I have my res sitting on top of a milk crate. With the drain plug I can drain into a 3 1/2 gallon bucket, makes it very easy.

I also did not fill all six holes, I left one open (covered) so I could monitor pH, levels, refill easier.

Peace - :peace:
That's my setup as well. Much less work with the reservoir elevated and using the drain plug. I recommend it to everyone.

That's the way I figured it when I started, also to get the res up so easier to work on the plants for whatever you need to do. My base is now at 21" above the floor, I don't want to set the res directly on the cold floor so a milk carton would probably be my next step.

Not sure how long, rule of thumb of course is 9 weeks, other than that it's just a guess for me. But I've got my loupe handy when the time comes!

Well I used my loupe this morning, those are definitely trichs developing. Still pretty early, give them a few more days and they'll be shining! It feels so close yet I know it's quite a long way off, early Feb. before I chop.

Hope your day is going as good as mine!

All right, cool, I just got my tds meter, now I feel I'm ready to get the most out of my flowering!

Fryday night! It's the weekend! Hope you're all ready for the holidays.

Just finished up my Christmas shopping, my granddaughter was the toughest for me to shop for, I mean what do you get for a 16 month old little girl. I bought a big stuffed dog and a little stuffed dog, a couple of books and some thing her folks need such as diapers.

I'm having fun! Hope you are too.

FPF: Great thread. I'm a little ahead of you on the grow schedule. I have two girls in bloom in hydro and one in soil (because the wife thinks it's a pretty plant and likes to move it around the house from time to time). But your by-the-book documentation looks perfect. Good job and props for the positive vibes from this thread. Sorry for calling you Satan in the other thread. I can see you're more like a Buddhist St. Thomas Aquinas but with better weed. Cheers and best wishes for a successul grow.

That's funny about your wife, I can't argue with her, though I may appreciate the beauty for a different reason!

Thanks for all the compliments, I'm trying to keep things light, too much trouble in this world as it is, I'm just trying to make my corner a little brighter and hopefully make a bunch of friends along the way.

I almost forgot about the satan comment, can't even remember what it was referring to, glad to call you one of my friends now. Not sure about the St. Thomas Aquinas reference, but I do study Buddhism and am trying to be more like him. We all have buddha inside us, everyone has the capacity to be and do good for everyone.

Keep it up man, you made my morning a lot brighter, thanks!

Hey man, I re-read your post from last night, I took it as all a joke, you can call me whatever you like when your joking, you should hear some of the things my ex-wife calls me!

Al right, today is res change day. I've been doing a bunch of reading about nute concentrations and proportions. I found this formula for determining what proportions of any brand nute you buy to use when adding to your res and what concentration (ppm) it will give you. Take some of the mystery out of it for me. I'm one of those who has to know exactly what is going on, I don't do too well in situations where someone tells me to just do it and not ask questions. Here's a link. http://www.angelfire.com/cantina/fourtwenty/articles/profiles.htm

So today, I'm using the Advanced nutes. I got my TDS meter yesterday so now I can finally measure what I just put in and see how the plants react. My first number to obtain was the tds of my water, approx. 350 (my meter isn't that great, an el cheapo, but it won't hurt me to replace it either). I'm beginning the third week of flowering so I wanted to hit a concentration of approx. 1100 ppm in the res, that's before my 350 for my water so I should be looking at 1450 total ppm. The water I took out of the res was at 1100.

After using the feeding schedule for the Advanced nutes it calculated out to 2.38 tsp/gal or ~5 tbs (4.76 to be exact) for the 6 gal res for each of the two parts. While adding them it just seemed excessive so I only used 4 tbs of each, total of 8 tbs total. I poured it into the res, took out a sample and it read 950, 600 ppm of the nutes, pretty low. So I drew out a gallon and added another 2 tbs of each part and 2 tbs of Big Bud. I poured this into the res, drew a sample and then hit 1150, or 800 ppm on the nutes. But by now the light had gone off so I had to call this good.

On the face of it I feel this is a little light, but prior to this I was using about 1/2 the nutes at the res change (I'll have to go back in my journal and verify quantity) so I am afraid to add more right now. But, I have been adding a 1/6 dose to the gallon of water I add to the res every day, this may have been building up the concentration through out the week. That's why I needed this damn meter, so I would know exactly what's happening, again, I hate flying blind. Actually, thinking about it now, this may be a good strategy for upping the nutes, do it daily, a little at a time. But there are those who contend tou don't need to change the concentration.

My plants are doing great, I just want to make sure they get what they need for good bud production. Almost a little too great, I need to get over to the grow store and buy a net for the tops, the plants are starting to fall over in the res they are so top heavy, and no real bud production yet, I can't wait until they are in full bloom!

So we'll se how they look tomorrow, I'm thinking just fine, but every time you change something you have to pay attention. I'll update tomorrow.

Sorry no pics, I spent too much time on the nutes, didn't have time before the light turned off.

As some of you may know I've been struggling with these nutes, not having plant issues, but more with the cost and need for some of these outrageously expensive additives. I used the SH grow nutes and had fantastic success, but I decided to go with something else for the bloom. A neighbor, and several people online here, recommended Advanced, so I went to the grow store, bought a liter each of Sensi Bloom parts A & B and a liter of Big Bud, the guy at the store told me they were the best, and add as much of the Big Bud as you want, there's nothing in there that can hurt you plant.

Okay, the Sensi A & B add up to an analysis of 5.8-6.1-8.8, or 6-6-9, not a bad mixture, Uncle Ben recommends a mix of 1-3-2, not much different really. Adding the Big Bud raises it to 5.8-8.1-12.8 or 6-8-13, getting pretty heavy on the K. From what I've been reading you need more of a balance, yes when you flower the plant will shift more toward needing less N and more P & K, but you still need the N. Now I see where using too much K can inhibit the plants ability to use the N, therefore the yellowing and dying lower fan leaves, they are not seeing enough N. for my first week and a half of flowering I used only the Sensi A&B, no Big Bud, nothing happened other than rapid growth (those following know my plants are doing just fine). Then the last few days I've begun adding the Big Bud, can't hurt right? Well today I am seeing my first fan leaves dying, only two though.

I'm thinking the Big Bud may have overdosed the K and is now choking out the N and that's the reason for the fan leaf dying (only two so far). I still used some of the Big Bud today, but I think I'll stop using it for now until I see what's happening to the fan leaves, at least a few days. I'm pissed I spent the $42 on that one little liter of Big Bud, but everyone is foolish at one time or another.

This nute question seems to be a pretty passionate one, there are those who are insulted by the fact that the high dollar nutes they've been spending their money on are probably no better than what you can buy at Wal-Mart, and they are ready to fight about it. Well, I'm not one of those, I more in the way of being insulted by the asking price for these nutes, damn advertising.

I have a lot more research to do, but yesterday I found a profile calculator to use in determining exactly what concentrations of what nutrients are in any nute you buy. I'd like to do some analysis of all the other nutes in my closet that I've been using on my house plants and out in the yard. A quick glance at one of the boxes of Miracle Grow looked promising. The next question then is how much to use to get what concentration, but that's the reason for the calculator. Here's a link:
http://www.angelfire.com/cantina/fourtwenty/articles/profiles.htm

Hope this helps getting a conversation going regarding the use of alternative nutes, sorry, but I don't want to argue which commercial brand to use, I'm not going to fight with anyone if they want to use the Fox Farm or Advanced or whatever brand, have at it, I hope you have a lot of success. Right now I'm interested in what I can conveniently buy at my local garden store and not cost me an arm and a leg.

Here's an interesting article on how often you need to change the res.
http://www.angelfire.com/cantina/fourtwenty/articles/nutrientsolutionmgmt.htm

Right now the only reason I can see to change the water is to correct the nutrient ratio and air the roots. More on this subject when I know more about it, I'm getting there.

Hope you're having a great day, time for me to get outside, the sun is shining and the weather is beautiful.

Hay Flyer! what is up Bro, where are the pictures of your grow, I would love to see the progess you have happening with it.

Check my bud action happening. https://www.rollitup.org/3547526-post46.html
Sorry, I was a little late today with the nute change. I have my lights set to run from midnight to moon giving me heat in the coldest part of the day yet still give me some time to work on the plants in the morning. But, I had a little too much fun last night and didn't get the res change with the nute analysis done until just after the lights shut off, I didn't want to leave the lights on any longer so I shut it down for the night. I'll put some up tomorrow!

One problem I've run into is the plants have gotten so tall that they need support to stand in the res. I'm thinking of putting a net up at the tops, let them grow through, not tied tight allowing me to still move the res around for inspection of the back side buds.

One more thing, at least it's not a bad problem to have!

Hey Fry got a few ?'s

My plants are really veggin' now and I was wondering when and how often you fed them during your veg?

For the last 2 weeks I have just changed the resevoir twice and added nutes at 1/4 strength so far I have not added any nutes when I have topped off the water.

Oh yeah my plants are drinking roughly 2 quarts of water a day this week up from less than 1 last week.

What are your thoughts my man? Thanks in advance

Hey fry I couldn't agree more the only reason I am using the nutes I am using is it seemed for $29.99 the Technaflora nute kit was the easiest to use. I knew all along I was not going to use SH nutes but I can't see paying those prices (advanced, fox farms,) might as well buy your weed instead of growing it. You might save money depending how much you toke.

Hey Ghost, hope everything is going good, how's that little one doing? You ready for Christmas yet?

I need to look at your plants again but you've already topped them once haven't you? You're probably at the stage I was when I started with clones. What I did was give them 1/2 nutes at res change, then I add 1/4 two days later, then the other 1/4 at day 4 , three days prior to the next res change. I did that for two weeks, then I went to full strength the next three weeks. By end of the third week I was adding about 1 gal. a day. That's when I started doing the nute supplement every time I added water. If I used a gal. I'd add a 1/6 dose when I filled the res every day. I did that for the last two weeks until I went to 12/12. I think I was pretty conservative the first two weeks, but the last two weeks was pretty aggressive, but no burn.

One trick I added that Roseman alluded to. He warned about a growth spurt when he changed the res and thought it was mostly because the roots got air. So I started just draining the res and putting the water back in at least every other day. Don't know how much it did, but the plants didn't seem to mind it.

Remember, I used the SH nutes so I was flying blind as to exactly what the hell I was giving them, but no burn so it worked. I'm now trying to figure out what the heck I'm doing with the flowering nutes. I added a bunch this morning, I broke the rule and looked in on them a bit ago, 5 hours after the light turned off and adding the nutes, they all look great right now.

Did you see the the nute calculator I gave the link to? You can use that to figure out nute concentrations to use a different brand of nute if you'd like, I'm pretty bummed about the prices I've seen so far. But if you're smart you'll do like my neighbor, wait until I figure it out. He knows I'll study it top to bottom and back up again, then turn it inside out and do it again until I know what I'm talking about. I've got a box of Miracle Grow on my shelf that has exactly the proportions Uncle Ben is talking about and everything I've read backs him up 100%. I've already cut back on the Big Bud because I think I'm seeing a problem he's mentioned. Big Bud put too much K into my water, this will block the N from maintaining the lower fan leaves turning them yellow and then falling off.

Okay, time to run, gotta fill this belly of mine. Plus I just picked up an eighth of Northern Lights from the dispensary I'm planning to grow for. I'm itching to give it a try. Wow, I can talk your ear off can't I.

:peace:
