bertha is getting FAT!
yeah baby :hump:

so the girls are just a few inches over 3ft. they've essentially stopped vertical growth... is that normal? they really seem like they are at the distance they want to be from the light, and are just throwing all their energy into the buds... is this bs or am i on track lol

temp has stabilized at 82 deg f- i'm definitely happier with that as a daytime temp, rather than the 75 deg f it was before i started screwing with the dehumidifier and ac unit, etc... humidity is hanging in the 40s, always under 50%, sometimes closer to 40%- that should be good.

okay, here are some bud shots from today:

gimme some sugar, bertha baby

i swear this plant has dandelion somewhere way back in the family lineage...

this ones soakin' up the sidelight. drink it in mama- chug chug chug chug... oh, hee hee... here's the pic:

minnie's peak... i think she might accept a slightly longer flowering period than bertha will... bertha is starting to become a leaning tower cause the top colla is getting so much heavier.

one of minnie's fluffy mid/bottom buds... maybe i should snip it and dry it for a day or two for a sample, whaddya think? :joint:

Don't do it :) I tired a few nights ago and it was hardly worth it. I about died when the fat little bud dried to almost nothing..

okay, thanks for the input everyone, i guess i need to wait... but i want to smoke it nooooow lol

the girls looked very thirsty today, i've never seen them like i found them this morning- all the leaves were slightly drooped/curled at the ends. the last time i watered them was 10/17, so it's amazing to see how suddenly their demand for water has increased- i've tried to reduce the ff big bloom to about half strength every other watering. i mean, for god's sake, they've hardly grown upward... after looking back at my journal, i think haven't adjusted the lights up since around day 68- that's almost TWO WEEKS ago  hypothetically, it's 2-3 weeks from harvest, and i have a feeling they're just gonna keep drinking like crazy.

while i was digging around in the earlier posts of my journal, it was fascinating to see how the buds have developed over the past 40 days, and to think, how many times have i seen some of the really experienced gardeners post something like "wait 'til you see the bud growth in the last two weeks... damn i'm getting FUCKING EXCITED  (and wait 'til you see my next grow... it should be very, very cool, so be on the lookout 8)

i've noticed a good bit more sugar showing up on the leaves, so i figured it was time for some updated rs scope pics. here are some closeups of a tiny leaf bertha volunteered...

first, a shot to give you a sense of perspective:

you can see how some of the beads of fluid are starting to work their way out to the tips of the hairs... it is my guess that that is what makes the plants really start to look sugary, correct me if i'm mistaken!

here's a closer shot of the trichome furthest to the right in the last pic

and here is a shot of another area on the leaf... note the lone, slightly-cloudy bead...

okay, running out of time for this today, so i'll have to analyze minnie tomorrow... for now, that's about all there is to post. i'm gonna aim to take some updated photos of everything in a couple of days to mark the sixth week of the flowering cycle.

time to fire up my giant bowl and go to work lol...
happy saturday everyone!

Dude, this is an awesome journal. I especially love the microscope shots. I've never seen a trichome up so close before!

I'll be watching!

thanks guys! glad you both are watching, scroll down for some extreme closeup shots :joint:

btw, i stuck my nose right into bertha's top colla and took in a deep whiff... man, that was a fucking religious experience.

so when its ready they will not be clear?? they will be amber?
from what i understand, the trichomes start out clear (not recommended to harvest when clear if you like thc in your weed), then they become milky/cloudy (good for a cerebral, functional high), and last they become amber (couch-lock knockout high). I'm going to see if i can pulloff harvesting most of my buds while the trichomes are primarily milky with a touch of amber... a small portion i'm going to let go to a fuller amber.

well, the plants are doing pretty well, i think. i have experienced some minor difficulties, but i think i have dealt with the problems.

problem 1)
the first signs of nute burn (i think)...

i knew this was coming, and luckily, the pic above shows pretty much the extent of the damage, so far. i had been reducing their feed to half the usual dose of ffbb, but only on every other watering, and was giving a full dose on the other waterings... i knew it would end up being too many nutes, since the girls have needed water much more frequently lately.

so, i watered 3/4 gallons of plain h2o for both girls tonight. i think another problem with the past couple of waterings/feedings is that i have done it within the first couple hours of light, instead at the end of the 12/12 day... if it doesn't get worse than this, i'll just be glad that i got to see what this ailment looks like without killing my plants. who knows, it could also be related to heat stress, see below lol

problem 2)
curling leaves

i've been trying to figure out why their leaves have been curling... saw it the first time a couple of days ago (if you look back in the journal) and i thought it was because they were thirsty.

...and no wonder they were, the nighttime temperatures have been in the 90-95+? deg f(uck) range!!! ugh... dumbass me lol

i failed to see this until now, since i haven't watered after lights-out in a while (and was too lazy to check the temps when i set up the dehumidifier). it was about an hour and a half into darkness when i watered them tonight and found the temp at 94 deg f. the problem is the ac unit goes off with the timer, but the dehumidifier doesn't... it was set to level 7 (of 10), keeping humidity in the low 40s, but i turned the dial down until the machine turned off, setting the dial to 5.

now some pics... i screwed up in photoshop and ruined the profile shots of the girls, but here are a bunch of closeups- i think these are some of the best i've taken so far...

i snapped this pic of that low bud on minnie i was eyeballing the other day... :weed:

the trichomes looked so cloudy, that... sorry people... i just had to snip it... of course, i let it dry for like 30 minutes, and then i just couldn't stand waiting any longer and crammed it in my bowl :blsmoke:

i got a little high, maybe for about 20 minutes... it was kinda cool- definitely was a clear thinking high, and i caught myself starting to get the chucklies as it wore on, but this stuff is definitely not even close to being ready for harvest... it was a fun experiment, nonetheless! another interesting thing was the slight headache i had at the end of the high- i suppose from the nutes?? i guess that could be evidence of need to cut out nutes the last week of flowering. maybe it was just from inhaling carbon dioxide...

here's a better trichome pic... definitely a good amount of cloudy pearls, but many clear ones yet to develop! this just went into my lungs.

a couple of tongues for ya...

a fair amount of the hairs are turning red... check out the super-closeup below...

just another bud far and close shots...

a couple more random shots... if your computer ever loads these, hope you think it's worth the wait.

well, that was a looooong post lol

hey dude. first off let me say your plants look like shit.. HA :) the leaves curling downwards like that? i thought it was due to over watering mine are doing the same but I'm not worried about it. I'm getting really close to harvest. you like look like you have WEEKS to go. I must say they are looking very nice.. sure you havnt done this before?

keep doing w/e you have been.. you will be harvesting in NO time and smoking it up. cant wait as im sure you cant either.

ballbuster! lol
leaves are still a bit curled... doesn't seem like they are growing much, but i think things will be great in the end, man. gonna try to take a close look at the trichomes again soon. i don't know, if they're cloudy, and start to go amber, that's when you harvest, regardless of the amount of weeks flowering, i guess... i mean, these are bag seed, so i have no idea what the flowering time would be, but considering where the weed i found the seeds in came from (grown for commercial purposes), i wouldn't be surprised if these strains had a flowering time on the shorter side of things... we'll soon see!!

nice pics man!!
thanks my man, glad you like em.

They're starting to look pretty good. Keep us posted.
thanks, i will definitely keep posting as new things develop.

to that end, here's just a sneak peek at my next grow, which i will start a proper journal for as soon as germination begins.

...drum roll, please...

...and...

Some excellent trich' pic's.

trich's grown in humid conditions will actually have longer stalks and are not as potent, even if you were to grow exactly the same strain. They are also most likely to snap off during drying and handling etc.

thanks! that's interesting about the effects of humidity on trich development. unfortunately, it's been raining cats and dogs here, and there's water in the basement right now... so the dehumidifier is running overtime!

here are a couple current trich pics

minnie:

this is just a small sample, but looking over the whole leaf, many more of the trichomes are looking cloudy these days, but some are still clear, and i don't see any amber happening yet.

bertha:

bertha's sample pic here seems to show a few more cloudy trichs, but looking at this leaf overall showed more clear trichomes than on minnie. again, no amber yet, but more cloudy than the last set of pics.

looks like 3 more weeks. looking really good though.
thanks fdd, i'm hoping the buds will start fattening up a bit more soon... the growth has seemed to stagnate a bit recently, but then again, the plants are just over 3 ft, and they are in pots that are just over 3 gallons, so maybe that has something to do with it.

here are just a couple more pics...

group shot

bertha's peak:

bertha closeup:

i've been eyeballing these droopy/curly leaves for a little while now. i'm starting to think it's N deficiency- i hear one typically sees this late in flowering, but i'm not sure if i should try to compensate by giving more nutes, or give it a boost. maybe it's something else all together... at any rate, i'm figuring on feeding them maybe one more time, and then just plain water for the rest of the grow, but i'm not sure- any opinions on this appreciated :joint:

yes its all normal and ok its cause the plant is using up excess energy and sugars for final bud production. i would not recommend any nutes but maybe some vitamins or natural organics for about a week then plain water for 2 more weeks to flush and and then they will be primo.:blsmoke: when flushing best way is to soak the plants real good and wet and let them dry out for a few days until bone dry then repeat over and over untill 3 weeks is up. its also good to let the soil and plant dry out lil bit before cutting them down but its not necessary just helps them cure a bit quicker it seems i cut my cure time down by a few days by doin that but thats me... good luck! :blsmoke:

it's day 91 (51 of flowering), so the 7th week of blooms is getting on... harvest time is getting really close :hump:

watered again on sat, with just a splash of ffgb... that's the end of that!

leaves on minnie are getting very yellowed! seems almost like all of the fan leaves are going to fall off before too much longer! hope she lasts for another week, but maybe that's a sign that she's getting ready for harvest sooner than bertha... both of them seem to still have lots of white hairs. i guess the change-over from white to brownish is probably more exponential than linear...

no time for pics now, but i'll throw a couple up within the next few days and then do a full trich update at the 8th week of flowering.

totally waked and baked today... working on a pot roast now, literally and figuratively :blsmoke:

2 more weeks maybe 2 1/2 and then a good long cure of about 3-4 weeks and i guarantee your buds will taste bomb and you will be layed out on the couch.:eyesmoke: also are you giving them plain water right now? if so good if not just make sure you start, to rid all other taste's from them other than the buds taste.:blsmoke:
