Dang, BF Crappie!

From the start, it was just a regular fishing trip for Lionel “Jam” Ferguson, the kind the Philadelphia, Tenn. angler routinely takes when he isn’t working. But routine or not, the Tuesday, May 15, 2018 trip ended with one of recent memory’s most viral catches, the hooking and landing of a huge black crappie from an East Tennessee pond that has been weighed in by Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) officials at 5 pounds, 7.86 ounces. “I was off of work,” said the 33-year old, who works at the Viskase plant in nearby Loudon, Tenn. “When I’m off, that’s what I do, I go fish. It’s just that this time, I caught that big old crappie.”

It’s a stunning fish for sure, one that has the potential to become both a Tennessee state record and an International Game Fish Association all-tackle world record.

What a fish, I had no idea that Crappie got that big.

Props to Mr. Ferguson.

Had a heck of a river fishing trip Memorial weekend. The first time I took my phone up, it went in the river. so, I left it on shore this trip. And this river in THAT heat! Man, I used to literally fish crack of dawn to twilight two days either with a paddle or oars in my youth, but this old man had to crank up that 55 # thrust MinKota and get himself off the water by about 5:30 pm the first day and crash! After cleaning the fish, of course! I did get out earlier and back in later on Sunday, but still just as beat down by the Sun. Sadly, that means a lack of good pics for most of the fish I caught. But I got a couple to share of a 14" smallie and a nice largemouth I had to throw back... My First two of the trip, before I ever got the bottom of the boat wet. I cleaned over a dozen Smallies and Largemouths as well as red eyes and rock bass. LOST count, actually... Father's Day fish Fry!

Fist of the trip, just barely keeper, but a fine fish, none the less...IMG_20180525_160711856_HDR.jpg

Had to put this guy back, didn't bother measuring.

That's GOT to be a record, no? Congrats to "Jam", for sure. Just amazing!

We used to rip down the lake WFO when we were fishing in a tournament and stupidly most of the time we didn’t have any PFDs on. We were in our 20s then and after seeing a little girl get killed on a side by side not wearing her seatbelt or helmet, we changed our way of thinking. If the outboard is on so are the life jackets.

Yep, and the older you get the more you see that bad shit can happen in the blink of an eye.

back in my youth, i would never wear pfd's or even seat belts, my dumb ass wouldnt even wear a helmet operating a motor bike.

it didnt take me long to start to doing all three, after getting on as a firefighter and seeing what can and does happen

No! Because im lame i know. I promise i’ll start taking pics.
I feel your pain - went out Sunday early looking for King's & Halibut, figured we would hit the Butt hole (Tee Hee) early - 30 in the box in about 2 hours (and no pic's of course). No big Momma's anyway, just chickens that averaged 15-20 lbs which is the perfect eating size, the meat is much sweeter & has a better texture as the flesh is much firmer. The Kings were absent & we couldn't find the bait balls but the Orca's put on quite a show for us & at one point we had at least a dozen all around us within 200 yds of the boat.

Not from this weekend, a big Bull we encountered last fall - his dorsal is every bit of 6 ft tall.

Right on.

On my boats, i’m the one driving, getting the shit on and down the downriggers, usually stacking. Its allot of work. When fish on, last thing i wanna do is make people pose with the fish. Fuck that shit. Gotta get the shit back out and down.

My best friend and I have a 29' custom welded aluminum landing craft that we run 4 Scotty's on. He's got a key fob he wears around his neck & can control steering with it.
He runs the back two, I run the front two & when a rod hit's we just hand it off to the nearest "guest".
Much easier than trying to teach a newb to run a rigger & then I do "mate" bleeding & boxing the fish.
It's one hell of a fishing partnership - more like Piscatoris poetry in motion.
