Holy shit do you know how hard it is to volunteer around here? I tried for almost a month to get some volunteer gigs and then gave up. You have to pass a criminal background check first, then you have to get "hired" by a place to come help out. I emailed a pile of places and they were either all full, didn't return my emails, wanted more than a one day a week commitment, but seriously most of them didnt even return my emails. I finally gave up out of frustration.

Very true. This is a hard thing to deal with. If there were such facilities out there, they would be jail like in my opinion but maybe without the incarnation part. Places where people are fed, clothed, and taken care of with medical help as well. Places where people who want help can go to escape the cold, the drugs, and the problems associated with the lifestyle. Places that would let you detox and take care of you while you do it. Then there could be a program to get them back into the work force and ultimately taking care of themselves.

i never had a problem with it. i was glad they had shelter and a community where they could be slightly more safe.

I could care less about where they are. My wife and her friends on the otherhand, well they do care. Theyre scared of the homeless people because theyre pushy and mean. And its consumer choices like that that are putting hard working people out of business. I just saw the other day another place closed their doors because of the problems theyve been having, customers complaing that theres people smoking meth and shooting up across the street. They wont be coming back next monday for lunch.

I understand theres people with real problems out there. Obviously they cant be tossed into a mall to wipe tables down. Its the ones that can be helped that the country isnt taking care of thats the problem. I don't know the stats on what percentage is actually crazy, youre better at finding numbers, but if there were more intensive facilities to help and treat these people who are saveable, i think thst would do more good than just handing someone a buck to go help them possibly od. Or declaring land offically property of the homeless and putting tiny houses on it.

there is so much here that does not align with my experiences in portland and knowledge of where you are.

you do not live anywhere near any homeless person. they live downtown, you do not live there. you don't give two shits about anything that is happening downtown.

if you do not like the residents around you supporting a tax to support the homeless, then you can move or vote harder next time.

portland is very compassionate to their homeless. this is a fact that you and clayton hate, and the very reason i am glad to have never met either of you.

this thread is the least portland thing that ever tried to portland in the history of portland.

Lol, no i dont live near any homeless people. I dont hate the homeless, i just dont like whats being done to deal with the problem. I cant see tiny houses leaving camps up forever a solution to the problem. In my eyes thats just making the problem worse, and the whole Portland philosophy of giving them whatever they want is also perpetuating the problem.

Ah i was just trying to get a debate going. Ive never lit a homeless person on fire or thrown one in the wood chipper. But i do feel bad for the portland small busines shop owners that are going belly up. And the garbage. So much trash to be picked up on the streets. And its like, do ya pick up a bag you see and toss it in the trash? Or is that someones stuff in there that theyll be back for?

How is it trolling? I can just see the veiwpoint of the small businesses going out of business because of the problem. These people put their lives into these places and are being driven out by people that are desroying the area. People that have worked hard to build their dreams are suffering because portlands homless are chasing away customers. Whos rights should be protected? The guy shooting up across the street, or the guy who has $200,000 of hard earned money invested into his dream with a family to feed from non food stamp money?
