they do look better, even skywalker 1!! sucks about the slime.

a similar thing happened to me recently. i mixed some molasses into my vegetable rez recently, i thought hydro could use molasses too :wall: wel i dont check the rez for the mators often, so about 2 days later i checked it and the hole rez was fucking frothy and the root mass was nothing but a fucking slimy mucky mess. i pulled about 60% of the roots off, and clipped a bunch of vegetation, and it has recovered well finally!! my wife and daughter laughed at me. thats usually what they do when i goof up!!! no respect, no respect
That does suck!

Mine wasn't slime after all, but it scared the crap out of me until I figured out what it was. It was just rock dust from the hydroton. Perfectly harmless and it just rinsed away. I even put the same water back. :D

I just got back from Ace Hardware with some new gadgets and stuff. Time to go play in the garage. But a hint, it has to do with spigots. I think I have a solution for my magnetic ballasts too!

Oh how I know the feeling!!!! I'm here for you GB!
i was gonna +rep this one, but i still cant rep you. i have been a given bastard too!!! time to give again i suppose :D

i think i may know where your going with the spigots!! cant wait to see if i am right

I don't know if I mentioned that the spigots of these drink coolers are removable so they can be washed. Even though it's the right idea, it takes over a minute to drain and I have to pull out on the spring loaded valve. My pour fingers just can't hang on that long! So I'm building a simple tube assembly out of 1" PVC fittings and a 3/4" barb and 3/4" vinyl tubing. I tried using a rubber gasket on the inside but it still leaked a bit so I used silicon instead.

This let's me do 3 things: drain the tank in less than 10 seconds, I can use a funnel and actually add water back, and it acts as a window to see the water level.

First pic shows the spigot removed and re-assembled.

Second pic shows the spigot and how it comes apart in the foreground, and the parts I'm replacing it with in the middle and the fully assembled tank.

So were you right?

that is a great idea. that was one of my thoughts, the other was you were gonna rig them to auto water from top somehow.

I've been toying with that idea too. But my volumes are too small and I think it would affect water temps. I'll be stopping the watering from the top as soon as I get roots in the water.

I think the constant, or semi-constant movement of water would stabilize the temps at a good number, wouldn't it? Kinda like a flowing river never gets a chance to warm up from alway moving. I agree to wait for your environment to be dialed in more precisely before you make any mod like that!

I think it would all be relative to ambient temps but yes I think it would lower temps. I'd either have to get a separate pump for each tank or come up with a manifold system that would share the water between all the tanks. The latter though wouldn't allow me to adjust individually. Right now I'll stay KISS. :)

Now that doesn't mean I can't make adjustments. It so happened that there are two different thread types, MPT and MIP, which are really close but no cigar. Two of the barbs I bought were correct and two weren't. That's a good thing! ;)

I went back to the hardware store to exchange for the right threads and when I went back to get what I wanted I saw the 3/4" barb elbows. I had issues with a leak even after gooping it up with silicon. So I also picked up some rubber gaskets, 1". I also used Teflon tape when connecting the elbow so it doesn't leak and it makes it real easy to do a 1/4 turn and use the tube to pour water off into a 1 gallon jug. It's sweet!

Here they are today. The screens makes me nervous (horrors of accidentally decapitating a plant) with them being so small but they need to be trained. I'm using paper clips (regular and the black clamp type) to continue their training. I got the idea from hanging Christmas ornaments and they are easy to unhook. I'll put the screens back on once they get bigger.

looks good, now keep doing what you been doing. i would keep nutes in the rez, and if you wanna flush, then just run plain water through the hydroton for a few minutes with an empty rez and then fill up with nute water!! i think they like the feeding you have them on, and probably would love to keep it up :D

Just went through your journal nice recovery man, i love the home made cab.
Thanks bro. Most of the cab build stuff was done in my New Cabinet Thread. I think there is more personal drama in this thread  but it's the grow. I keep thinking of starting a new thread but I go back and look at my mistakes and it's important for people to read the failures as well as the successes! I'm a good example of what NOT to do in lot's of cases, and I'm proof that growing weed isn't as easy as it looks! Hopefully I'm at the part of the story where the heroine pulls through and receives fame and fortune! :D

Thanks GB! Status Quo and KISS. That's what's nice about the new drain tubes. I just went out to check on the girls this morning. For each tank I was able to empty 1 Gal, test pH and adjust, pour back the gallon through the netpot, pull out another gallon, retest and pour back again all in less than 5 minutes and that included taking pics and spraying them down! Much better than the half hour it used to take!

Air temp = 74*
Water Temps = 67* +/-1*
pH = none higher than 6.05. All readjusted to 5.8.
PPM = 600 adjusted (1030 total)

Even though there is still a bit of yellowing tips, the plants continue to grow, leaves are getting greener and the root have all appeared below the pots and a couple are in the water! I think the 5*-6* raise in water temps has everything to do with the rapid increase of root development since nothing else has changed over the past few days and pH doesn't swing by any more than .4 on any given day.

As long as the water remains clear, no slime and stable measurements I'll just keep on keeping on. Once I get them all established in the water along with no more tip burns, I'll think of doing a water change and bump up the PPMs a bit more.

Now that I've stopped making such drastic changes to things and just let them grow, I'm finding it much easier to detect the more subtle changes in the plants (other than "dead or alive" ) on a day to day basis.

Pics are on there way as soon as I crop. I finally have root porn! :D

Root Porn! :D What you see occurred overnight! On some of the shots you can see more getting ready to emerge!

Nice :) can't wait for tomorrows pics cause shit is going to get interesting now :hump:
I'm sure you know the same feeling, but for me to peak in and see all those frosty white roots this morning, well it makes me blush!

Anyways I need to show the topside! I'm trying to get pics of them each day to be able to go back and look at progress!

Skywalker #1 - And to think I was ready to toss her? All of those lower nodes are still alive so I'm hoping to see some branches come forth! And she is one of two who actually made it to water down below!

Skywalker #2 - Look at that bottom node start to take off!

Skywalker #3 - I'm going to have to say she is the Grand Ma'am of them all! I would have to say she has two well established main stems. The stem coming from the bottom node is almost as thick as the main stem. This is cool! :blsmoke:
