holding it in

i get my info from hightimes so take it for what it's worth. but they say that you don't need to hold in your smoke. you inhale then exhale. like a cigarette. i am one to hold it until i turn blue. apparently all i'm doing is allowing more bad things such as tar to stick to my lungs. but if more tar sticks wouldn't more thc stick also? any thoughts or comments?

i dunno, but it makes me cough when i hold it in...which cuts off oxygen to the brain which makes me feel higher i think

Well a solution to this would be getting a vaporizer, since that way you only breathe in the good stuff so you can hold it in longer without worrying about tar. but if I'd have to take an opinion I'd say that I agree with FDD if ya hold in longer I do believe that more THC is absorbed along with the bad stuff.

yes i have heard that holding it in past about 5 seconds or so, doesnt do anything, and that your lungs take what they are going to in the first 5 seconds. i sometimes exhale a little and then inhale again quicklly.

actually wouldn't it block more thc absorbtion... if you lungs were all full o' tar? and i think there was a study saying the in the first second 98% of the thc is absorbed... i'm experimenting right now V peace

I would think High Times would know but sort of seems like you are defeating the purpose if you don't hold it in. But I bow down to the experts almighty High Times.

I've been wrong all these years, son of a bitch.

Burning or vaporizing the cannabis and inhaling the smoke into the lungs is the fastest route to the blood stream. Conventional wisdom is that holding in the smoke increases the effects felt. Recent research shows the opposite; it causes more harm to the lungs without increasing the amount of THC absorbed. Studies done in Australia indicate that 95% of the THC in cannabis is absorbed in the first few seconds of inhaling. Holding in the smoke longer just allows more tar and other noxious chemicals to be absorbed. Take small, shallow puffs rather than deep inhalations. Irritation of the throat and lungs is one of the most obvious adverse effects to the marijuana smoker as is the inevitable cough upon inhaling. The cough is the body's reaction to the irritation of the numerous constituents of the smoke. Prolonged and repeated exposure to these irritants can lower resistance to, and aggravate infections from viruses, bacteria, or fungi. The lesser coughing, the safer the smoke. The fewer puffs the better; the more potent the cannabis used is the fewer puffs required. For these reasons, it is preferable to use only the more potent flower tops, or high grade hash for smoking use.
Despite the obvious dangers of inhaling hot smoke, there is evidence that in some cases (ie. Asthma) smoking could be a beneficial medical use of cannabis. Another advantage of smoking is that it allows the user to control their dosage better as the effects are almost immediate, unlike when eating, or using THC in pill or spray form. In general however, smoking is not the best way to take cannabis, especially for pain, being a less efficient use of the herb than eating. However, many medical users find they appreciate the immediate and pleasurable effects of smoking cannabis and the harm of smoking can be reduced in various ways. One alternative to inhaling smoke is to release the THC through Vaporization; inhaling vapor rather than smoke, see vaporization.

My buddies and I used to 'zero' the hits by holding them in for 30+ seconds, then you don't blow any smoke out, I should've realized you're just keeping more tar in, I guess it's just the lack of oxygen that makes you feel a little higher on exhale.

Not challenging the theory this thread is devoted to, but, I wonder if one would get drunk from gargling Jack Daniels and not swallowing?

I have a volcano and if you have not used a vap before it will make you cough...Vap's do take some time to get used to..(but well worth it)
What ever you do dont waste your money on a vapair..I have one of thoes too and it sucks.
I have had several over the years and if you can handle the steep price the volcano is def the way to go..It will blow you away even with good old dirt weed..

Ever taken a gravity-hit not from a gravity bong. But take a big hit stand up holding it in for a few moments and then you get really light headed I've even had friends black out:mrgreen:

It's not how long you hold the smoke in but how deeply you inhale. I got my info' from some drug awareness leaflets a drug counsellor gave to a friend of mine. My country is great.

It's actually "....light the bong....", but, fuck yeah, Mary is such a good song. Brad was such a bad boy.

Though, I must admit, I was wrong as well. I've always advocated holding in the hit. I remember in school we'd smoke in the back of class and just hold it in until there was no smoke to exhale. No more holding it in for me....
