If I don't use Protekt my plants get deficiencies. I use 1/4 ml gallon which raises my ph to 6.3. It goes in at 5.7 without adjustment. This is in Sunshine4.

That's my personal experience. I can't explain the science behind it, but I know the higher ph plants look and grow much better.

I water one gallon of water for three gallons of soil. Some plants get watered every other day and some get it everyday.

Some drink that in one day and the rest in two by the time they get to flower. I grow large plants in 3 gallon containers. There really isn't close to 20% runoff when I do this. I push it as far as plants getting rootbound, but that's what makes bigger flowers IMO. I do this in both "dirt" and coco.

Absolutely. With RO water, I use 4 parts foliage pro, 1 part protekt. I got to that 4:1 ratio by adding FP to a gallon of water, then measuring the amount of protekt needed to put my pH in the low 6's. Now that I know what works, I add protekt first, then FP. I'd recommend you do some 'tests' on a small scale to see what ratio works for you. Maybe drops of plant food into 8 ounces of your water?
BOOM. got it. My clones already love the FP. new growth like crazy. The 4:1 FP and protekt mix was pretty much spot on. My only question now would be are they getting enough of the protekt at such a lower dose? I'm guessing they are because you guys aren't having issues. Thanks again HB. Much appreciated.

Dynagrow makes a great product. I like using their protekt for silicon in conjunction with my gh.

Natures Nectar makes a great line as well. I like their phosphorous as a boost in bloom.

Flush to rid medium of salts.

I think I posted earlier in this thread about the same thing. Not looking to start fights or anything, but...

If DG foliage pro has the best NPK ratio, why do you have to use so much pro-tekt (potassium silicate) to fix the pH? It could be a coincidence, but had they added slightly more potassium, you probably wouldn't need the pro-tekt. Was this designed in on purpose to get people to buy a second bottle?

I'm convinced that silicates are a fad, and that it's the potassium in silicate products that make all the observable difference. Would you not get the exact same results adding potassium hydroxide (KOH) instead of potassium silicate?

Some would argue that the pH doesn't need to be adjusted when growing in promix/dirt/soil and if you're growing in hydro, one would use pH up anyways. All the base nutes I have in my possession right now are acidic and when used in hydro, pH up is needed. So I can either use Protekt or pH up to balance that pH.

In regards to silicas being a fad, it may be one of the only products out there that's not a fad.

one thing I am convinced of about pro-tekt is that if excessive levels are run in hydro it will facilitate slime blooms. This opinion is based off my experience and some others here @ riu.

when I ran it @ 2-4 ml/gallon I experienced the worst slime I've ever seen. there were other contributing factors as well but I dropped the level to around 1ml/gallon and the problems went away.

I promise you that protekt isn't causing 'slime blooms' for anyone. Whoever is experiencing those blooms needs to buy a bottle of bleach and learn to clean their equipment properly. No offense, that's just hydro 101 stuff.

Zone by Dutch Masters works wonders too and is cheap. No slime @ 1ml/gal !! at 75 degrees !!

HB You stated that in hydro you use FP during veg. What do you like to use during flower? Also any additives? Thanks for sharing your hard earned info with me.

I use protekt in flower with a 50/50 split of grow and bloom. Combinations of bloom and foliage pro are worth a try as well I think.

I run bleach in my rez as a sterilizing agent...works great. way better than h202

no offense intended or taken but after close to ten years in hydro, I understand about cleanliness, and it wasn't until I started experimenting with higher levels of protekt that I ever witnessed slime like this. I mean after only three days i'd have to change water again...even with bleach added.

What levels of protekt do you run in hydro HB?

It is not Silica causing slime it is organic matter and sugars exposed to light. The way I avoid it is with Dutch Masters Zone. It a sterilizing agent, keeps everything clean and roots happy. I stopped using any organics in flower as well.

I run an average of about 3mls/gal.

my rezs get zero light. They are in a different room...and are well aerated.

Imo. bleach is the most economical and effective sterilizing agent available. I Never used dmzone but I used 30% h202 by the gallon for a while. cal hypo is waaaay more effective as a sterilizer ime

a two pound bottle of pool shock will last for years and years. I mix the cal hypo up to clean all my equiptment as well as run in rez. when needed.
