What he said, and if you cant afford a ph meter from the shop which i would recommend you can get them pretty cheap from ebay or you could get a cheap chemical pool ph tester, ph is very important though so you must get a tester.

I just read an article that said that peat moss behaves a lot more like soil than hydro so the ph should be adjusted to meet soil ph requirements.

Hot soil means that the soil has a toxic level of nutrients in it not that the soil is to warm temperature wise, if you use to much fertilizer the plants will get nutrient burn which stunts growth and burns leaves.
