Growing with Guns... What is your take on it.

So a couple weeks ago I got robbed while I was out of town. My mom had cancer and I spent a month with her taking care of her till she died. I had a friend who is also a caregiver staying at my house watching over everything while I was out of state. I know that is not legal but I was not going to not be by my moms side. Anyways about 2 days after my mom died I get a call from another friend saying my friend who was staying at my house got held up by gunpoint. They took his phone and proceeded to trash my house looking for money and weed. I had my other caregiver friend who was not staying at my house take care of my patients for me since I could not do so and did not have any cash or finished product at my house. They ended up taking unfinished plants and some lights and probably a 1000$ worth of change that I kept in a 10 gal jar. There were 4 of them and all in all they probably got 6-7 grand worth of various stuff which they maybe got 4 grand out of. What happened was somebody knocked at my front door and my friend didn't think to look to see who it was and opened the door to a gun in his face. Now I didn't have him call the cops because I wasn't in town and wasn't allowed to have anybody watching over my plants anyway. I am not sure who robbed me but I do have an ex roommate who is an alcoholic and has stolen small amounts from me before so it could be him or someone he talked too, it could also be one my patients showing off there card and somebody taking a look at the address on the back but there is no way to really know. I don't deal with shady people at all and all my patients and friends have never given me a reason not to trust them. I beefed up my security put in a good camera system and steel doors with kick in plates around the frame and bars on my windows.

Now here is my question, I have never owned a gun because for years I grew illegally in a different state and nobody knew where I lived and I knew if I got busted growing I would have a mandatory sentence if the cops ever came by and I had a gun. I now would like to own a gun because I am legal here but I worry about calling the cops on someone trying to rob me and having them come by and busting me for a gun because as I understand it I am still not allowed to own one even though I can legally grow here. Is this correct? Am I not allowed to own a gun and grow at the same time? Do they enforce this? Most people I know who grow own guns but either don't care that they could get 2 years for each gun they have or don't think the cops are going to bust them for the guns because they are growing legally. I tend to not trust cops as they have tried a few times in the past to screw me over.

Any thoughts on any of this would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't go the gun route personally, there is a federal issue with narcotics and firearms together I went thru an issue in 2009 where I was raided , the grow was legal and all checked out the shotgun got me a charge though, which I eventually got dismissed, but as of now that's a bad idea in my opinion, I personally have a wide array of swords, knives and an assortment of medieval weapons, as well as a good camera and security system, and 2 Rottweiler's but no guns, sounds like an inside job to me Nick, might want to look at your circle a bit, also ive been hearing of rippers using F.L.I.R cameras to locate grows.

Yeah id get some tough doors. Had to upgrade our security because of an attempt and we got some nice solid doors from home depot for 75 bucks each on sale from 125.

Solid ones too. We have guns, but had them before we were established where we are. Its one of those things where if you have it secure and out of main reach but easily accessible for you, youll be fine because there shouldnt be cops rushin in on you.

Like stated above. Better to be alive/safe from people who are going to kill you than in some legal trouble with people you can talk to and potentially work it out with.

Everybody in my inside circle knows about growing because they grow and these guys obliviously didn't I had 600$ air cooled CO2 generator still in box with the price tag on it also the CO2 controller right on top of that with a 300$ price tag on it that they seemed to have missed. They took some of my hoods but not my lumatek ballasts. I had a jar of RSO that easily had 3 oz in it sitting on my desk and they didn't take that but they took my cheap ass dvd player that was right next to it. If anybody in my inner circle was knowingly involved I would be in a lot worse shape. These guys didn't have a clue they ripped up vegging plants before they realized I actually had a flower room in my basement. They were running down the street with plants and hoods etc. If it was anybody who had been to my house before they would have come to the back door because then they would have been less likely to be seen by the neighbors....

The last time I checked on the ATF website when I was going to build an AR 80% lower a few months ago. You cannot have been addicted to any controlled substance ever! period. And the way the feds see it you are addicted to marijuana and manufacturing a controlled substance. My tip to you is if you do decide you need a firearm think about if you are capable of shooting someone or possibly shooting someone shooting back at you. If I was you I would quit growing at your location and move out of town and defiantly break any connections you think may have been involved.

Sorry to hear about your mom Nick. That's a tough loss. Also sucks to hear about the break in. Thieving mo-fos are some of the lowest life forms.

As far as the guns go I'm pretty sure it's frowned upon when growing in your house. That's an individual decision that you're gonna have to make though. I've opted not to have them because of the legal issue and also because I have kids. But I completely understand why people have them.

Look at it like this. You didn't shoot anyone (didn't have a gun) but what IF you DID? You would be in prison. So it's a bad spot the laws have put us in.

A law abiding medical grower looses their ability to defend themselves.

Laws will be changing but for now its a no go legally.

You have to decide if going to prison is an acceptable penalty for having to use a gun to protect yourself and your family.

Sorry to hear about your mom. I dread the day I have to deal with what your going through.

Regarding the firearm, probably not a good idea at all. I don't know your states law about resident to resident transfers or other other non FFL routes but that seems the only way to obtain a firearm without committing a felony. I could be very wrong about that.

What I do know is that any purchase through a licensed firearm dealer will require an ATF form 4473. http://www.atf.gov/files/forms/download/atf-f-4473-1.pdf
If you look at section 11.e you're pretty much disqualified. If you had to use the weapon then it's a possible felony charge with a 5 year term for knowingly falsifying the form.

I would recommend a dog, one that would die for you. I have a friend that has a business that gets every local hood salivating just thinking about robbing it. He has one of these on the premises 24/7 and he's a great deterrent.

I love dogs and have zero issues getting one for protection. I have a dog now but she is a Boston Terrier and although she thinks she is a killer when she gets a hold a toy she really wouldn't harm a fly.

i have a 135 pound mastiff and was just outside letting him take a poop on the front lawn.

some dude came riding down the sidewalk on a bicycle, suddenly noticed the dog in the yard and tried to swerve out of the way franticallly and fell over.

i laughed. the dog just watched.

If you get a gun you better be able to use it. If not get dogs and teach them to attack.

Either way you're screwed if the cops get involved.

Man...talk about feeling like a sitting duck. If your place has been compromised...leave! If you have no way of protecting yourself, how can you feel at ease? Fucked up situation. If you can legally own a gun shut down the grow and pick up a nice comfy AR...that's all the insurance you'll need. Truth is even if you no longer grow there...some assholes are out there talking up a storm. Do the smart thing.

i still worry about robberies, you can smell my house for 100 feet in every direction at harvest time. having seen this dog get angry though, i have almost no concern for my life.

what i do worry about is the cops shooting my dog if they raid me. i'm even thinking of putting a note on the door asking them to please not shoot him if they're here to bust me. same goes for rippers who may try to poison or shoot the guy.
