I definitely would not have the balls to attempt the Straits of Magellan.

I hear about a piracy problem in the Caribbean. I have no details on type, frequency or locations. What have you heard?

In some places I'm sure there are criminals who will burglarize moored boats but I'm more concerned with corrupt authorities. On the high seas if you're in signal range of help and near lanes it is just a matter of planning. If you have a big mouth and you go around talking about precious possessions when sailing alone and people know when your visa is going to expire or when you plan to split, yeah they could lie in wait in a hidden cove with a fast motor boat. Generally the organized criminals are running shipments of contraband substances and won't risk that job just for an opportunity to steal. Just use your head you'll be fine. A dog will wake you if another craft approaches while you're using the autopilot. That's only needed if you're sailing alone and you don't have a buddy to take a turn on watch.

Are you planning to sail alone? I'm not sure I'd want to try it. Too much can go wrong that needs more than one set of hands to handle.

I'm sure if I made it to Roatan or Cozumel with a boat of my own I would have plenty of friends around wanting to dive. That life isn't for everyone. Mostly people spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a sailing yacht and do very little sailing while their property depreciates because the reality doesn't match their vision. I have sea water running in my veins but I still have much to learn. I'm sure after my first few years I would be enough of an expert to sail alone.

That sounds like a pretty damned sexy life to me! I have open water, search and rescue and drive master SCUBA certifications from NAUI.

Using my own sailboat for a dive platform is the kind of lifestyle even millionaires dream about.

I'm not trying to defend this guy in particular. Buck gets off on trying to humiliate people on here like it's his job...which considering his post count it very well may be.

If I had a million bucks I would probably just open up my own diving center somewhere.

He's gotten a lot more bitter and mean-spirited since November of last year. I can't help but think there's a correlation.

He has never once insulted me or even attempted to do so. We disagree plenty but what I have seen is that he insults people who insult him or who are bigots and profer generally offensive language. If someone is clearly a bigot, he will unilaterally begin his offense and he even does so in such a way so as to give them a chance to be cool and they never are. I have seen @UncleBuck show deference to conservatives and centrists who are not offensive. I have even seen him permit a little bit of ball busting if it is tactful.

There are actually that many racists and fuckwits around that the guy is constantly having to insult them despite all this. I know because I have a very similar approach. Just a couple days ago me and @londonfog had such an exchange. He and I definitely do not see eye to eye. Yet we managed not to escalate it to polemics. The bigotry should not be tolerated.

He's broken both of those 'rules' with me, hence my lack of respect for him.

I agree that bigotry should not be tolerated, but I don't engage in it- so he's fresh out of an excuse in my case.
