DWC Root Slime Cure aka How to Breed Beneficial Microbes

anyone here run a RDWC/UC with the tea and without a chiller?
My friend built one a full cycle ago and I just showed him the way of the tea maybe two weeks ago. He was using just zho before. He doesnt use a chiller and has massive roots now. But he even gets massive roots in veg too. But everything else up till bloom is the same. Yet I have issues. Got to be my cloner..... But im fixing that.

I know about 5-6 or more growers around me that use DWC (they dont know I grow though), In fact we dont talk much anymore, but I was around for the first quite a few years while they were growing quite a lot. They showed me exactly what rumple shows in his DIY and have solid white roots with massive root mass. They never check ph or ppms and would laugh at me if I were to ever have asked them about it. They look at growing as the most simple thing. Mix nutes top off and leave.

Few differences from me are they used full chemical nute line, chlorinated water and RW for cloning. I liked there yeild and product (while growing) but IMO you final product is only as good as its drying and or curing techniques. They fail BIG time at these so there smoke was always just decent.

What does your current mix consists of?
My current mix is currently Great White, Aquashield and Subculture B AND M. Dont know exactly how many tsps of each I should be mixing into a 5 gallon bucket. Any help would be appreciated.

Heis, I know you had this somewhere in this 101 thread count but i didnt feel like taking 2-3 hours to read through all the post again. I'm wanting to inoculate my seeds before planting them.
I was gonna put 1 oz of tea in a gallon of RO water, then wet the napkin with the mixture and wait until the seeds opens up...But until then..I plan on just adding small amounts of water up untill the seed sprouts.
What are your views on this or is there a better way to go from inoculation and then germination?

That would be fine. I Choose to go completely sterile with seeds and sprouts, they are just so fragile. Chloramine (zone) and h2o2 is what I soak and water seedlings with.

Soak overnight in a glass, plant, keep them on a heating pad.

I like to soak the seed in water for 24 hours, most tap water would be fine. After the seed has sank to the bottom of the cup, I roll the wet seed around in some inoculant powder (mycogrow) and then plant it in a peat pellet or a rapid rooter plug that has been soaking in a mix of distilled water and tea. I use about 1oz of tea per half gallon, but it isn't important to be precise. After the seed sprouts I use an upside down clear cup to hold in humidity for a few days. With peat pellets I make sure to shore up the dirt around the stem as it grows to prevent air pruning until I can place it into a DWC.

I dislike the paper towel method because it's too easy to break the terminal root, but if I had to use this method I would not worry about inoculating the paper towel or infant seedling until transfer to medium.

I'm with you heisenburg. I have broken tap roots and also had some tap roots just stall and shrivel uP after touching them. Even with tweezers. Pisses you off because seeds are expensive.

woo! just read the entire thread over the last couple days. im having some problems seeing straight lol. Just wanted to say thank you Professor Heisenberg for sharing this knowledge. I just started brewing my tea last night. I wasn't sure about a couple items i put in the tea but i'll list everything i got. I didn't realize the formula was changed till this morning lol.

(2) gallon R/O water purified water from store

Xtreme gardening mykos (couldnt find the zho but was given a sample pack)

Ancient Forest (.5) cu ft

Big Worm Earthworm Castings

Aquashield

Great White

Earth Juice Mollases

I grow in a SB Aeroponic/NFT rail setup. iv noticed very low yields, but my yields are going up over last 2 harvests, lots of pm and generally brown roots.Im using the pbp lineup Grow, Bloom, Liquid Karma, Silica Blast, Aquashield,Hydroplex, Cal Mag, Sweet and do a clearex flush every 2-3 weeks. I don't have a chiller but been keeping res temps between 67-72 with frozen water bottles. Also i have 20 gallon reservoirs.

R2.jpg Can you tell me what you think of these roots?? these were from my last harvest went 65 days. Yield was subpar as well but quality was pretty good :)

I feel like I could be getting some of this in my rez, but I run ebb and flow. Whilst cleaning my pump filter of late, I have noticed an almost snot-like substance.

It's not on any of the roots whatsoever, nor can any of it be seen when the tray is flooding though. I am wondering if you think it could be the same thing?

My plants are in netpots and the roots look healthy. I use h2o2, 29% added @ 5ml/gallon every 5 days.

yes that is slime. It usually starts there, and will soon infect your plants, if hasn't already. This stuff is highly contagious. Fight it with the tea, if peroxide fails.

Hey Guys!

I have been trying out the Tea on some Habanero's that I transplanted from tiny soil pots to DWC. Next time I will definitely try from seed to spare the shock and insure no pests, but I really wanted to experiment with DWC so I ordered some plants off amazon.

They were super root-bound but have been transplanted into hydroton and a ~5g tote res. I had no idea they were going to be so old, but the receipt said 95 days post germination and still in 2" pots.. yikes! won't do that again.

I have been making the Tea exactly as instructed, about a gallon, mixing a handful of AF (EWC) into a filtration baggie meant for aquarium carbon, about 1/2 teaspoon MyCoGrow, 1/2 tablespoon of molassas, and putting 2 airstones with my 38lpm Eco Air pump. I let it brew 2 days, then add 1cup per gal to the res. I usually add half of that to the res, and the other half I do one cup or so poured down the roots per plant (two plants).

First off, my pH has been very stable around 5.8 using the Tea. I am running ~1.5 EC so far using Lucas and I've already had one pepper ripen and it was tasty hot. Water level started about an inch below the netpots, but I recently lowered it to about 2" since the plant looked overwatered and the roots were basically saturated.

Plants have been in DWC about 2 weeks now. I am seeing TONS of new root growth, just exploded in the last few days. MOST of the new growth is white...

BUT... several of the roots on one of my plants, the roots coming sideways out of the net pot (the fuzzy looking ones), have a black/dead spot that is very thin and weak, followed by a small section of root that is hanging perfectly lifelessly vertical and then ahother tiny black tip that looks withered.

So I dont see the blackness on any of the roots in the actual water, just the sideways growing roots that are 1-2" long coming out of the netpots. Some just have the black tip on the root, other have the two spots I describe above, where the root after the first bit of blackness is just hanging limp and decaying.

So... Pythium, or some other kind of root rot? I've already cut some of the yucky roots back and they look the same the next day.

I have not yet tried Spraying the roots with Bennes. Today is 3 days since last added Tea, so should I try more direct root contact with the Tea??

If this doesn't improve I will try completely washing the roots in a dilute h202 and maybe seeing if running lowgrate h2o2 is better for me with these plants. I know this is asking alot to transplant such old plants into Hydro, but the sheer amount of root growth is encouraging... now if I could just stop those black tips!

(I do have to be completely honest, I might have slightly goofed on my last tea brew. Forgot to add the molassas until about 8 hours after I started the brew.. but I did it first thing in the morning. could that mistake have allowed the bad guys to take over???? I don't recall seeing any black spots before the last treatment a few days ago.)

Thanks guys this thread has been very interesting to read. I read about 2/3 of it so apologies if similar issues have been solved. Hard to retain all 60 pages or so ;)

fyi here is a thead I made in gardening. pics are old, roots are like 5x that crazy now, but I will try to post a new root shot tonight showing affected areas.

I wold probably just top water a couple times to dreench those roots that are not sitting in water. If they are dead..well, they are dead and new roots will grow. Bottom line,I wouldn't worry about it.

thanks. only reason I worried was because two days ago I only saw 1 little root with the black tip, and now last time I looked it was like 5. and it was only on bran new roots.

I do top water through the net pots about 1 cup each plant, but I was wondering if I should also do a Tea-Spray on the roots themselves, since the roots that are turning black are sticking out sideways not really down much, so top-watering doesnt wet them much if at all. they do get plenty of water though. macro pic coming in a few hours.

It's probably just normal res build up. In any case slime does not affect the plants of a flood and drain. (although it may infect the res) You can try the tea if you want, it's probably a good idea, but don't feel as if you are on the verge of impending doom.

Thank you Heisenberg, I appreciate your response.

You have confirmed what I was thinking myself. It sounds like the tea is excellent regardless of any existing issues.

Thank you again for your time, I really appreciate it.

Heisenberg,

I am using the Undercurrent h2o system and have been experiencing the slime, I believe, it's either that or root rot. Now the system I have has 80+ gallons of water running through, so with this tea I am supposed to use 5 gallons for the first run in order to get rid of the slim?

Since it is a UC system you can probably add less. Try 1-2 gal. Just make sure you brew it properly for 48 hours.

Thanks Mr. bond
Also is sweet from botonicare ok to use instead of molasses?
I'll get the molasses but I already have sweet.

Oh, and I am using Pure blend pro hydro. line for my nutes currently. They are about 70% organics. Can I use these in conjuction with the tea and DWC or should I switch? I have been told by some that they have good results with PBP in dwc.

This tea should be able to be with ANY type product, as long as you have a good amount of the key 7 elements. Trichoderma, glomus, bacillus (the more types the better), GH Ancient forest, Food for microbes/ molasses, Lots of airation and 48 hours.
Alright so I can piece it together myself.
The problem I have is that I'm not sure how to get this stuff in Denmark (or Europe for that matter).
I know I can get trichoderma and molasses however I have no idea how to get glomus, bacillus nor Ancient Forest.

Do you any companies that make these? As it's very tough to find the single substances here.
