I have a grow area of roughly 10sq ft (3sq m) and 7ft height. I'm looking to grow 4 plants in this area. Could anyone recommend the required wattage I would need? Any grow lights in particular known that would be suitable for this space?

Only flowering in this room, so will I need specific "bloom" spectrum?

Hey every one I've been looking at changing my cfl to LED, i was considering going hps (the most well tested, recommended for flowering) but heat issues made that impossible, unless i wanted to also get a good vent system which at the end would likely cost me between 300-400 for the fan, ballast and lighting fixture. seeing how my grow is in a closet (2ft x 3ft x 6ft) the set up for an hps would create a lot of clutter and possible not solve my heat issue. any way looking for a good LED light for my grow thinking 2-3 plants in a DWC system... (unless any one else can point me in the direction of a cheap DIY hydro system that works better). I have a list of LED lights I found on other sites and from this forum that people were talking about or recommended. I'll dig it up and post it.

African D how big do you want to grow those plants and how much do you want to pull from them? 5 foot trees can be expensive in LED land.

You will want a bloom spectrum, many manufacturers have those models so it's more what manufacturer you go with that will dictate spectrum, unless you want to go custom and you'll get a boatload of answers there, (but not from me ;)). Wattage is how much it costs to run a system/panel and the figure you want is only good for what model of panel you choose. So a 150 watt panel from company A can have the same growing power as a 300 watt panel from company B. So if I say 600 watts, 4 panels (600) from company A is overkill, when 2 panels (300) would do the same thing as 2 panels (600) from B. See? You can't really think in watts with LEDs. You need more info than just watts basically. Good Luck.
 
Thank you for the quick reply FranJan! I'd sure love to grow some 5ft trees, the only limiting factor being our start up capital. We have in the region of $300 for the light.

What would be the most cost effective lighting option for a room of this size? How many plants should I try to grow effectively with that sort of cash? Would it be better to look at the lumens for each spectrum LED, or is it more to do with the quality of the individual diodes (having only worked with HID bulbs before im really unsure of what to look for in quality/cost effective LEDs)

I have just about the same space as you, sir. There are a lot of options on the LED market that covers 6 sq ft (most are rectangle panels..), so you are wanting to look at the Quality of things and Warranty's

that being, if you are looking to cover the space with a single light source- I think your best options would be an SGS from A51 (proven), or the new Vipar models (brand new, unproven ground, but affordable) Stereotypical suggestions... I feel like we're all on a skipping record, but honestly, it is among just a few solid companies- for some quality panels.

I would look into reusing parts from your old set up (cfl's) Cree HAS made a bulb style LED fixture, a few people on here have started using them in their setups (Fran Jan, PefFlora), may be more cost effective in your case, best of luck brother

for my lights right now I'm thinking HTGs 240 watt led, know its not the best but from some grow journals i've looked at seems like a mid range panel and is in my price range until i can up grade. from other grows I've read it sounds like it will work for my grow area with some CLFs to supplement it.

The cree light bulbs are a 60watt equivalent, they're only rated to use 9.5 watts, more than likely 10.5w in real world. I've been replacing all the bulbs in my house as they burn out with them, they're awesome.

Hey AD, sadly 300 bucks isn't going to get you too far, especially for the size of your grow. Also 4 plants of any decent size would be difficult at best. IMO you need to start small and work your way up, otherwise you're talking 2 to 4 larger panels and quite a few extra light$ because of the plant'$ $ize. Best bet IMO is to get a Hans panel with some T5s and do a SCroG, (you could go with something from Cidly instead of Hans but I'm kinda down on most Chinese panels nowadays). SCroGGing will offer you the best way to maximize your yield with small or cheap LED panels and Han's little panel is very good for it's size and price and it and some T5s, (or some CREE Bulbs :)), will get you a good yield where you could upgrade to another 2 panels, and so on...

Quality of the diodes is of the utmost importance but there is something to be said for a good grower who knows how to use his equipment, check out sleezy1's 2xBS500 (BlackStar) journal for how to grow with less than ideal equipment. And when it comes to diodes you want to get something that uses diodes from one of the big companies, i.e. CREE, Philips, Osram, Nichia, unless the company selling the panel has an established track record and a generous return policy. Stick to companies that you can identify their diodes/LEDs, quality of diode really does make your LED grow a bit easier. And better yielding! Good Luck AD.

I have Kessils and love 'em. I have 4 H350 magentas on a spectral spinner and two diy units right now for veg of royal blue and white. The spinner is really a great addition to these small multiple units and provides great coverage. The plants look fantastic - structure, color, everything. I'll be flopping to bloom soon and changing the diys to deep red. This will be my first grow with the diy units and a lot of deep red during flower. Some folks like deep red and some don't so I'm going to find out for myself My first grow with Kessils went well too and I grew some great Purple Urkle - decent yield, great quality. I think that they are a good bargain at growershouse.com too. The build quality on the Kessils is the best for any commercial fixture that I've seen....now I'm not saying I've seen 'em all by any means but these are well manufactured and several of those named above are NOT well built and in fact are known to fail regularly.
 
I own 2 Kessils, 1 H150 Purple, 1 H350 Magenta. Honestly I think the Purple one outperforms the Magenta.
Just my opinion. I love em both, and you're right the $90 for a Kessil is hard to turn down. If I wasn't unemployed
I would have already gotten 3 or 4 more :)
 
I was looking to get a growblu 180x3 if anyone has any comments or rebuts I would love to hear feed back because so far all I hear is good things about this company and I am awaiting an email back from them regarding their methods and about their return and warranty policy trying to do some homework before I make the switch from hid lighting early on in my growing career

Needs to have mixed spectrum.
Selling all my HPSs and CFLs to pay for it.

Due to new lease addendum I need to go stealth. I have space..need light. HPS way too hot for space.

200 bucks or so.
 
hey guys, I have been thinking of a way to supplement my 400wMH when it comes time to flowering, i dont have the space for cfl tubing and and ballast with hps is also a space and electricity issue. basically, im looking for red spectrum for 5 plants, grow space is about L 1.5m X W 0.6m X H 2.5m. nothing hectic, just want some red for flowering :)

For $200 bucks the may be the only choice http://www.bsled.com/led-grow-light/h158d-140w.html it should do well in a 2x2, tell them you want a "sample/tester" panel and they should ship it for around two bills......good luck

that looks amazing however it is prohibitively expensive, especially since i live in south africa lol :/ was thinking of building my own from components since im slightly knowledgeable in electronics :) any1 got a quick link to a schematic? i assume they are linked in parallel?
