Usually when there are government interventions , regulations, licensing, prohibitions etc. consumer prices rise and choice reduces. These barriers prevent free market solutions from being implemented and are often a form of protectionism. For example, cannabis prices are artificially high due to the government restrictions.
The "individual market" you mention was never a free market. The coming "Obamacare" is a bigger step toward even less freedom of choice than the regulated market of today that people commonly mistake for a "free market" . Comparing the cost of a crony capitalism market to Obama's pseudo communist / socialist / fascist (pick your own "ist") plan is like comparing dog shit to pig shit. They both stink.
You've never really addressed why you think it is okay for a government to MAKE individual people buy something they don't want to. How come?
