Oh yeah. In response to the thread topic. . . I think people should strive to be HEALTHY. Not to the level of being a fitness Freak, because that's gotta be unhealthy for some aspect of our life, but HEALTHY. Part of the health that people should aim for is mental health. If someone is overweight, they are generally not going to be in the most healthy state they could be mentally. They have internal struggles about their image that they have brought on themselves. Let's face it, even really fit, attractive people still have body image issues. It's part of life. What these fit individuals DON'T do however, is compound these issues by being overweight.
Being overweight causes burdens in peoples lives both mentally and physically. It puts extra strain on joints and the cardiovascular system, and it's really such an easy thing to fix and prevent. Unless you are physically handicapped, being overweight always boils down to the same thing. Laziness. Too lazy to control eating habits. Too lazy to go for a walk after that Super Sized meal from McDonald's. Too lazy to do some simple exercises with some 2 or 5 pound weights when you're sitting there watching t.v. for hours at a time. Too lazy to stand in your own living room while watching t.v. and do some aerobic exercise.
It's laziness and that's why I stop sympathizing after a while and start thinking to myself, "what the fuck. go for a walk. put down the candy bar, and go for a fucking walk".
I'd also have to look in to it further, but I'd say that being overweight is most certainly up there with adding strain to the healthcare system. Behind smoking but probably not by a longshot. Who knows though.....maybe it's in front. Get in shape people. There's no reason not to.
