DWC Root Slime Cure aka How to Breed Beneficial Microbes

Weird, I got ZHO and EWC (made a teabag out of a coffee filter and a rubber band and wrapped it around an airstone) and made some tea with MycoGrow Soluble. It's been brewing for the past 24 hours and it has been FOAMING bubbles about 2-3 inches high, and there is something floating on top of the bubbles, like a wet brown dots.. Is that normal? When I got the ZHO, it looked like it was caked to the measuring spoon it came with and I had to scrape the powder from the ZHO jar to get it to fill up the spoon. Could the ZHO I bought be a bad batch?

I used the following recipe:

- 1 gallon RO water
- 1 tsp (5mL) Mycogrow soluble
- 1 tsp (5mL) ZHO powder
- 3/4 tbsp (11.25 mL) unsulfured molasses
- 1/8 cup (30 mL) EWC

Also, there's like a ring of slime coating the edge of the tub at foam level. Is this normal?

BTW, if you want to add Paenibacillus azotofixansfrom from Voodoo Juice to the tea, it is available for $12 in Whitney Farms Organic & Natural Tomato & Vegetable Food (4 Lbs) on ebay for about $14. Not sure if that is comparable to the amount of Paenibacillus azotofixans in Voodoo Juice, but hey, were breeding more microbes with the Tea anyway, right?

...."Specially formulated to produce a bountiful harvest. It is:
  • Ideal for a wide variety of vegetables
  • Feeds with protein based nitrogen, not manure (No more manure odor)
  • Formula is low to no dust
  • Stimulates root development increasing nutrient uptake as well as water efficiency for plants
  • GUARANTEED ANALYSIS: Total nitrogen 3%, Available Phosphate 4%, Soluable Potash 2%, Calcium 2%
  • Derived from: Feather meal, fish meal, blood meal, meat and bone meal, calcium carbonate and sulfate of potash

I tried Hydro Guard with little results but Voodoo Juice works and from what ive read, its this Paenibacillus that is the key microbe in Voodoo Juice that makes it the shit.

So im having a issue that i have googled for countless days and have not seen any pictures that look remotely close to mine. Im new to doing hydro setups, but i have recently been cursed with what im going to classify as The Brown Algae. and i have done multiple flushes, cleaned the roots used a H2O2 solution and soaked all of my equipment, even went out and bought new reservoirs and soaked them good before use. but i have 2 1.5 gallon reservoirs and a 4 inch airstone in each. one reservoir has just one train wreck female in 4 week of flowering and the other reservoir has 3 new auto flowering females and i cant seem to get rid of this slime. I ordered the supplies to brew a tea but it will be a week before they get here so is their any recommendations of what else i can try in the meantime or something that will permanently get rid of this stuff. i use RAW GROW, RAW BLOOM, and RAW CAL/MAG nutrients that i bought from a local hydro store and i have been following the directions on the back of the bags but still no luck. Heres some pictures.

As far as I know, no one has ever reused the compost after one batch. I assume much microlife is still present, but to ensure the greatest diversity you should always start fresh. The mycogrow powder has all the microbe strains zho+aquashield has and many more. It did not come with any measuring scoop, so I just poured a little in. I suppose it was probably equal to the small end on the ZHO scoop. I am very happy with the product and don't plan on using AS or ZHO any more.

If you are not adding organic ferts to the res, then the bennies should have a negligible effect on the PH. If you knock some roots loose when changing water or something it's possible the PH might be effected slightly for a short time as they decay, but I have not noticed this in my grows. My PH stays pretty stable and the flux seems to be in tune with the plant growth.

Homebrewer has a ongoing journal where he is testing great white, you guys might wanna follow along. He also confirms that bennies do not effect the PH.

Hey Heisenburg, I have floranova organic nutrients and jungle juice synthetic from AN. Which is better to use with the tea in my non recirculating dwc?

Also the products I am brewing with is great white, EWC liquid concentrate from my grow shop, and mollases. Is this sufficient and how much great white should I use in 2 gal? I have no aquashield or zho. thank you!

Im wondering; my MILs tap water comes at PPM 98 an a PH 7.4 now CVS distilled water an poland springs comes with a higher PPM reading about 150 i think i know they dont have chlorine if its very little. Question is i let some of my MILs tap water sit for about a week would this be safe to use to brew the tea an feed my plants or should i just stick to store bought water when brewing the tea?

I use the same but the soil looken ECW and a full scoop of great white, my soil plants love it and my hydro plants that were stunted for about 2-3 months came back to life an have beautiful white roots. Ill post pics of the ones that were stunted an the roots.

Organics with DWC is a bad idea. It invites all sorts of problems, including slime, and offers no objective benefits.

That should make a fine tea. The only reason to go "balls out" is for personal pleasure. It just feels good to hit the slime with a bazooka even though a handgun will probably do the job. Having a very diverse tea is theoretically better and for most of us is easy to do, but those who cannot find a variety of products shouldn't worry. Most of the time just EWC/molasses is enough to make a good tea, and along with correcting flaws in environment and methodology, should take care of a slime problem.

and what are you referring to as the bazooka? Would that be aquashield or zho powder? I thought that great white had components from both and covered all the bases. Am I wrong? If possible I would like to make my brew stronger, more bazooka-like, I've been using the tea for a week or so now, done 2 batches and going to need to start a 3rd soon. My roots definitely are moving in the right direction but not seeing explosive growth like I would prefer.

I use one of these per 6 buckets, with regular blue 6 inch air stones. I use the stones for about 3-4 cycles and then clean them under the tap with a brush, boil them, and reuse.

I have a industrial pump an wouldnt change for the world im actually gonna get another one so i can run another res with 6 plants. My question is would my tap water after setting out for 24 hrs an some prime/sodium thiosulfate ( chlorine remover) be sufficient enough to make tha tea? My tap is 90PPM
7.5PH

These are new plants an ones that were stunted for months thats y i have such a stretch on the new plants they were doin it to get more light but it was an experiment an i found out the info i wanted.

ive been having root issues lately ,brown slime. evereytime i see it appear i h202 bath it .i am using fox farm trio . currently only the grow big as my plants are in veg 3 weeks old.
i just checked my roots. they look nice right now. i added about 5ml of h202 in each bucket and frozen bottle of water. i got a thermometer and the temps in the res is under 70.
i have the hps on for 13-15 hours and then when i go to sleep i close the closet door and use cfls so the temps stay cool.
so during the day i will be replacing frozen water bottles to keep temps in the bucket down.i ordered a quart of hydroguard & it will be a few days before it gets here so hopefully the h202 will keep the res clean till then.
should i also get foxfarm kangaroots with the hydroguard?or some kind of microbrew for roots or is the hydroguard enough?

i have unco earth worm castings & hydroguard.i was looking for a zho substitute will "extreme gardening mykos work"??
I do my tea with just EWC (earth worm castings) an Great White with a bit of SOS. I dont think the mykos is water soluble cuz its made to be put in soil but for the time being i would run the EWC an hydroguard useing distilled or spring water in the entire rez if useing distilled u might need to add cal-mag.
