NooB Advice

I've got a light meter riddle, but even with the lights 32" away it still reads 10K+ lumens at the tops and around 6-7k inside the lower growth. The plants stopped growing for a while due to the problems I talked about earlier in the thread, but they are around 2 ft now and the 600w is penetrating all but the bushiest areas of them with ease. The buds are forming up, and I have a ton of bud spots, but I still have some problems to correct. I haven't had access to the camera for a few weeks so I haven't been able to get any pics to post, and without those it's hard for anyone to offer an opinion.

You're right, but as I know from personal experience new growers tend to forget about the "see what your plants are telling you and then adjust" part unless constantly reminded. I shut my plants down for almost 10 days because I focused too much on the "do this" part of the advice when it came to spider mites and overlooked the fact that my plants weren't reacting well when it would have still been easy to correct.
well because of my ongoing faith in humanity i try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt....besides i don't mind repeating myself... :bigjoint:

Side Note : this isn't a absolute science and i only speak from experiences i have had but after all it is basically gardening and ANYTHING can and will happen so just use common sense .. and the worst thing that can happen is you have to plant another seed to obsess over ... but the good part of that is if you use clones you get to obsess twice as fast twice as often :)

If you are just now reading the new post that are in this thread, I would like to invite you to read the first 40 pages of this thread as it is full of the info that new growers need to know

It started with simple advice geared to get folks to calm down, then there was some disagreements (what I call entertaining debate) Then it goes into a class that I ran to help new growers understand some simple concepts, everything you need to know to dial a soil grow is in there!

There are questions that were asked, you as a new reader do not need to answer, the answers are there just read on, and following links that were given is a plus to get your grow foundation solid

Good Luck and have fun

whens a good time to start lsting your young plants? recent pics of mine in my sig..do you think theyre ready?
I would say they are a bit young yet. I have put up a pic of when I first LST'd Matilda it was first few weeks of flowering, you can see the holes I drilled in the 2 gallon pot to attach the wire ties I used

It is important to envision how you intent to train her, in my case I wanted the bulb to go down inside the branches

It also matters how the plant grows and how you train it in other ways, in my case I topped twice to get 6 colas

this is more into the realm of advanced LST but have you ever split the *Y* ...what i mean is not just tying down the main plant but tying down the different branches in different directions to not just make more colas and bud sites but to open them ALL up to light evenly ?? bongsmilie

No not yet, but it is an experiment for the future, I am also interested in a concept that UB once mentioned about trainin em to a wire like a grape vine

I am letting Matilda re-veg because I never got clones off her and she was a real trouper so I really want to clone her

then once we get our new house, I will set up new grow room with CMH and movable reflective panels, I will also be going for bigger bushier plants, mostly top to get 10 (or more) colas

Speaking of cmh lighting? Have you found a place you are going to get the equipment from? I thought you posted a link before but could not find it. I have researched the bulb and I think it is definately the one to go with.

Interesting you say that because in the first week of the plants life there was some intense lighting fluctuations as my timer was working. (some day the plants had 6 hours a dark, sometimes 8) im pretty sure 8 was the latest. Is it even possible for a plant to show sex this young?..and may i have accidently forced my plant to show its sex so early?

hey how can u tell if ur plants are stretching?
It varies between plant types (indica, sativa) and also between the various strains

A sativa will have a greater distance between nodes (internodal spacing)

A indica will be shorter and bushier with less space between the nodes

Ideal internodal spacing will be somewhat consistant ie an inch between each new set of leaves (an inch being an example, not a rule)

so lets say you have 3 set of leaves on a 3 week old plant and the space between the nodes (leaf sets) is 1 inch, all of the sudden going into week 4 it grows 2 inches before the new leaves come out,,,,,it is stretching and is a response to something in your garden changing

if you have a seedling that has a 3 inch stem before the first leaves show ,,,,it is stretching and probably means your light is to far away

Hope that helps

hey whats happening? i was wondering what would cause my plant to arch like this? it wasnt over watering or under watering since i stressed it both ways (trying to learn to read my plants) it doesnt seem to mater what i do it just wont change its stance. when i let it tell me that it wanted water the leaves sides curled up. and when i over watered it just stunted the growth.
right now its in a 16oz party cup with black gold seedling soil and no nutes going into week 3 of veg on 20/4.
i am using 4 24watt 5000k CFLs for 4 sprouts and 2 clones (the clones are getting the second hand light)

The pic shows an overwatered plant

when underwatered the plant will look exactly the same with one difference the stems will droop

what you describe as leaf tips/edges curling up is the plant transpiring too hard a condition of heat/moisture stress (temps to high, humidity off, light to close etc)

You need to let it dry out till the stems droop and then water it (just this time, not every time as that is bad for it) once you see the stems droop pick it up and feel the wieght of it, then go by that for when to water

Ahh I see I was under the impression.that the transpiring and when to water were the same. Will it it perk up before it droops again?
