I have a few buckets of each, the roks are kinda pricey at about 60 bux per 1.5 cubic feet if I remember right. but at least they don't roll all over the place.

Hydroton is being discontinued? not sure why they would do that since its one of the numbe rone mediums for hydroponic growing out there...

My last bag of hydroton read that it was made in Germany, which is a shame since the kiln fired aggregate plants in the US are suffering these days.

I just switched to the Dutch produced Gold Label Hydro Pebbles which are basically the same thing with exception to a couple items. They guarantee that no heavy metals are leached into their products. Hytroton wont say this. They are also more irregular in shape so they dont slide and shift around near as much. Since I feel the LECA / Weed Barrier construction is superior to the False Bottom method, this is important to me. The large bag was also less expensive than Hydroton. This brand can be found at most hydroponics supply stores.
found this on another thread. looks like Hydroton the brand may be being discontinued but there will be other mediums that are the same with a different label on the bag

Its all gone. No more left (at least this is what the guy who owns the Hydro store told me). Its being replaced with something similar.

theres alot of other alternatives, like hydrocorn and a few bigger companies make similar mediums.

if you have the coin dyna rok II by dynagro. the silica can't hurt.
I checked it out and yes it is quite pricey. dbkick you are right on the money on prices. I was hoping to get info on what medium you all are using and why. I am new to hydroponics so any any and all advice is always welcomed.

Wow, my mind is blown. Never really saw why people liked it - it hard to clean and hard to throw out, expensive as hell, needs washed out of the bag, ect.

I think peat moss / perlite is a great, overlooked medium. If you put it in a reusable shopping bag, you can put it in a net pot, and no dirt will get out - it's really similar to coir, except you can buy it at Home Depot instead of the hydro store.

The new stuff thats being sold at my hydro stores is fine. It seems more power before the wash, but I seem to be having less ph swing at the beginning of a new run, almost no swing, compared to having to knock it down twice a day at first. I'm actually happy about this for now.

straight perlite is awesome. Hydroton is the dirtiest shit ever. Just need to wet down the perlite to keep the dust down when you are transplanting. Its so cheap you can just toss it each run. fuck cleaning a grow medium.

Yeah, I actually made this thread months ago...

But there are already severay expanded clay substrates...I'm trying hydroclay right now, and you know what? It's just like hydroton...I'm gonna try hydrocorn next, and you know what I heard about it? I heard it's just like hydroton. I picked up a 50l bag of hydroclay for 27 bucks...that's cheaper than I used to get my hydroton for. I thought it was gonna be MORE expensive, not cheaper...delightful surprise.

Oh, and for anyone who hates rinsing new bags of hydroton...The stuff I'm using, Hydroclay, needs MINIMAL rinsing by comparison to hydroton when it's new.

I have given some thought to just using perlite. I have seen other posts here and other sites about using chunky perlite. The perlite at my local stores I are too small to use except in soil. Never tried peat moss so I have no clue as to its benefits or problems with using it. I am the type to research everything so I'll give it a try to see for myself. I will keep in mind everything said here as the information here seems to be much better than anywhere else. So thanks for the replies. Oh by the way I apologize for starting a thread that was already posted before.

Now peat moss is a different story.
People PLEASE stop buying it.
Why would anyone stop buying it? It's cheap, easy to find, and if you dump it in your yard, it doesn't make it obvious you were growing pot (huge pain in the ass to get rid of rockwool and hydroton - archeologists will be finding that shit) Its also really easy to bounce between soil and hydro - coir seems to drain too fast to keep manually watered.

Because peat moss is a nonrenewable resource......I can not judge as I used to buy pro-mix by the pallet.....

peat moss is terrible in hydro because its organic id disregard last comment anything non-organic is good for hydro just requires different feeding schedules the good thing about hydroton "clay Pellets" is that you can feed a lot more than other mediums, however it is very heavy and a pain.
