There are a few issues with it. I really need to run a water chiller. Short of that I need a way to secure an ice pack in there to change out regularly. With my current lid I'm a lot more limited on number of plants. The store won't sell a replacement lid so you got to buy a whole tote to reconfigure. The power head I got is bigger than expected. It ends up taking up the space for one plant. If I were to purchase again I'd get the kind with an air tube. It will put extra air into the water plus the impeller is enclosed making it easier to keep roots from tangling in it. I've got to figure out how to do so soon.

I have been thinking about your situation, and given your taste for less noise (smaller air pump) and need for more air and cooler res temps. My suggestion would be doing like you were thinking initially and make it a recirculate system. Instead of using another tub for your res get an insulated cooler (cheapie), the gravity feed back to the res will help cool your water and give it much needed air (gravity flow is more efficient for diffusing air than a pump). Insulation and isolation helps with higher temps in the summer too. To top it off your access to the root tub and res will be alleviated. You can also get a same size tub and a can of spray foam to insulate the root zone, just tape seal around the lips and cut in the squirt points so the foam will expand where you want it.

By all means pull that ho out and wash them roots man, she will be glad. Once they have turned like that they are already dead and rotting, give em a good wash with med pressure and don't be sad when much of that mass is gone, she has to get a clean root zone. Literally remove that hydroton wash the tap root then bathe whats left with a h202. Make sure to put clean hydroton back in too. Keep changing the res especially if your getting the rotten root diarrhea in there. Being persistent is the only way mango! That root rot can be a bitch! I saw fresh clean growth at the top of that pick so she is trying to hang in there.

I took the plant out and tried washing the roots in the sink. They are not slimy at all, the stuff flaked out. I'm still pretty sure that it is coco from the coco pots that had gotten lose in the system. The roots I managed to get washed off are still white.

When I get to build a new cab I have a lot more to keep in mind this time. Right now I don't really have a way of adding in such things easily. Fortunately though it's coming on winter and temps will begin getting lower. The air pump uses more power than either my fountain pump or my power head so there's an advantage on top of the noise issue.

When I get to build a new cab or get a tent I'll be looking into doing a better setup for my situation. I'm looking at the modified nft, most often labeled as low pressure aeroponics or just aeroponics. I'd pump water up from the reservoir and then waterfall back from the plant container. This way the shelving wouldn't have to hold a lot of water weight at one time. It would be interesting to try running it as an aquaponics setup in this fashion just for fun, couldn't do that with a dwc as the fish would eat your roots.

An indoor worm or soldier fly composting bin would break down all your plant leftovers so nothing in your trash for cops to find. Then the excess bugs can be fed to the fish and the compost can be used on outdoor or potted plants.

Pipe dream until I get the money to set up and more space to do so.

You got a foamy head in there? It looked like there was a big 'ol booger of slime about half way up the cage! I don't want to say it's a better pic but it is. So it's just coir all tangled up?

I like your idea of self consuming/sustaining system, maybe you could put under water nets to protect the roots. Bud lilies lol
I'm familiar with nft and modified nft. I have experimented a lot over the years.

Ok, now for my little light write up

First you need these, or something like it
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100356842/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=lamp+holder&storeId=10051#.UKwE44bIuSo

It should have one brass and one silver screw like this
4288254.jpg

Porcelain is preferred over plastic, the front screws would be better than the back screws. See what you find, I used the one I linked to.

You will want to take wire and link silver to silver and another wire to link brass to brass. To do this take your first socket and your wire. Strip the end and wrap it around the screw and tighten it down. Unwind the amount of wire you will need between sockets plus a little slack. Cut and strip the wire and wrap it around the screw and tighten it. If your socket has two of each color you take the next length and put it under the second screw. If it only has one of each then you will need to twist the ends of two cords together before wrapping it around the screw and tightening it. On the last socket just don't put any wires coming out.

You can take a two prong extension cord and cut to the length you need. (Make sure it is unplugged) Cut back the insulation and there will be two cords inside. One should have a rib or ribs on it, this should be your neutral. Cut back some insulation on this cord and connect it with the silver screw on one of your end light sockets. The other one should be your hot and connects to the copper side.

I don't use a switch because it is on a timer and didn't see a point in having a switch.

Yeah it just often gets called aero on here. I'm not about to put on any airs and call it such. I try to properly label things. It's why it gets to me when people tell me they bought hydro, using the term to claim that it's top shelf rather than grown hydroponically.

Yeah I ended up getting foam after putting in the aquashield + myco brew. Just realized I forgot to add the zho fungi, and I forgot to go look at the local store for worm castings to start a full brew. Drats. Have to do that tomorrow.

I think it is coco. It's not slimy at all and just flakes out when washed and looks white under it. I ran it under the faucet but that mess is awfully matted together at this point.

From what I was looking at you could probably chop up the fan leaves and feed them to the fish straight as goldfish will eat romaine lettuce and such apparently.

I hate when numbers get in the way of visions or plans. A 2'x2' and 6' tall would still wouldn't give me much room. Would have about 4'4" between the bottom and the light. If plant container is a foot, we're down to 3 ft. Need space between the light and the plant canopy. Sounds like tiny plants for the work of building it. Not sure how people set up 2'x2' grow tents that they sell.

Idk about tents, but I've a box that's 16"x16"x37"(inside)I have the lights as high as I can, and fans exhaust directly out n up. Passive intake below the plants draws the fresh air over them and out the top. Really helps with temps, since its a straight line shot, as opposed to moving around the cab and trying to vent out a side.. But that only gives me about 29" of usable height, and then the pot height takes space, but training them in there is easy and very effective.

I had checked my rez ec level after pouring in the tea. Was extremely high so I haven't put in notes. I put a spotlight on them and turned off the led. Holy shit they're light green and tops are yellow. Lesson learned, really should check them under regular light more often.

Not sure what happened to my clones. They're all dried up. Fogger is still running, still had water in it.

Oh yeah, Voidling, that bean from the BB1 has shown girl parts to me! I'll get you a cut when it's ready for cutting..

The tops. They're laid over done for. Bottom side still looks fine. Hadn't misted them the whole time and did fine until yesterday. At least I have one or two in water with a real root or two. Plus puts a priority on setting up the other tub

Way to keep your head up man! Best way to see it, is as an opportunity.. ;)Wish I could have dropped by and hung out yesterday. (I need to know these things in advance!) :)

Hell I didn't know until right before texting you.

Think I'm going to try getting the lid cut tonight and get it set up

Had a nightmare of getting busted with a largish basement grow. Horrible.

Day 1 of cuts in my sprayer tub.

One plant looked like it survived out of the fogger tub. I wish I had another timer so I could modify and try again. Anyway I put it in a cup with coco
