DWC Root Slime Cure aka How to Breed Beneficial Microbes

Many of us see biofilms in our buckets. Sometimes my airstones look new and clean, but just as often they are covered in a layer of snot. The sides of my buckets get slick as well. The difference is that the roots are not affected and grow just fine. I will trust you when you say you are sure it is slime, and not just biolfilm. You would have to treat the res like the cloner from page 69 of this thread. There are no roots, so add housing for the bennies and add more tea every other day. Even if it is the slime, your plants should be just fine in an ebb and flow. The roots spend too much time in air for the slime to thrive on them. It can still cause Ph swings in your res and what not, but it should not threaten your strains. Change your nutes and you will be fine. Switch to GH three part, or dutch master, or any synthetic chemical line. Floranova can not be used in slime prone systems.

IS FLORANOVA SERIES ORGANIC?
Answer: FloraNova Grow and Bloom contain 3-5% organic substances creating the marriage between mineral and organic gardening.

What about 3% h2o2? Do I need to dilute it and if so, how or what ratio? Thanks

3% does not need to be diluted, it can be sprayed directly on the roots. If you are going to use it regularly in your res, you should get the high grade stuff, 29-35%, and dilute it accordingly. You can easily find posts on RUI for the correct dilution rates, depending on the concentration you get. The 3% drug store stuff has some preservatives that are not good to leave in the res constantly, but it's fine to use it for periodic sterilization.

Well I was going to use it to clean that shit off my roots. I dont know if you saw I posted a pic of my slimy roots on the previous page. Heisenberg, I am about to try the tea but before I do so, I want to thank you for sharing your research and experience with this. Also taking the time out to create such a informative thread.!!! +REP!!!

Those roots are very savable, depending on the stage of growth. If they were near harvest I wouldn't bother, but I see they are not, and that only one of your buckets is afflicted. I would be suspicious of this bucket, is it near a heat source? Is the airstone working properly? Is it somehow getting less bubbles than the others? Anyway, an h202 treatment followed by a good flush/rinse and tea should fix everything fairly quickly.

I read page 69 and question: you mean I'll need to change my res every day?
Nope, I mean that without roots to feed the microbes (the plant sends food down for them) the bennies starve even faster than normal, so re-add them daily or every other day. Housing, like lava rocks, helps give them a place to thrive.

They are veggin right now...the plant on the right is the one that has the slimy roots.

I think I screwed up because my res might of been over full and the net pot was about 1/4 submerged in the res. I heard that is not good? Not sure if its a myth or what. My res temps were around 73 F so I know now to keep it around 65 F? I think that was my problem. Not sure cause I am a nOOb.

Ah I see. I just checked the temp in my res and its 66F. Does the slime thrive in cold? Also will a little warmth help the tea along when its brewing?
So I'll clean and change the res, switch nutes and soak my pump etc in physan for a while again. and I'll dose the res with tea again. thanx.

Yo gang. Been brewing my tea with mycrogrow soluble, ewc, molasses and a dash of roots excellerator. Not much of a foam build up:(. Took the bucket off the cold concrete floor and on to a shelf ...boom! Foam explosion. Looked like low tide in the bucket. Week 3, massive roots, MASSIVE uptake, steady as he goes.

hey DWC'ers been reading up on making my tea and talkin to a good few folks over on the forum im active on, i have purchased great white, and the nice member im talking to tells me all he uses is ancient forrest, blackstrap mollases and greatwhite and hasent had a problem in 3 full grows, so i think il try that and its hard to source this stuff in the uk!!

my question is, can the tea be frozen or would this kill the BB? and if not roughly how long does it last before it goes off, my system has 125L of recirculating nutesw roughly so will need to add every few days from what im reading on this thread??

All you ever need to make the tea is an inoculant that contains fungi and bacteria. You can buy these separately with products like sub-b or ZHO, or you can buy them together with products like mycogrow or great white. Technically the ancient forest contains both, so you can only use that if you wish. It all depnds on your slime problem, if you are preventing or curing, ect. The more diverse the tea, the more effective it will be. If you have no slime problem currently, or once it is cured, you can fall back to a preventative dosage of 1 cup per 10 gallon and inoculate as little as once per week.

Freezing the tea will kill most microbes and cause the others to go dormant. The tea lasts about 10 days in the fridge.

Thanks you sir, im using as a preventative for bad stuff as i lost 4 plants to rot last grow, im recirulating in undercurremt type system so 1 goes they all go this time, so am taking measures to stop any bad guys getting in there in the first place,

Got wormcastings, blackstrap mollases and great white so far, do i just bung it all in the panty hose or must my castings be all thats in there? And add the rest to the water? Great threadate il be pointing a few here that i know will appreciate all the effort uve put in, thanks for taking time to answer!

You only need to put your castings in the sock, you can brew it with out the sock and strain after brewing as well but the latter is much more tidy.

Cheers.

T-minus 17 hours here till 48 hours of brewing complete! I was wondering how long will it take to notice if its working or not?
