Unions can be good or bad. They improve pay and working conditions, but their demands sometimes exceed what a business can give to their employees and still remain viable. Honest answer. See above for dishonest answer.
If management were fair, if management were reasonable, if management were ethical, there would be no unions. Unions are a construct of bad management and nothing more.

Management for MOST big corporations work for the shareholders of the Stock. Shareholders want dividends, profits, more profits and more profits so that their investment grows. That is how 401Ks work. Did you not want people to have 401K's? Would you rather people work all their life and have nothing in the end?

Most people don't realize that stock benefits the common worker. I don't think most own stock or have a 401k. What is the point, we have social security, right? :) The thing that people in the left field don't get is that while businesses do need some restrictions on their actions, so does the government. Whether the government controls everything, or some huge umbrella corporation type business controls everything you end up with the same problem - being someones bitch. At least businesses are somewhat competent/efficient usually.

Where management is fair, unions have a difficult time getting in. Unions are NOT a a construct of bad management, they corrupt a company with compromise, just like the government does.

LOL! Go stick your head back in the sand. Some of us have been predicting this since the first talk of Obamacare. Nobody wanted to hear it and I was scoffed at. Just like you probably think that the quality of doctors will stay the same and not go down. Yep, keep your head in the sand...
Is it the same when they say that a company can't just dump toxic waste into the local water supply? Now the damned EPA is regulating the Freedom and it will cost them more? What about the human cost? Walmart being the obvious scapegoat which encourages their employees to seek government assistance and apply for food-stamps and other government entitlements? Isn't that just as bad since we are now being forced to subsidize their corporation and pay for their employees healthcare?

Why would a huge company like that, with unskilled labour offer any more than the absolute legal minimum?

Employment is made as a result of a company making a profit, however profits are not dependent on making employment.

In short, companies are there to make money for their owners and make jobs as a by-product, they're not there for any other reason.

Individual performance-pay can motivate employees to work harder. Unfortunately, most unions dislike performance pay. Unions want to “negotiate contracts that create a uniform, fair process for granting wage increases.” So everyone gets the same amount — no matter how hard they work. Unions are dying the decline is obvious. What is it down to 7% now in the private sector? You can't pay 50grand to twinkie stuffer and compete, it just isn't going to happen. RIP Unions

Sure you can when a single twinkie stuffer makes 50 million in product a year

Which is why they should pay a tax for draining our social resources, or pay a living wage.

I know of a LTL trucking company that pays employees 5% of profits each month. Very anti Union. For good reason, you can do well when the company does well. The down side if there were no profits, was no bonus but also a nasty letter saying how irresponsible everyone was for slacking off, damaging equipment (self insured) ect. They have been in business over 70 years, and recently expanded the operation by 60%. Located in a very small town, where 10% of the residents work for the company in one way or another, the community pride shows with well groomed lawns. On the other hand all the safety personnel where retired State Patrol that still had a way of digging into personal business of employees, if one was having marriage or money problems they would be overlooked for when it came time for advancement.

How responsible would the company be if there were no unions in existance?

If unions didn't exist and you owned a company would you automatically fuck people over? You obviously never will tho, you can't even paint your house until the city gets involved.

Thats a good question, The business was started by a dairy farmer that sold his milk 125 miles away, and started delivering goods on the way there and back. So the old man was a working man with values and knows what is needed for a man to make a living, and living near and around your employees and can see the impact his business has on the town. If he sells out, the town will suffer. The new owner would have no "skin" in the community and would not be able to justify the high wage.

Would you paint your house, if you have the intentions and the permits to cover it with vinyl siding? BTW when they sent the notice to paint the house. It was last october. I took the dog out for a walk this morning and it's fucking snowing. Know any low temperature house paints?

And since you are tweaking me.
They didnt send notice to paint the whole house. We did that on our own. They wanted a 4 foot section of trim up near the roof peak painted.

vinyl siding suck donkey balls.

unless it's done flawlessly all you get is rot, drafts and chunks of the vinyl blowing off in the breeze, and its always the bits right under the eaves. plus for like 5 years, every summer your whole house will smell like new jersey landfill, or a smouldering dildo.

Before I was a machinist, I built houses, did roofing and siding and windows. So when I do it Just like I replaced all my windows. it will be professionally done. By me

As for drafts. My house is almost a 100 years old. A layer of asbestos siding is coming off and the layer of wood siding is coming off then the whole house gets wrapped in Tyvek

And no Kynes vinyl siding does not smell and it is better than steel or aluminum
