As images of Russian troops storming into Ukraine flashed on screens around the world, several senior Chinese foreign policy experts sent a flurry of text messages to friends and colleagues in the US: “Is this fake news?”

In a briefing with reporters in Beijing hours later, Hua Chunying, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, repeated Russian defence ministry statements that Ukrainian cities would not be targeted and questioned whether the Russian invasion should be called “an invasion”.

I doubt that. The fact that Scholz yanked the cert from the pipeline suggests otherwise to me.

Meaning they won’t use a pipeline that wasn’t in use yet. Replace “probably” in ANC‘s post with definitely and you have an undeniable fact. One of the (poor) reasons for Germany to oppose the SWIFT ban is so they can still pay for gas easily. Not just Germany:

“In the hours after the invasion of Ukraine, there were calls for Europe to punish Russia by ending energy purchases. But the immediate response of European energy companies was to buy more natural gas, much of it transported through Ukraine’s pipeline network.

For a second day, utilities are ordering more fuel under long-term contracts with Gazprom PJSC because the deals are priced in a way that Russian imports became cheaper than spot gas traded at European hubs.”

The media pushing the whole gas situation is just distracting. It’s not as relevant as some pretend it is. The world will continue to buy oil from Russia as well. Short of nuclear war, the only likely way the energy export will stop flowing is if the supply lines are damaged physically.

It's not sensational enough when the headline says "oil and gas imports are same as before". Cancelling Nord Stream 2 has implications for the future but people are talking as if there were an immediate effect.
