If "Organic" Includes Bottled Ferts, What Is Plain 'Ol Soil Called?

And I'm sure they're great for the plant. I mean that. You can certainly have top quality materials ground and mixed together in a bottle.

I just think it's mighty simple to mix a soil with these materials already sequestered into the soil humus is my point. And for a lot less.

I just like to point out it can get easier and a lot cheaper. Not a thing wrong with the products you mentioned.

i get it lol. I personally didnt buy them. (neptunes is hella expensive, powdered stuff being slightly cheaper) I got a 4oz sample bottle of the hydrolyzed fish and it was pretty good stuff. If i ever do another grow it will be with a good soil mix.

I would love that recipe. And I hate to make it difficult but if possible describe what each item is for and why they are used. Only because if I'm every to get a handle on this I need to understand the why not just the how

By the way Rrog, I've noticed that there are a million and one ways to grow. Some very fundamentaly sound, some a little odd. But I think what matters the most is the attitude of the community and whether everyone sees eye to eye shouldn't matter. It should be just that. A community. And you have an awesome attitude. If we had more people as willing to help even newbs asking the same question for the millionth time we'd have one hell of a forum. Mad props man. Keep that essence cause growing should be a fun and stress relieving and beautiful thing. Thanks

It's all a learning experience man, and what you take from it is up to you. But when you see massive green plants by just adding water, you mite be convinced you mixed your soil right.

Rrog - Do you know how i could make a rooting solution, to take some clones?

Crab Pot

I tried out sideways modified supersoil mix for my first run. The tastiest, most potent herb that I've personally experienced with a surprisingly good yield. But, I want to try this recipe. It would be great not to have to use bagged soils and guanos. I flower in a 4x4 tent. What should I use for pots? One or two large smart pots?

I love the fabric pots. Absolutely. Larger pots work better for ROLS if you can accommodate. Like 10-15 gallon is awesome.

Wow Rrog... thanks for posting all of those links! I'll get everything I don't already have for the recipe and get it mixed up right away.

Rrog

Well, it should be re-amended as you go, so not really a water-only. At least the ROLS isn't. It's recycled.

Rrog, if I may ......

I found a post by FunTimes very helpful in wrapping my head around building a well balanced soil. This info was posted by FunTimes, but is originally from Coot.

Base: Pretty simple
1 part- sphagum peat moss
1 part- compost/vermicompost (making your own is best)
1 part aeration (pumice, lava rock, perlite, vermiculite, etc). Diversity is good. I even used some old hydroton that I had laying around from my hydro days.

The amendments that are added to the base are broken down in to 3 category's.

Food Mix
Fix-it Mix
Mineral Mix

Food Mix:
Add 2 cups of the following per cubic feet of base. Alfalafa meal, flax seed meal, bone meal, blood meal, fish meal, canola meal, soybean meal, cotton seed meal, etc. It should be pointed out that cottonseed meal is derived from one of the heaviest chemically treated crops so keep that in mind. Also blood meal and bone meal come from a pretty unethical industry, so depending on your idea of "organics", these items may not meet your criteria. Note: This is two cups per cf total of whatever you choose to use.... not two cups per cf of each ingredient. Again, diversity is good.

Fix-it Mix:
You will add 1.5 cups of the following per cubic feet of base. Kelp meal, Neem seed meal, Karanja seed meal, and crab shell meal. I feel that kelp meal, neem seed meal and crab shell meal are essential. Karanja seed meal can be used in place of neem seed meal if you can source it locally.

Mineral Mix:
You will add 1 cup of the following per cubic feet of base. Greensand, Azomite, soft rock phosphate, oyster shell powder, gypsum.

Rock dusts are added in addition to the above ingredients at 2-3 cups per cf of base.

If you can source any of the above ingredients locally, go with those. A lot of this stuff can be picked up at feed stores, garden centers, rock supply companies, etc. You will find better prices that way, avoid shipping costs, and support a local business. If you have a couple other buddies on board with this, you can save quite a bit of money buying larger bags of stuff and splitting it amongst a few growers.

Mix all of your ingredients together (I use a large tarp). Wet this mix down with an aerated compost tea using approximately a half gallon of ACT per cf of soil, and place in to a rubbermaid bin (with aeration holes drilled in to the lid) or other large, breathable container and let sit for AT LEAST 30 days. I shoot for 45-60 days before sticking a cut in there. I also typically dump my mix back out on to a tarp 3-5 days after mixing it to ensure that I have even moisture, and things aren't turning anaerobic on me.

Sorry for the hijack Rrog, but for whatever reason breaking the ammendments down in to categorys seemed to help me figure out a good recipe to go with, and it also helped me understand what each input is bringing to the mix.

It's all good! I like the idea of dividing up the materials by function. Lends a little logic behind the method.

In my opinion organics is still organics. Don't let the bottle heads steal our good name! Lets just start calling what they are doing "almost organic with the exception that they use processed shit from bottles growing"! That'll teach em!
