The Russians and other domestic players have made social media a battlespace unfortunately. Anywhere people can communicate they also share hatred and bad ideas, things that might be suppressed in other parts of their lives perhaps. Social media can gather these people for profit, so can other media like TV and print by the nature of their content, spin and narrative. The difference with social media is the two-way nature of the interaction and the ability to link up with likeminded individuals and everybody starts amplifying themes to extreme points. It allows them to organize for real world action too, swarming school board meetings with lunatics traveling for hours to attend and disrupt, etc. It allows a demigod to have a vast following and tribe without the traditional hierarchical social structure and to communicate with them directly. They could do this with radio before and in many places, this was a state monopoly and the newspapers soon followed. Now you can selectively pick out the racists and assholes in a country using algorithms and target them to put in your information silo. Radio and TV are regulated for a good reason, to prevent a race to the bottom driven by profit, stupidity and hate. Times change and we are going through ones now, the changes in society wrought as a result of technology are becoming manifest across multiple countries and generations, as they always have.

The social media town square needs to be defended by the military or NSA and policed by the FBI and FCC, just like a physical space would be. False advertising used to be illegal for instance and the federal government should be empowered to deal with forgien bots, propagandists and malicious software. Social media companies over a certain size in terms of users, need to be regulated and their algorithms examined. Drama sells and no holds barred social media like a blood sport would be profitable, so would live gladiator death matches live from Africa or Asia. It depends on where you want your society to go, I guess, where you want to lead future generations, up or down, the ride down is fast and profitable.

As I recall that's why people left the republican party when the racists took over. He vastly overpaid according to many in the business and won't make a buck alienating minority users, who won't want to be insulted whenever they use Twitter. Elon just decapitated management there, so dealing with this might take some time, freedom of speech often comes with a price and Elon will pay a big one if he lets hate to run wild on Twitter. I won't be using it at all, and neither will many others, users are ad revenue and that pays the bills, with what Elon paid for Twitter he's gonna need a lot of revenue and as many eyeballs as he can get.

The FCC will need to regulate social media over a certain size and require more curation, like a newspaper, editors and bullshit detectors. Make then create some fucking jobs for liberals and educated sane people in general. Don't fine Tucker when he bullshits, help him spread his message by making him repeat it under oath on CSPAN! We are only after the truth and that can be repeated under oath, lies not so much, he can even be required to show his sworn testimony under oath.
