RIP, Jerry

Any good Deadhead stories out there?

Here's two of mine both from the 90's (if you can believe that):
1. Me, my semi-hippie chick wife (she just told me her legs were hairy), and my good buddy from NorCal were at Soldier's Field (Chicago) down on the 'floor.' Just before the GD came out, the 4 guys (18-19 yrs. old) behind us started freaking out. I asked what the problem was and they replied that they couldn't handle what was happening. I asked what they had done. Reply: 4 or 5 because the first two didn't seem to do anything. My reply to them was that we were all 'that way.' Long story short, I talked to them almost the entire first set and half of the second until they felt 'comfortable.' My wife was pissed (it was starting to bum her out), but it was one of the funnest times at a GD show ever.

2. This actually takes in the last two GD shows played. A Saturday & Sunday at Soldier's field, Jury 1995.
Saturday night: I took my 14 & 10 yr olds with me and buddy from NorCal. The talk to the 14 yr old and his fried was : You're on your own, don't do anything stupid, and don't try anything you may regret, That was 4 pm. In the parking lot, the circus was in full play. Their tickets were across the field from me and we wouldn't see each other till about 12pm. My youngest son and buddy were in stadium sitting and talking to everyone around. E was in the air. A head next to my son was rapping away and having a grate time with him. I was rapping to two Straight hippie chicks in front of me. Things were grate until the head next to my son lit one up. My son got real quiet and said he wasn't having a good time. I asked what the problem was and he said the guy was smoking MJ. I asked him how could you like him so much one minute, and not like him the next minute because he smoked MJ. He's the same person and he didn't do anything to you to harm or hurt you. He lightened up.

2. Sunday night: a hippie chick danced the entire show backed up to me rubbing it for all it was worth. My two buddies talked about it for the whole ride home. Lucky for me, my semi-hippie chick wife refused to go after the last GD show fiasco, she didn't have to witness it.

Fast forward: My two sons never really became "deadheads" (that's dad's thing) but they sure like the 'circus."

Thank you Jerry for the grate times, all the way back to 1969. I know you're playing in that angel band now.

I wanna play...Here are a couple I remember

Me and a group of my friends used to travel from la to the bay every year for the week long (I think it was a week, hard to remember as this was some 20 years ago) party in oakland leading up to the annual New Years show.. Ive been to my share of dead shows and the new years shows were always a treat. Anyhow, me and lucy were very close an frequent friends back then and one of the nights I was told that there was a tunnel that lead from the baseball park (right next to the colliseum) to the colliseum. So I spread the news in hope that I could get a group of people to see if this was true.. I got a few peeps together and we jumped the fence to the ballpark (the A's play there). Like I said, Lucy was with me (and all of us I assume) because we proceeded to play imaginary baseball on the field. Kinda forgot about the tunnel for a second.. next thing u kow there are gaurds on golf carts chasing us...Didnt get caught but have a knarly scar on my inner thigh where I got caught on the barbed wire while getting awayyyy

another...

Summer of somethin. Dead was playin in Las Vegas (UNLV I believe)> If I remeber correct, Santana opened. Me and my 2 friends had plans to go together. Car broke down while still in our city (Venice). Friend who owned the car stayed with the car. Me and my friend Silver walked to the beach, went to hippy hill and found some heads. The were of course going to the show and happen to be on a school bus and offered to let us join... Killer voyage, awesome heads from some pretty deep family culture. The shows were amazing. Saw so many friends from home and never thought to ask for a ride back since the ride there was so kick ass......anyhow Come to find out the heads I got a ride with were continuing on touring with Jerry and the boys... WE NEVER EVEN asked where they were going next cuz we were so in the "now" that we didnt think of it... So, me and my buddy Silver, no money tons of paper to entertain us walking through a casino. Looking in the chutes of the slot machines for a stray coin... End up gettin enough somehow for a buffet. Got a piece of cardboard and pen from a worker..."LA OR BUST"... we went out to the strip and in 20 minutes a guy and his girl stop. They were going to Santa Monica which is only 1 city over from Venice...BUT THEY WERE WARF RATS and we were flyin with Lucy with NO PLANS OF LANDING ANY TIME SOON..ya, that was an interesting ride...

hahaha...this is fun

I got more but gotta run...maybe I can pop back in

RIP Brother Jerry

In the late 80's I spent the better part of a year training in the foothills of Alabama. My very first trip to Atlanta, Georgia to visit friends was unknowingly a Dead Head weekend. It took me years to get over my skewed view of that city :eyesmoke:

I miss going to dead shows.
Every trip was a journey.

I remember the first time I heard this song and didnt really like it.
Then it grew on me.

HAHA..ghost town where no cop shows his face after dark... Yu lived in a real nice area... I also lived in ghost town, sunset and 5th real nice area..HAHA. my first job ever was flying stunt kites on Venice as an advertisement for the stunt kite shop that was right on the boradwalk. I complained about waking up so early to have to go to work. Now I would consider that a vacation, wish I could go back and smack the young me in the head.

Living and growing up in the area makes Detroit look like a playground....

I was still finishing my education while very good friends decided to follow the Dead . They drifted for a few years in between shows and rainbow gatherings .. Every now and then they would come back home to visit us domestics but most of there down time was spent in Cali with others who gathered for Jerry Garcia Band shows . Luckily they would run out of money now and then and promise pages of dosage for western union favors . Call it a hippy trade as often the paper sent was worth ten fold the paper money exchanged in favor . The LSD that they sent us was out of this world and clean as a whistle too .

I never got to go on tour due to my schooling and lifes ups and downs but with that said I felt connected !! RIP Jerry

Sorry that this thread became hallucinogen infused but with the dead, that comes hand in hand unless you are a wharf rat....at least in the circles I ran in. Seems it was just part of the normal regimen....Im sure Jerry approves

The prices thread turned to hallucinogens as well. It is summertime, in the land of the almost free.

perhaps its a sign that many in the area are in need of system overload flush and cleanse. Even when the journey was filled with madness I came out felling cleaner on the other side.

The "madness" was actually the desired outcome for about 7 months as I really was doing a lot of self inventory and it helped me sort through some stuff...
