Blackbird - The Purge :cuss:

Well , gave those 2 Barney’s Ayahuasca Plants enough time to turn around - decided to shitcan them. They exhibit strange , ugly mutated growth .
Why spend anymore resources on them ?

I usually give a “ breeder “ 3 chances on their gear …. Their Tangerine dream was also a hot mess. Plants were originally under typical 18/6 Veg starts , then 12/12 flip. After that came the mutant growth / weird single and 3 leaf growth throughout. Stem rub produce nothing notable. Obviously this strain is not worked very well . 2 remaining seeds were germed but didn’t survive.

This part of the reason I took cuttings from the ETHOS white wedding plants. But not all is lost ……..

The Cherry Soda Twist ( my cross ) ( Black Cherry Soda x Cherry Do-Si-Do ) plant is thriving beautifully pulled from the QB96 TENT. …. You can see the heavier sativa swing in these girls … and is now under the Blackbird .

Your right in the sweet spot for a non CO2 enhanced grow. The gains taper off starting around 800 PPFD and flatten around 1000ppfd

I was using Photone but what i heard might be 5-8% off compared to actual meters. But if it is close than ok . I level out setting at around 775-800 umoles at 20-24” ( current canopy height )

Leaf stay pretty much lateral to rig. Plants tell me how much gas to press. Lol.

Blackbird - Future Mod idea

First , I am not doing this until this grow finishes
- as the idea for getting this light was to show a grow under it.….. As is. :bigjoint:

However …. I have been a user of UV to push flower and frost. In my QB96 rig I did that with a Sunblaster Nano T5HO lamp ( 2 ) mounted
24’ between the HLG 96’s. I designed it to fit between the light spread.

8EC41138-CFD1-4D19-873F-85023B9A5110.jpegD8EA37DE-A4B3-4CFB-B03D-333D173D0A56.jpeg

With the BLACKBIRD I found that I can easily add another SUNBLASTER T5HO within the rig’s plate. I find I can drill small holes in plate / heatsink for those simple quick release clips that would hold lamp. It would also allow easy removal .

What about the HLG 30 ?

SURE. I could have went that route - but I like the interchangeable lamps I can do with Sunblaster.

For example :

Adding the 6400 / 6500k lamps for more blue during Veg.
Adding the Super Veg lamps.
‘Adding the 10000k finisher lamp.
And of course the powerful Pure UV.

The power plug could easily be routed out of side vent and plugged up to a single timer. This flexibility is hard to resist.

Here is the Mock-up.

Again thank you @pop22 and HLG.

Let me know what you guys think.

I took the slow classes in science so I'm not sure how light particles work. Would the other spectrums you plan on running interfere with the light from the main light being delivered in the same way? Like, do the new light particles cause the original particles to bounce around and deflect at all? Retired engineer runs a bunch of side lighting and uses that 10K bulb in his setup, it makes for some nice buds.

I think it's great idea!

I do change outs with that QB96 rig.

I can leave QBs off / load 6400k lamps and start cups / clones. That is literally starting a grow from scratch with same rig .
As grow continues - I power up or do bulb swaps to help harden the early growth.
I have some early 4000k QB boards that I used before ( stored ) , they worked well.
I used to be running 3500k blended rigs like QB304 , etc.…. I don’t get into the egghead sciencey stuff. But look at bumping certain kelvin.

That’s why I like the Sunblaster - easy germ starts then I can do swap to Super Veg or Pure Par ( red/blue hue ) to get them started .
It’s like having multiple lamps within one main rig.

The Pure Par bulbs I think are discontinued ( red/blue hue ) - thank god I snagged 2.

I like tinkering and have made all of my original HLG rigs.

Batwing - Early Mod Lamp ( Original HLG 304 boards - 3 independent drivers )

Boards bought when HLG was known as Northern Grow Lights ( used sticker that came with boards )
This started like as a shit Mars Hydro light - I gutted it / added an HLG board / added side board wings ( QB304 ) aluminum short rails.
Early HLG boards were tested as pairs with Vf handwritten on each board to work together.
Saved internal fans / fan driver for air flow ( works really well ) added small simple 100watt drivers ( each board ). Mounted to rear edge.
Repainted that shit mars case to a hammered finish ( rustoleum ) came out clean as shit.

Actually my favorite build. :bigjoint:

Im not allowed to play with electrical stuff, bad things happen. My wife thinks it's funny as hell how many times I've electrocuted myself doing car repairs or work on stuff around the house. That sounds like a really cool build though and a great way to get to understand these lights better. I just went from a 3500 spectrum cob setup to a 4000K bar led setup so I'm interested to see how they compare. Thanks for sharing the idea.

I enjoy sharing my ideas - RIU used to have a great DIY thread ( haven’t checked lately ) .
As far as electrocution- reminds me of that ElctroBoom guy on YT.
LOL.

I used to just do mock-ups , tell the wife I need to go to the store ( had to bring something sweet tho ). And lay things out.
I used 8x11 white paper to simulate board placement - lol.

Note you can see the handwritten forward voltage numbers on boards.

The volume of photons negates the scatter. A good portion of what your plant receives is reflected light from walls, tent

New Blood - White Wedding Clones

Well , after some lazy days I managed to get the Hempy Buckets up. These clones started around Sept. 22.
They were actually transplant ready about 5 days ago but have been a little lazy. ( * shrugsbongsmilie )
So I actually have 3 of them - the last one will probably be a soil bag.

Pre-soak rooters in neutral spring water / Clonex ( gold liquid ) dilute.
45° cut below node point / stem scrape to expose more surface area
Dip cutting into rooting powder ( made it like a paste )

Daily mist of diluted Clonex gold.

RIG - QB 96s with Sunblaster lamps

Hempy Buckets - 3:1 perlite / vermiculite
Dynomyco / Rooting powder -
Nutes to be used : GH MAXIBLOOM / HYDROGUARD

Blackbird -

Ran into a slight PK issue ( my layered mix ) maybe starting to exhaust. So I began to supplement it with a good dose of 2-8-8 dry fertilizer watered in with seaweed at a more narrow 6.8 ph - as my buffering may be allowing more ph drift that I want. So from here on out I will narrow the PH to ensure uptake. So I will monitor . Ethos White Wedding is giving off a sweet / baked aroma. Whereas , Cherry Soda Twist is tropical fruit / spice.

Those plants have longer spear shaped flowers ( narrow leafed in pics ). The White Weddings are stacking but not as prominent as Cherry Soda.
The White Weddings are the ones starting to get a little deficient- hence the bump in nutes.

Blackbird is running along no issues … and may bump power up a little.

QB 96 w / Sunblaster ( Pure Par Veg ) Bulbs -

Warming up in the dugout - 3 White Wedding clones. I decided on the last clone to just hempy it.
3:1 perlite / vermiculite blend - pre rinsed ( hate the dust ) - and setup with 5.9 ph GH Maxigrow.
QB 96s are running at about half power with pure par bulbs adding supplemental red/blue.
That set of Agromax bulbs are discontinued which is a shame. However they also work great as a substitute over conventional 6500k flouro.
Sometimes that set of bulbs start a group of cups by itself ( QB set to off ).

Cycle is 20/4 to help get things going. The clones were slightly going into flower when I took them , and they have a tiny flower starting.
So , it will be a bit to reverse course them into Veg .

Humboldt Blue Muffin / BCS x NL
Next set of seeds getting dropped today for germination……
Humboldt Blue Muffin ( purple panty dropper x razzle berry ). This was gifted to me to run as a tester. So …. I plan to either take cuttings or self a lower branch for more seeds to play with. Only have the one :wall: but hopefully I can keep its line going for experimenting. Fingers crossed.

Black Cherry Soda x NL - another variation of the BCS strain I ran before ( BCS x Tangie ) - this time with NL.
So I am also testing this chuck for the first time also.

I did presoak with the rooters in a Clonex ( gold liquid ) in a 6.0 ph water dilute . I have a seedling warming pad ready if needed.

Blackbird - Black Sunday :bigjoint:

Been working on that PK issue with the ethos white wedding plants in back - narrowing the PH going in since I think the buffering is depleting.
I really am not gonna add garden lime and just adjust on the fly. I also bumped the pk with a switch to Maxigrow this week over Maxibloom.
It actually seemed to help. I clipped the necrosis at leaf tips to monitor any progression of issue and it seems to have halted.

They are still drinking well at every other day for watering - so dry back is still regular. I plan to run hydroguard in water for a root kick.
Ethos smells like sweet bread and Cherry twist like tropical candy. I prefer more Danky strains but it is what it is.

Blackbird is humming along just fine with temps around mid 80’s.

Their Tangerine dream was also a hot mess.
Agreed. I paid actual money for 3.. thinking they would be perfect. No tangerine. No dream, just paranoid smoke. But they threw in 3 purple peyote critical seeds and the one plant was the best! All my friends wanted more of that one. Big yield and you could smell it from the road. How many chances is Barney’s farm at now with you ?

I give “ breeders “ 3 times , on average before moving on. I lurk strains that are grown by multiple growers , that tells me if it’s worth it .
I give zero shits about IG drops or other “ hype strains “ , I’m thinking of sticking with more classic lines ( hopefully not too diluted by now ).

I like Durban Poison , GG4 , Romulan , Master Kush , Mendo ….. shit like that.
Cali Connection was the other on my avoid list. I don’t want to be a Karen about it , just give me something worth growing.
