Fair enough, Canada gets some severe weather (guessing your not in Norway), not surprising you don't see many cyclists.
Yeah. I'm up in Edmonton. I'm not one of those people against bike lanes as such. But the placement and implementation of them leave a lot to be desired. It's even become divisive in the biking community itself as the City clears certain areas of snow in the winter and not so much others. It's nothing new here though as city planning has sucked balls for decades.

i'm sorry, i can't finish this conversation...you called rob roy in as an "expert"...that leaves me out of the conversation, as i cannot take his opinions on anything seriously, and the fact that you enlisted his aid makes it that much harder for me to take you seriously...
No, you normally don't win many debates do you? I didn't call Rob an expert at all now did I? Nope. You do struggle to engage in conversation people with differing viewpoints than yours. You must be very set in your ways and id wager had a very conservative upbringing. Did your education system have class debates? Very important i think for children.
I didn't enlist his aid i was just curious on his thoughts on when we first lost Freedom. He is always banging on about freedom so would of given the topic much more thought than I. Perhaps we lost it as soon as two or more people came together and ones became subservient to the other. Perhaps before we could even properly communicate.

And yep it seems we all agree that all Governments take away rights.

I'm not a huge fan of them either but its better than them being on the road. They are allowed two side by side here so are very annoying on the road- hence bike lanes make some sense.
With E Bikes and E Scooters becoming so popular and as cities condense and have more and more traffic issues i think we will have a huge rise in personal E bikes/scooters/carts. Bike lanes do supply a traffic system for them and perhaps will get larger and larger.

ommfg i would love facebook to faceplant...all the harm it has done, all the hate it has spread, even the innocent bullshit is still banal and irritating...

I share the sentiment. It would be lovely if the biggest unregulated intelligence-gathering engine in the world today succumbed to the same market forces that made it the 8000-ton gorilla rampaging through downtown Everywhere.

Owning social media is like a moth to a flame for rich narcists, the attention attracts them. I've noticed FB is pretty tame and twitter is loaded with Russian bots endlessly repeating the same themes as maga republicans. Something needs to be done about social media, nobody knows what, but it is a dangerous animal in any society, or can be turned into one by some users and even the owners. Unless moderated or administered any social media platform or forum will go downhill fast, as anti-social elements, clown's kids and the mentally ill take it over. Kinda like how the GOP got subverted into a home for idiots, all the good people left and the crazy just attracted the crazier.

It’s the 21st-century equivalent of owning a metropolitan newspaper. Hearst famously made and broke top-flight political careers, and I vaguely remember that he was a kingpin of restrictive weed policy that dogs us a century later.

i am apparently a fucking visionary...i said every fucking bit of this was going to happen within days of social media getting started...
"You're going to give the American public a forum they can post on anonymously? that's going to be an ugly experience, at least 25-30% of the American people are horrible fucking racist hateful pieces of shit." i said in 2004 when facebook became facebook.
and i've been proven right ever since.
there NEEDS to be accountability on the internet...the things you say there are the same as the things you say in public to an audience, and the same consequences should apply...
take away the anonymity, if you post on any social media platform, EVERYONE KNOWS that was YOU saying that shit, no more fucking closet racist rants, no more getting to be an online karen and then go about your life like it didn't happen.

At the same time, the feature you describe (anonymity enabling frankness) allows me to get a good sample of a usually-concealed and (because?) revealing thought process. There is value in knowing the unvarnished opinions of the animals that surround me.

He also started a war to boost circulation...

is that value enough to offset the risk of their organizing? to do something like....oh, say...take over the legitimate government of the US?
i know that is an outlandish example, which could never happen in the real world, but i wanted to use an over the top example to draw attention to the fact that they HAVE TRIED TO ORGANIZE TO OVERTHROW THE LEGITIMATE GOVERNMENT OF THE US...

Social media is more dangerous from a national perspective, it allows people to not only spread disinformation, but to form communities and online tribes that offer social and emotional support. It often overwhelms other social influences in their lives, and they can become radicalized. The easy way in is to ride on top of existing social division and bigotry, then enrage to engage, after that they are putty in your hands when ya feed them the spin and propaganda narrative. When you are trying to talk sense to many people, you are not just up against an individual, but you are also up against their tribe, social support network and disinformation sources, their culture.

Yes. They’d organize anyway, and this way there is a sight glass into the tank, allowing us some real-time awareness like the thing in all-caps.

They’re not done organizing and implementing. Social media let us see enough it going on to move us to counter their doings.

Slight difference of opinion. I would suggest using social media more for intel. The counterpropaganda activity is perhaps better done in a distinct medium. I see wisdom in posting the counterarguments for those who look, but not in getting so invested on/in the same platform as to consider it the main battlefield. The serious counterinsurgency might be more efficiently aimed at less-volatile media, such as letters to the editor or blogs. It’s basic Sun-tzu: don’t give choice of time andor place to the enemy.
