On February 4th, 2009, the Federal Government enacted legislation to fund
the expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) that
increases excise taxes on cigarettes by 158%.

As a result, you will see the price of all cigarettes, including ours, increase
in retail stores.

We know times are tough, so we'd like to help. We invite you to register
at Marlboro.com to become eligible for cigarette coupons and special offers
using this code: ******
Thank You,
Philip Morris USA

Lets just say the tax tactic works. it discourages smoking, and everyone quits.
who now pays for schip?
(smoking= healthcare for kids, sounds noble to me:shock:)
If future smokers were a stock(kids of today) guess who bought in?
children depending on future cancer patients is just wrong on so many levels..

voted in a 158% tax increase:-?
anyone want to even touch that subject?
:spew:

Taxes are put in place to make money for big government right? If you tax an item off the face of the earth how are you gonna make any revenue off of it? I swear to god everyone in Washington must be a fucking idiot.

I just had an epiphany. Government taxes the hell out of alcohol and cigs because :

A. They can.
B. Because of the addictive nature its easier for people to pay then it is to quit.

I bet you part of the reason why pot isn't legal yet is because of the fact that pot is not addictive.

If you have a product that people can and will find other means to attain should the price get to high, then there really isn't that much motivation to make said substance legal.

I did, so did my best freind we both quit. I did just a few days ago. Fuck them and their tax. Should just grow my own but Pot is better anyway. But don't worry if tax revenue goes down they will just print money to pay for all their shit so fear not!!

BTW quiting sucks ass I can taste them, its been days, and I can taste them.
Here is how I quit it sucks but you can do it.
1. throw out all your butts and empty packs (you will try to smoke partially smoked butts, I did)
2. smoke your last cig just before bed
3. drink lots of water (nothing sugery)
4. keep busy
5. get plenty of sleep (if your asleep you ain't thinking about smoking)
6. stay away from other smokers for a while if you can

Oh and maybe Phillip Morris should start fighting to get Pot leagalized they got the Leet Lobbiests!!

Phillip Morris is lying to you. 3 weeks ago, the place where I buy cigs had a big sign up that said " All Phillip Morris cigs will be having a MANUFACTURER INCREASE of 70 cents per pack starting March 16. Then they listed all the brand Phillip Morris makes.

Yes the government does over tax cigs, but part of this shit is the company. They need their bonus checks too you know.

Shouldn't the overly taxed things be stuff like Hummers, Yachts, private jets, Limo services, .... etc.......

Aside from a sign at your smoke shop, is there any proof you have that it's the company and not just a tax?

Yes, on March 16 the price went up by 70 cents in every store.

It is possible for manufacturers to raise the price. Any proof that is was a tax and not a manufacturer's increase?

The federal cigarette excise tax will increase to $1.00 on April 1, 2009 as part of the State Children's Health Insurance Plan (SCHIP) bill that was signed into law by President Obama on February 4, 2009.

Once again, I'll type really slowly here, maybe you can follow me.

The manufacturer increase went into effect March 16 2009.

The tax increase takes effect April 1 2009.

That is 2 (two) increases in 2 (two) weeks time. The March 16 increase was a corporate increase.

Phillip Morris snaked in their increase under the guise of taxes. It's a federal tax increase and a 70 cent cost increase.

Not to change the subject, but you are aware that regardless of how slowly you type, it still shows up on our screens at the same time... Right?

I guess you can't understand sarcasim. I'm not going to argue this out with you. Phillip Morris is lying, they rasied their prices and are blaming the whole thing on taxes.

Check for yourself. The tax increase doesn't start until this coming Wednesday, yet the manufacturer increased their own prices March 16.

I know it's hard for you to believe that a cigarette company would lie to you, but here's a little secret, yes they will.

I had the date wrong, they raised them March 9 not 16, but they still raised them.

BLOOMBERG NEWS
Published: March 5, 2009

Altria Group Inc., the largest U.S. tobacco company, will raise prices on Marlboro and 17 brands on March 9 ahead of an increase in federal tobacco excise taxes.

Altrias Philip Morris USA will charge distributors 71 cents more for a pack of Marlboro, the top-selling U.S. cigarette, Parliament, Virginia Slims and six other varieties, said Bill Phelps, an Altria spokesman. In addition, the company will raise list prices on Bensen & Hedges and eight other brands by 81 cents a pack.

The increase is the second by Philip Morris USA since December and comes before U.S. tobacco excise taxes rise by 62 cents a pack. Reynolds American Inc., which trails Philip Morris USA by sales, also raised some cigarette prices in December as manufacturers blunt the impact of falling demand from higher taxes and the recession.

This is primarily intended to cover the cost of the federal excise-tax increase, Phelps said. The tax is currently 39 cents a pack."

It won't hurt the tobacco companies. they raised their prices ahead of the tax to offset any decline....they work these things out to the N'th degree. It's a dog and pony show.

The funniest part is while the Govt. greedily sucks up the tax money, they make corp's who sell a legal product run ads to tell folks not to buy their product... a pitard of the highest order.

out. :blsmoke:
