Well, I'm finally starting to get my setup finished. Hopefully soon I'll be able to do a full blackstar grow journal. Right now my plants have been mixed lighting throughout the grow. Once I get my next shipment in I'll have a total of 8 blackstar. 2x4 veg tent with 2 blackstar veg models (currently have them and might get 1 more in the future). My flower tent is a 4x4 that will have 6 blackstar flower models (I have 2 right now). Right now I only have autos flowerinng so I have everything in the 4x4 tent with my 2 flower and 2 veg lights. 6 in a 4x4 should hopefully pull some good results. That about 720 watts of led when you subtract fans and all that. I've read 240 blackstars pull around 133 watts each.

sounds like fun chuckd......your gonna start a war announcing the purchase of blackstars after already knowing it doesnt draw 240watts..lol

i find it interesting everyone who has a blackstar ends up purchasing more and more

Well a lot of the led brands advertise by (amount of leds) * xW chip. 80 x 3w = 240. $ per watt blackstar is still one of the cheapest. At about 120 watts each minus fans and such it cost me about $2.12 a watt for all 6 flowering models. It probably would have been cheaper if I bought them all that once. Also my latest buy I tried it off eBay and I ended up getting $20 ebay bucks back lol.. I calculated a couple other panels like GrowPanelPro and without subtracting fans they were around 3.33 a watt. I think the ISIS fx1 are the second cheapest per watt at 2.35 (not subtracting fans).

I think people buy more and more blackstars because they want to try them out first. When they work good they end up buying more. Jury is definitely still out of longevity though. They might be the cheapest per watt but who knows how long until they lose a series of lights because one goes out. There was just a GrowPanelPro on eBay that had 4 rows of lights out (sold for 237.50). Gotta suck to spend $1k on a light and have it go out. I also often see their shitty GrowPanels on ebay being dumped.

My lights work out at $4.64 per watt, im hoping the extra money spent on the different led's(best manufacturer for each colour) will be worth it. I pretty much finished my cabs today so i just now need to do a test run and then hopefully later this week i can start my first grow proper:)

hmmm idk... maybe i got them before price increase? i ordered 2 for 840 last saturday...

he originally told me 400 a piece but then said he was raising prices and increased it to 420 a piece plus free shipping...

maybe if you purchase multiple lights or if you mention "irishboy" recommended you or that you follow his journals... he seems to cut the prices a little that way also

Where do you find it for 420 shipped? Their site has it at $500.

My 395w 2011 Spectra from Grow Led Hydro cost me $1145 or about $2.89 per watt. Like you said plenty of proof that companies lights will grow so I went with them (also seemed to have a lot of good features* for the per watt price*)

** Finned heat sinks, safety system so if 1 LED dies only that LED shuts off, something about breakers I hear people comment about the lights when seeing pics of the heat sinks, LEDs running at appropriate wattage for longevity and power depending on the spectrum put off (ex: reds usually need to be run at a lower wattage than others, etc.)

With the cost per actual running watt not that differen't between Spectra and Blackstar, I decided to go with Spectra (my top 2 other choices were Kessil and Blackstar)

I have not used them yet, but I would not dismiss then either.
From what I read the right ones do wonders but are costly.

yeah they all are costly... blackstar is the most price friendly it seems... at about 1.90$ a watt

but honestly it seems any reputable name brand has proven themselves growing

there havent been enough journals to document grams per watt or many comparisons but i havent seen 1 bad led journal from a name brand company

In my opinion...
Blackstar, Isis, 357 Magnum, Hydroponics Hut, Stealth Grow, GrowLedHydro all have proven themselves in my eyes or at least in the journals i have seen...
glad to see so many quality products as the competition will force better and cheaper products

I think it's funny that so many of these lights seem to share the same pieces. I can't think of any offhand right now because they all just seem to blur together. I know I've seen a quite few that seem to share the same outer case. That always makes me wonder what else is the same..

been saying that for a while now......i cant think of any other product that comes from so called different manufacturers that all have the same design

imagine if the only difference between a honda civic and a toyota corolla was the emblem and the color.............but oh well, we're not that smart anyway

Yeah, shot with a camera phone, all I can use to get all of them in the shot. Too early to tell the sex on the Kush plant though. I'm watching it carefully.

The case design is certainly identical for many manufacturers. I'm guessing the mass produced cases are very cheap and for the manufacturers it's about making a buck. What they choose to put inside those cases can certainly make a massive difference in performance but how to tell what's good and what's not is freaking difficult with all the claims and advertizing BS. Thats where journals really help.
