cut his horn off...
