Do any LED fixtures produce an HPS-like color?

Ok next question. What’s the colour temperature of 99% of HPS bulbs out there?
yer like the colour you instantly think of when you think hps, the colour the op described right at the start of this thread!!!!!!!................................:wall:

I’m just trying to narrow down his science

tbf hps is pretty reminiscent of evening sun in the desert southwest
And this is a very interesting point, I think.
I appreciate the discussion and the comments about the Sun and all.
I'm kinda getting old and I have been around growing weed (off and on) for many years....most of the time, without a clue auto what I was doing! I started out with fluorescent shop lights and then eventually graduated to HID. Back then, it was determined, that, for whatever reason, marijuana seemed to really like growing under the sick, orange/pink/yellow color of HPS bulbs best of all the available options at that time. I don't remember anyone making any spectral comparisons back then. It was just a fact from seeing the results of using HPS lights in comparison to anything else at the time (with the exception of metal halide, which plants also really liked).

Having used many different types of LEDs at this point, I decided to try the old way, again, just for a fun experiment. So I went up and dug through the attic until I found my old MH ballast, reflector and I bought a brand-new Sylvania Metalux MH bulb....single end, mogul base....extremely inefficient...and I also bought a SunLux HPS conversion bulb when the time came to switch to flower.

The plants love these HID bulbs -especially unshielded. They just do. I am trying to determine exactly why. I was thinking that the MH bulb was closer to sunlight at noon on a summer day and HPS was like a late summer afternoon kind of light. Maybe I'm completely off base, but, I was thinking that the reason the plants love these lights so much is because these spectrums signal the plants to respond accordingly in growth. Maybe the excessive amount of so-called "worthless yellow light" is actually part of the plants' overall daily requirement....? Certainly the IR component is major, as well.

With my LED grows, it was clear that the plants were getting more-than-ample light from the fixtures, but something different was happening. For one thing, under LEDs, many of the plants' stalks and stems turned red. Even amending with CalMag, they just seemed to be straining for some kind of missing component. I kind of figured the radiant heat coming off the bulb was a big part of it -that and the fact both light and heat were coming from the same source -that being from above and directed downward. Prior to that, I was just running a space heater in the room.

Hps growers are generally happier growers, I'm not sure why. ;)

Growing under hps is like spending the day at the beach.
Growing under blurple is like being probed on an alien spaceship.
Growing under white led is like being a deer staring at headlights.

Happy Growing! :weed:

I remember ages ago finding some studies about red stems been a sign of intense light.
Or at least light too intense that the plant couldn't fully utilise it, likely because the other factors involved were not being met (eg temps, root mass, nutrients).

It's an interesting discussion and I'm not sure we have all the answers just yet but I'm glad this thread hasn't gone to shit like some do.

What's your definition of "plants loving it"?

I feel some cultivars prefer hps as its what they been going under mainly for decades and regardless of intensity of lighting indoors is still always technically low light conditions think how much the sun actually throws out its just adaptation in alot of strains id say to hps lighting
