So I thought I would chat a bit about Fall Time.
I dont know what all you folks enjoy fall time the most for other than the obvious, but for us it is the season of harvesting food for the freezer. We spend this time of year gathering wild berries, mushrooms, veggies, root tubers, etc. As well, we hunt several species of game. Moose would have to be the favorite. Caribou and bear are next on the list. Sheep if there is an opportunity, and then ducks and geese. Spruce Grouse and Willow Ptarmigan, and beaver rate high. Squirrel, and rabbit too. We are looking forward to moose season however due to it being just around the corner. Fall season is the relaxed hunt where there is opportunity for hunting trophy game as opposed to just meat hunting. There is the need for meat dont get me wrong, however if there were problems with taking a moose during that season, there is another hunt that happens during the winter. The fall hunt is when the moose are close to breading and thus respond to calling and luring behavior which makes for exciting hunts as well as numerous chances and encounters while looking for the big bull. Last year, we called in 6 bulls before taking one. At one point, we had three bulls at less then 50 yards from us all responding to a call that replicates a female moose ready to breed. It really raises the hairs on the back of your neck when you see three fight ready moose running in from different directions, trying to be the first to breed with you!
The encounter was worth the experience alone, but the end result was even better! The largest of the bulls was a monster that I couldnt help but want to make a table out of. The antlers were dark, huge and perfect. I needed a table. The meat was going to be tough and hard to get out of the woods, but filling two freezers at once is hard to pass up! Even better, the meat was not bad at all. Not the most tender, but not what I expected. The Rack, Better than expected! My wife and I had wanted to make a table out of moose antlers for years and years. This was the perfect one. All I need now is another single side almost as large or large and the table will be complete. This season I hope to do just that. If I do, I will post pictures of the table and see how you folks like it. Nothing like a moose antler table. And if I dont, Ill make a shit load of pipes from the antlers I do get and send them all to you folks who would like a moose antler pipe.
