I haven't fished much since moving back to California from Montana. I fished ALL OF THE TIME in Montana.

On Monday I went for a walk along the American River between Sunrise and the Nimbus hatchery and there were dying salmon along the banks. I hope that I can get some fishing sometime soon but find that I am more inspired when I have someone to fish with.

It needs to be bigger if I am going to impress anyone. Like at least 25% bigger. I am sure you can understand.

OH dude.
If you wanna have serious fun ... do some deep sea Salmon fishing.
If you love fishing; getting a 40lb salmon on line, in deep water will ALMOST CERTAINLY cause an erection.
Take a party boat out of San Francisco, or Eureka ... when they biting ... you'll be back on dock by noon with two fish that may top out at 60 lbs total.
You also might have blisters on your hands from fighting them.

bro lets do a salmon trip this summer....Hella fun. Take a boat out of Berkeley. I go several times a year. I'll hit you up the next time we are going. Hell if we can get 10 or 11 people to go we can charter the whole boat for a day. We have done a couple of RIU salmon trips in the past. I like the El Dorado out of berkeley because the skipper turns a blind eye to smoking weed on deck....

I am serious as a heart attack, if you like fishing ... hook into one that is a fair fight. And, with salmon, it is.
They have a very soft mouth, and the state doesnt allow you to use a barbed hook. If you don't do it right, he can get off and live a long life ... and even experienced fisherpersons lose em. It is truly a fair fight. And winning is a pride pumping experience.
Keep the rod tip up, keep the tension tight, set the drag to medium ... let em run when they wanna ... when they sound, point the tip of the rod at em ... watch em jump and shake .. it truly IS a fight to the death, and the fish can win.
And if he does, give a salute and bait up ...

Definitely DO IT before you die.

PS to say: Look at those pix's above my post. Nice fish, but not uncommon. My wife caught a 46 pounder on a boat with 32 men on it. She won 'first fish' AND 'biggest fish' pot and pissed off a bunch of puffed up men. LMAO. She also complained about blisters on her hands for a week. But, when I walked offa the boat I had to hold that fish up to my chest to keep the tail from draggin on the deck ... and I'm 6'1" tall. I was so proud of her that day. She fought that fish for a half hour - leaned up against me with me whispering instructions in her right ear ... a trooper; but then that's why I married her.
HER fish. Not mine.

that was my first time there. me and the wife attended the Lending tree bowl in moblie. i just had to wet a line.

the fishing bite was fairly on.

we have eating at Lamberts twice before thou......keep your head down , they have incoming rolls ...lol

Yeah we get 40lb King Salmon here in Lake Ontario too, (20-25lb is common) although the Ocean fish are likely much more powerful.
I really want to catch a salmon in open water on my centerpin, talk about you against the fish.

Actually if it was a chinook (at 40lbs it was) it will have a bony mouth. The reason many get off is they typically do not turn back when hooked and will swim straight towards the boat so the faster you reel the more likely you’ll get a good set. It is cool watching someone reel in a 30lb plus fish for the first time. As a salmon and trout guide in the big water I’ve seen it numerous times ;). Take her to Guatemala for a fishing trip and let her reel in a 100 plus sailfish.
