The homeless/zombie crisis.

there is so much here that does not align with my experiences in portland...

portland is very compassionate to their homeless. this is a fact that you and clayton hate, and the very reason i am glad to have never met either of you.

this thread is the least portland thing that ever tried to portland in the history of portland.
Since you called me out..

You left Portland years ago, but don;t let that stop you from being a self righteous, blow hard, expert on everything

Portland has changed dramatically in the last couple of years. Read these stories from the Associated Press, KGW, The Oregonian, etc. Read the comments from ACTUAL Portlanders, you know the ones you claim to know and speak for.

PORTLAND, Ore. » There have always been homeless people in Portland, but last summer Michelle Cardinal noticed a change outside her office doors.
Almost overnight, it seemed, tents popped up in the park that runs like a green carpet past the offices of her national advertising business. She saw assaults, drug deals and prostitution. Every morning, she said, she cleaned human feces off the doorstep and picked up used needles.
“It started in June and by July it was full-blown. The park was mobbed,” she said. “We’ve got a problem here and the question is how we’re going to deal with it.”

The city is booming, and the homeless are more visible than ever before. Skyrocketing rents, cripplingly low vacancy rates and a severe shortage of affordable housing are forcing Portland to re-examine its live-and-let-live attitude in a place where residents have long been tolerant of everything but intolerance.

The 3 Biggest Problems with Portland

I love Portland, but we have problems here too. Portland is getting bigger and we are dealing with big cities...

I am all for helping homeless families, and the mentally ill. Please tell me you think that every homeless person out there is mentally ill, a family who fell on hard times, or a disabled vet. Talk about out of touch with reality. This country has tens of millions of people who just want to live off of the system and take money from people willing to give it instead of doing something for themselves.

A great read about our social services problem:

just to demonstrate how full of shit you are, care to name all the businesses that went under due to homeless people?

thanks.

http://www.kptv.com/story/32785092/businesses-residents-upset-over-aggressive-homeless-population-in-hawthorne-neighborhood

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Businesses in the Hawthorne neighborhood are unhappy with what they consider an increasingly confrontational homeless population in the area, with reports of aggressive panhandling, vandalism and even death threats.

"It's scary for people. Because you have families here. I have a little girl," Matthew Stimley, who works at Veloce Bicycles on Hawthorne Boulevard, said. “Who knows what goes on at night. I think that's when a lot of the problems go down.”

Stimley said he was recently confronted by an aggressive transient, who spat at him after he said "Hello."

In another recent incident, a Hawthorne business owner, who preferred to remain anonymous, said a man on the street was loudly confronting customers, shouting at employees and making threats of physical harm.

"It's a lot of unstable people," Stimley said. "I'm no mental health expert, but I can see some people have issues."

Those issues, in particular, present a problem for Portland police officers. According to the department's policy and state law, an officer can't take a person suffering from a mental health condition anywhere unless they're suspected of committing a crime or are considered a danger to themselves or others.

Timur Sipra, who runs a food cart on Hawthorne, said he believes police officers are doing the best they can but also wishes something could be done about the increase in confrontations.

"I don't want my customers being harassed. I don't want people to be harassed," he said. “The mayor has had maybe something to do with that. He's told the police to be extra nice to them. Perhaps they can all go stay at the mayor's house.”

Some Hawthorne businesses have discussed the possibility of pooling their resources to hire a private security company to patrol the neighborhood.

Portland Mayor Charlie Hales recently announced a reversal in the city's camping policy, which currently allows people to camp on city property between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.

should you ever find yourself homeless again (as you claim), be happy that someone such as I will give you some canned food and this scrap shopping cart somebody left by my dumpster.

And I'll actually wish you luck and maybe offer you some part time work, as I can always use a laborer.

Everybody is up against it at some point.
Wish him luck? Pshhhh, you are a better man than I -- I'd scowl at him and withhold food from him, reserving it for the more deserved.
Maybe he can hook up with that 'fdd' scumfuck and they can discuss "euthanizing the homeless". Better still, maybe they can fill their pockets with stones and go for a swim.

I'm taking a few cases of Progresso Chickarina and some old toys down to a local soup kitchen this weekend, something we do on the regular.....I sincerely hope that the soup will not be consumed by vile fuckers like these two.

that's what i thought. op-ed opinions from loser yokels like yourself, and unable to name a single business that has shut down due to the homeless, despite the breathless protestations about how many poor business owner had to do just that.

you don't even live downtown, either.

big LOL @ citing "retireby40.org". you really have your finger on the pulse.

What did you expect? He's yet another dumbass racist loser hiding out in relative safety among the T n' T ranks.....

Based on some of the cringeworthy 'former mods' and their ilk/sycophants, I'm betting this place was quite the den of bigoted rednecks back in the day. (It's got it's share these days, mind, but still in all.)
to be fair, clayton doesn't just get his rocks off on blaming his life's failures on the homeless, he also scapegoats illegal immigrants too.

there is no group so vulnerable that clayton won't demonize and dehumanize in order to feel better about himself.

I'm shocked.

Do you think his avatar is meant to be ironic?

You know...I don't really believe that.

When I graduated from HS in 1972, I could have worked at 17 different places right out of school. 6 union steel mills, a union foundry, 2 coal companies, the RR, a RR car company, a half dozen different construction companies, plus all the minimum wage jobs of which there were many.

There were no homeless people here because everybody wanted a job (and the life that comes with it) and the jobs were there.

I think virtually every homeless person in Portland would take those 1972 jobs if they were available today, as opposed to collecting a gov't. check or just hanging in the streets.

Those were good paying jobs with benefits and retirement plans back then, abundant jobs, they hired every single year.

Those people don't have the opportunties I had, that's the simple difference.

Anybody would take a good job over a handout.

Maybe if the 1% weren't so greedy and maybe if the 99% were more patriotic and willing to spend a little more on American made products...maybe we wouldn't be in this mess today. Maybe.

Sooo The associated press, local television news station and The Oregonian are BS?

I don;t claim to live downtown, and you didn;t live downtown either. You brought up my name so I pointed out that you don;t really know what you are talking about when it comes to Portland, or me. Again, don;t let that stop you from acting like an authority. It's your way. Good luck on the next 100k posts. I'll be in reality. Portland is having some serious problems with shitty homeless people, even the decent homeless who struggle speak out against them.

You can fabricate and discredit me all you want, like the church of Scientiology does its critics, I don;t care. You're like Kim Jong-il here; whatever you say. Houseplayer.

Unlike you. I WAS a homeless teen for a year, then I lived in the projects in a major city. I have done way more for the homeless than you will ever pretend to.
Hope we never meet irl.

still waiting for a full list of businesses that shut down due to "the shitty homeless people".

all i've heard about n this thread is the plight of these helpless business owners and how they have had to shut down the businesses that they laid so much work into, their hopes and their dreams, only to go under because cretins like you can't stand walking past a fucking homeless encampment.

what's the matter, was all that bullshit?

maybe boise is a better fit for you.

THIS.

We live in the Age of Walmart; even my phone's Swype dictionary came conveniently preloaded with hundreds of corporate names. These corporations have sold Americans the dream of cheap imported goods while selling our jobs and prosperity down the river.

Here's a graphic of how much of America's economic 'recovery' was captured by the upper crust;

WageGrowthMap.png

The point is not that I hate rich people, it's that income inequality has exploded and it's tearing at the fabric of our country. Even if you ARE rich, this adversely impacts your quality of life, opportunities, security, and safety now and in the future.
