The new QB 648 Diablo from Horticulture Lighting Group

When you see the new HLG Scorpion, you will wonder... Why didn’t I think of that?

Looks great and congratulations to the peeps at HLG.

Can’t post the picture yet and I don’t want to give away their design but it looks pretty damn cool.

There will be two versions of the light, the regular 600W version and the 630W “Diablo” spec. Pricing is $1099 600W (2.7umol/j) and $1399 630W Diablo (3.0 umol/j). Super stoked to pick 2 of them up when I get the space I need to grow.

I see a list of driver options for the QB648 diablo on the few sites that still list them for sale. I don't see any options for CV drivers though, except the "HLG-120H-54" under the advisory "Following driver are Compatible but will require some dimming under continuous operation.:"

Would an hlg-320h-54 run the QB648, and if so, how many?

The highest i ran a single was 3000mA. The heatsink got extremely hot, and i used thermal adhesive between the board and sink.
With 2 648's at half that amperage i feel like its a good spot. So i would run 4 under that driver, or 2 with it dialed back to the lowest amperage

I just found lab report regarding the hlg 350r fixture. It says the driver is an INVENTRONICS EUD-320S320DT, but I don't know what the current would be set to on the driver by HLG, if not the stock setting from inventronics (think the stock setting for that driver is 2.2A or something).

I have always used cc drivers. Nice to let the driver take the voltage where it needs to be based on your fixtures current requirements. Some will disagree, but i havent had a fixture burn up yet.

I just have some spare drivers already and was hoping to use them. I'll have to check with hlg probably.

I'm pretty sure that HLG will still sell diablo's directly if you call and ask nicely, they just won't give you any warranty on them in case you hook them up backwards and fry them. I'm not sure they work with they "54" drivers tho. I'd call HLG and ask.

Yeah, that's why I'd call them directly. I can't seem to remember the details, but I do have a vauge memory when the diablos first came out that they didn't work with HLG-xxxH-54 series drivers. I only remember that because I own HLG-240H-54A's, and I remember thinking that I would need to get new drivers to run the diablos if I were to upgrade. It's possible that I'm confused, but asking HLG directly seems like the best route to me.

Anyway, I just double checked something and I do see that the voltage spec for the qb288 is 54V, and for the qb648 it's 56V. So, this probably has something to do with it...?

Yeah, and I notice that they don't seem to suggest parallel wiring at all. All of their driver recommendations for multiple boards seem to be for series setups. It seems like you can run a single board from a HLG-120H-54 driver, so not sure if the issue is voltage drop for two parallel boards or the diablos have some issue with parallel.

Bump from the dead. So has anyone used the 648 qb to build their own light similar to the scorpion diablo? Was it worth it for your time and money? Im debating building one using legit parts or just buying a SD and being done with it. Ill be using it in a 4x8 tent to start. Is there any major cons going with the scorpion diablo over the scorpion r spec?

Just wait a few months until the next improvement happens and then all these lights will go on sale...But the problem is that you might want the new one....and then.....well, you get the idea!

I think HLG should build a square-shaped board for the 3 X 3 tent grower and use all the currently best stuff....and then don't EVER change the specs later on. No matter what, just keep making that one fixture the same exact way, year in and year out. Call it "The Brown Recluse"

I think @pop22 did, but he put'em on a big red heatsink...so it looks like a 550 rspec I think.
Up to you if you wanna buy it premade or assemble your own fixture.

Don't forget about the Warranty thing is you DIY with Diablo Boards

Well my buddy has a brand new scorpion diablo in the box with 120v cord i could buy for a deal. I seen on the hlg website it can be ordered with a 120v or 240v cord. Does this mean the 120v cord model cant be plugged into 240v? Would I just need to order a new cord?

Thanks for sharing that info, I wasnt aware they sold refurbished ones. Thats def a better deal than my buddys.
