First time grower. Harvest time opinions

Starting simple with training is easy. The main goals in training a plant are to control growth, and maximize canopy. Cannabis plants are very resilient and can take a good bit of abuse if you give them good conditions to live in and recover afterward.

If you have 3 seedlings starting you could do different training on each to see what happens. I like to use a combination of techniques to shape plants when I train them. I will usually use LST, and tie branches down to the edge of my pots to keep them where I want them to grow. This allows us to build a strong set of lower branches which will help support our buds on top when they start. LST is also a good way to spread the plant out horizontally to control the level of the canopy which allows you to keep the light closer and have more buds sites getting the light. As you spread the plant out more side branches will get light and reach up to become good bud sites.

I also use topping to create more bud sites and control size/growth. When you top a plant, or a branch it will typically grow 2 new branches or tops from the previous node. So you can take a seedling and top it and it will have 2 tops after that point. When you top it, the other side branches will also usually push out more since you stopped the vertical growth. Once it recovers and the tops grow up a couple more nodes, you can top those, and then you have 4 main tops, and your side branches might be almost equal to your main tops. Do this one more time and you have 8 main tops, and 4-8 side branch tops as well that you can top and split if you want, or just let them grow depending on your space and light penetration. All through this is when I would use the LST to control the direction and height of the side branch growth, and even the main tops if necessary. My whole goal is to have an EVEN canopy with many bud sites.

Hope that helps some.
Good stuff, Thundercat. WE all learn an develop our own methods that seem to work. Be a sponge for information, learn from mistakes, and get a little better next time. And don't be afraid to experiment a bit. My first couple of grows a i did the complete manifold- top at 5th node and cut out all lower nodes. I've since found that breaking apical dominance at node 5, leaving nodes 3&4, followed by the simple bend her over at 45%+ angle has worked really well. you can easily top as many times as you want to get the # of colas you want (I usually do 12 indoor and as many as 24 outdoor- I just got 23 oz of huge Sour D buds on 1 5' plant with this method!), and those lower branches below the manifold almost always become awesome colas; nurture, don't cut those lower branches is my tip. Thanks for the ideas, TCat and all Rollitup contributors!

Thanks.

ive noticed my fear of training methods. I’m afraid to damage it to where it hermies, or is un growable. I have heard people say to use pipe cleaners and tooth picks as a tie down for a lst training.
I lst'd for the first time on this plant. I topped and tied down the branches. I was setting around in my office at work thinking about the best way to do it when my eyes noticed those black clips that clamp larger stacks of papers together. I clamped a few of those to the edge of the pot, and used long wire ties I got at dollar general. Wha la, worked like a champ. Just FYI if you were looking for an idea for a future grow. One pic is right after I did it, and the other was last Sunday.

You need to lower your light a bit. It’s stretching very far. Find your “sweet spot” and don’t burn it.
I try not to exceed 75degrees on my canopy but that’s just me.
After your third to fifth node, top it.
ou also going to want to run a fan to strengthen the stems since they’re fucked rn. Sorry! But hey! You can turn this around without a doubt. We will help you. RIU is the best.

I’ve lowered light a little on my gorilla glue one. I’m gonna just let his plant keep going till he gets back. Also means I did the plant that’s in flowering wrong I thought having the fan blow on it would make it sway too much but never thought about it in terms of making stem bigger.

Oh no don’t bend the stems of those babies. They’re fragile right now. How are they looking
Wasn’t necessarily “bending” it was big enough that I was just trying to kinda form a canopy with it and freak accident slipped off the chair I was standing on and snap went stem. Oh well I guess I’ll see if I can make top part survive as a clone i guess. Doubtful but worth a try. Was not my gorilla glue plant tho.

The lankiness is from lack of light.

Start thinking about getting better lighting .
Look at Quantums, CMH , cob rigs.
If you are really serious about growing your own meds , the lighting is the core of your grow. That plant could have been so much more .... it’s a learning thing. But congrats on finishing it tho.
I should have learned to grow with used, cheap, inexpensive equipment first before buying any high end lighting. I killed my first 2 Grow’s with too much light (and over watered, and too many Nutes). All I’m saying is I should have learned to drive before wrecking a new car.

Exactly what I’m doing in my opinion. I’ve got multiple seeds of stuff I wanna grow great so I’m using unknown seeds to practice training methods while my really good light is used for the flowering period of 1 plant atm.

Dang man I’m sorry to hear that! Always try. Keep pushing to get better. Got any pics to show?

It’s a total rube and rookie mistake to harvest early. Be strong. Be patient. Get a digital microscope and look for the interior of calyxes to be 20-50% amber. Sugar leaves are misleading indicators!
Enjoy your harvest
