Is it worth the extra money to buy a grow light with an air cooled tube? Does it require the purchase of a fan? Sorry I'm a noob, how do air cooled tubes work?

Yes it is worth it if heat is going to be a problem for you, and yes it requires a fan so does odor control, a centrifugal one though not some little bitch ass booster fan.

Im not even gonna put ducting on the other side of my cooltube, use it as my tent exhaust aswell in part with a passive exhaust and some small fans

You should be able to get the ducting at any home improvement store, as far as the centrifugal fan goes any hydro store but your best price would be online from ebay or google shopping. I also have my air cooled hood open ended and i use it as an exhaust but i pump my air threw a carbon filter so a centrifugal fan is a requirement although any time i am dealing with an HID i consider a centrifugal fan a requirement i consider booster fans to be a liability.

What about odor arent you going to need to clean your exhaust air?

I'd need a carbon filter for that? Doesn't the ducting need to vent out somewhere like off to another room maybe an attic? Thanks, I'm not really sure how it works yet.

Yes you need a carbon filter to clean the smell from the air, and as far as venting to some where else goes it is usually a good idea but it depends on the wattage of your light the size of your room and the ambient temps.
