Dude,
I'm glad there haven't been any accidents, I'm sure you have told your kids all about gun safety.
What you said was "don't lock your guns up!
That's exactly not what the NRA and other gun safety guidelines say. Safety is about prevention, not preaching. The best way to prevent a kid from accessing a gun, showing off and killing or maiming somebody (happens 1300 times a year) is to make so they NEVER can get to that gun. What you are saying is you don't follow that guideline.
I'll let gun owners who have thought this through tell you how they meet that guideline and can still access the weapon quickly at need.
I don't own a gun because I've been convinced by statistics that a owning a gun makes a person less safe. My dad owned a few guns and I handled his revolver, fired it and felt nothing. Nope, the gun was loud, smelly and the rattlesnake we killed didn't deserve to die. There were at least two instances where my dad pointed a loaded gun at family. Once when drunk and once when angry. I believe that is much more common than you or anybody who owns guns admit. So, no. I don't think guns make people more safe and my personal experience is in line with that belief.
That said, I'll let you gun owners try to figure it out. But don't expect me to cut anybody any slack.
