Canada has had 'hate crimes' on the books for a while.
The sky did not fall and the sun still came up.
They seem to be used to add time to sentences for assault, etc. I doubt it is perfect as nothing on this planet seems to be.
Personally, I think it is helpful to sanction certain behaviour. I would definitely not want to live where anyone felt they had the impunity to assault people whose outward appearances they did not like.
I prefer law and order not a police state.
I prefer 'live and let live' not control and bullying.
