Yes you need a carbon filter to clean the smell from the air, and as far as venting to some where else goes it is usually a good idea but it depends on the wattage of your light the size of your room and the ambient temps.

Well there should be no heat at all as long as the wire is not over loaded, if a wire is warm to the touch it is a good sign that it is over loaded.

Yes it is worth it if heat is going to be a problem for you, and yes it requires a fan so does odor control, a centrifugal one though not some little bitch ass booster fan.
