Choosing a rosin press

Is this filled out correctly? Would I need 5 tons for 4 two inch diameter bags? I wonder because the bags wouldnt squish but I never went above 3 tons.

So I put 4 five gram bags at once but they didnt seem like they were squishing much at 1 ton or even 2 tons so I went to 3 tons and seems like it barely squished any out. Any advice?

I thought you increase pressure with surface area but never use more than 3 tons ever… Im confused.
You want the smallest surface area possible to get the most out of the press. That’s one of the reasons pressing via bottle-tech works so well. Think about the units for PSI (pressure) for a moment.

Pound-force per square inch -> (lbf/in^2). So if the max force for the press remains static independent of area (it does), the pressure (PSI) will increase as the denominator (area) decreases and vice-versa.

Press only one bag at a time, not four, to get the most out of the force you’re applying because less bag to plate surface area means more pressure. The same goes for the opposite: the more you increase the bag to plate surface area, the more you decrease the pressure being applied to the bud inside the bags.

For reference, here’s a picture of my 2.5 ton manual twist press with 5 grams of bud that’s had a 4 month cure being pressed in bottle-tech.

Hope this helps.

I was trying to make use of the larger plates, isnt that the point? I just figured it would yield the same but be quicker to make a larger amount. It seemed that way when I tried but didnt work this time. Just curious, I dont know why else get 7x5” plates.

You can totally make use of a larger surface area, but you’ll need much more force to get adequate pressure for a similar yield. The reason being is that the area is squared and the force isn’t for the units of PSI.

I’d say shoot for 600-1000 PSI for flower (according to a quick Google). So 800 PSI sounds like a safe place to start.

For 4 bags, each with 2 inch diameter, the area for each is 3.14 in^2. So for 4 of them, that’s a total area of 12.57 in^2. For an 800 PSI squish, it will require:

800 (lbf/in^2) = x/12.57 (lbf/in^2)
10,056 (lbf) = x
1 ton = 2000 lbf
10,056 / 2000 = 5.03 ton

For that bag to plate area, I’d start with a 5 ton squish and go from there.

Theres everything from this run. I guess I had to do it one at a time till I find out why I couldnt do 4 at once. Lost like 20gs.
Thanks for fucking up, so I don't have to. You mentioned looking for some good beans to squish... I'll be hunting a pack of these after I finish building my rig. I should probably start on that.

Yea see, I stopped at 3 thinking I could risk blow out or damage press.

I have bad memory so I cannot recall if I also saw it lose pressure but it surely did when I put 3 pucks back in to re squish. Any idea why? I returned to normal when putting one puck or a fresh bag in.

But yea, it seemed like it only got half of it to squish a little and the rest barely yielded. Also didnt look squished but If I am correct it messes it up once you already squish it like I did.

Could any of it have to do with last time using 4 eighth bags vs this time being 4 five gram bags? Nice yield by the way for 4 month old weed. I never got more than .5 per eighth or a tad bit more.

Gonna throw this question here, why is my weed hitting target rh cure/rosin zone but having flex and most stems snap? Some buds are mush prone still. 4-5 days dry herb shelf 60f/60rh.

My only answer is it needs time to further dry and sweat but something dont seem right.

And why does nugsmasher site say 120micron for 64+ rh material fresh. You cannot press wet weed or above 64rh can you? Some yall said no and so does press club and other sites.

I guess I have more weed to press already, a small amount but in next few days should have 3oz to press or so.

Gonna try same method just put 5gs to get a concievable yield and junk the strains. Heres my collection I am hunting through I just bought.

That alien gorilla sounds promising. I did purple punch outdoors this year. I don't think that one is a squish candidate
The high mars and frozen black cherry are 35% thc and pics show frosty. Got 5 pack of each hoping those were winners.

Although seeing pics of other growers grow it, the limited pics dont show very frosty. Could be grower or pheno related.

Maybe. Those thc numbers are bullshit, and they really don't mean much. I've had %17 thc stuff knock me for a loop. I grew some future #1, supposed to be %36. It sits in a jar like a poor kid wearing a rented suit to go to his step dads wedding because his mom died and "Steve" is getting remarried.

I just dont know what else I can do to virtually hunt through the site and look at pics and descriptions and research anything I can find online outside of the store about the strain.

There is a list of strains google brings up that is said to make rosin and so far its right about gg4 and chemdog derivative strains or just coincidence.

Not much to go by and cant get clones, maybe soon because the first stores are opening up but idk if I can just ask and recieve a clone that makes rosin.

Till then I have a crap show of a garden, a small one making this harder. Can only do so many strains at a time. Thats if I dont have canopy issues therefor.

I admire your medicine dedication. I know you won't stop until you find the one, and you will. Your effort is too dedicated not to. I have some chernobyl testers going right now, and there is a community grow planned for February. @BobBitchen supplied some slymer beans from his personal stock. Maybe hop on over there and try some chernobyl. Frost for days. I bet that would press like a jelly donut

Thanks for the kind words, it inspired me to keep going. Thats exactly the attitude and theme I try to display. I did reach a moment realizing I have much much more work to do but maybe I can get hooked up here.

I didnt plan on getting hooked up that way but idk what people do to if they want to keep some anonymity. Like PO box and crypto or paypal etc.

Also was waiting to see what they do with farmbill and seeds if they renew it to stay in favor of buying beans and shipping them. I am interested though, why work harder than smarter right.

Exactly. I got sick of buying crap seeds with piss poor potency. I spent around $350 on two orders. But they both came with a butt load of freebies. Good ones.
If any of these get me to the promised land I will scream it from the rooftops. You won't need to read a post. Everyone will hear it. One of the freebies I got was mocha berry from copa genetics. 1 male so far, he's in the bathroom. Smells like dank chocolate cookie skunk. I'll be saving some pollen, and a clone.

My indoor yields were garbage compared to my outdoor. I think outdoor heads are bigger. Just an observation from pressing, I've never grown the same strain indoor and outdoor at the same time to compare.

It's a crap shoot with what strain is going to press well, ime, frost doesn't always equal large returns. Bodhi is a great start though, great genetics at cheap prices. One of the first strains i pressed was Bodhi's Cocoon , not the most impressive looking sparkle wise, but it was one of the better yielders and tasted great.

I was reading on making dry sift and read strains good for collecting kief are indicas or hybrid because trichromes are smaller and pass through easier than sativas. Then they mentioned strains like wedding cake and all cookie ones. So maybe those ones would be better for squishing. Even grinding a ton and squish the keif will turn immediately to shatter afterwards in freezer for half hour.
