I use to work maintenance for a large apartment complex in the US. Whenever we were scheduled to do routine maintenance, the office would post a notice on all bulletin boards and at every apartment. Even with weeks of prior notice, tenants would not be prepared for it. They are going to run into people sleeping, naked and many other embarrassing situations for both parties involved. when this happens the natural reaction is to quickly do whatever it is that you are there to do and leave. We knew people had their stashes, and other things within the apartment, but we were not there to act as the police. I think the trash can idea, disguised to look like a nightstand, laundry basket or something similar would be sufficient. The larger the complex the more they have to accomplish and will hasten their departing your apartment. Make sure your place is clean and in good repair, be the model tenant. Their are several ways to deal with the odor even if on a temporary basis, which have already been suggested in this thread.
Secondly, it seems the majority of your paranoia stems from your arrest warrant. Whatever it is for must be minor or they would have come to your job, or tracked your girlfriend to find you. You should consider dealing with it and put it behind you, as it is inevitable that is going to happen one way or another anyhow.
Just my two cents, hope this helps in your decision making, and best of luck to you.
