Note the part where younger people are being admitted with serious complications ...

“The last days are showing a younger population involved as if the elderly and weaker part of the population crashed early and now younger patients, having exhausted their physiological reserves, come to overcrowded, overwhelmed hospitals with little resources left.” ...

It won't be just the old.

'Get ready': Italian doctors warn Europe
... In the note, sent to the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, critical care experts Professor Maurizio Cecconi, Professor Antonio Pesenti and Professor Giacomo Grasselli, from the University of Milan, revealed how difficult it had been to treat coronavirus patients. They said: “We are seeing a high percentage of positive cases being admitted to our intensive care units (ICUs), in the range of 10 per cent of all positive patients... We wish to convey a strong message: Get ready!”

They said Italian hospitals had seen “a very high” number of intensive care patients who were admitted “almost entirely” for severe lung failure caused by the virus and needing ventilators to help them breathe. They said hospitals across the UK and Europe needed to prepare for a surge in admissions and cautioned against working “in silos”. They said it was vital hospitals had equipment to protect staff and that staff were trained in wearing the kit. They added: “Increase your total ICU capacity. Identify early hospitals that can manage the initial surge in a safe way. Get ready to prepare ICU areas where to cohort Covid-19 patients – in every hospital if necessary.”...

... In a separate note, Italian intensive care doctor Giuseppe Nattino, from the Lecco province in northern Italy, has shared a clinical summary of the patients his unit has been treating, which doctors described as “frightening” in terms of what it could mean for the UK. The technical note spells out how patients with coronavirus experience a severe infection in all of their lungs, requiring major ventilation support. It also reveals the effect of the virus, which affects blood pressure, the heart, kidneys and liver with patients needing sustained treatment...

... In an alarming development, Dr Nattino said younger patients were being affected, saying the ages of patients ranged from 46 to 83 with only a small number having important underlying conditions. He added: “The last days are showing a younger population involved as if the elderly and weaker part of the population crashed early and now younger patients, having exhausted their physiological reserves, come to overcrowded, overwhelmed hospitals with little resources left.” ...

This is very bad news and a preview of things to come here, America's response ain't like Korea's or even Italy's, it will be more like Iran's after starting out like China by trying to suppress data and information. Insurance companies might collapse for fuck sake, who is gonna pay for the care of tens of millions of Americans?

Several vaccines have been developed around the world, but not tested, someone is gonna break protocol and start issuing untested vaccines, the lab rats will be the people, if it seems to work, others will use it too. Old fashioned empirical science will end up being the guide, like it or not. This will be a political decision and not one made by scientists and doctors.

I've read that some researchers think how your immune system reacts to the virus is very important. Weak immune system people die and some healthy adults immune systems over react to the virus and that can kill you too. It's basically the lottery, do you feel lucky?
Imagine what they are thinking in that assisted care facility called the US senate, with lots of public contact etc, most of those old farts are sitting ducks and are now realising that aquitting Donald wasn't such a good idea after all. He was fucking this up while they let him off the hook and now they are not only on the hook for Donald, but fucked too.

This is another take on the info posted earlier....

Coronavirus: Expert's worst-case scenario is 96 million infected in US with up to 500,000 dead
A doctor has advised hospitals to prepare for up 96 million coronavirus infections and 500,000 potential deaths as a worst-case scenario for the potential extent of the outbreak, leaked documents reveal.

The documents, obtained by Business Insider, come from a presentation made during a webinar hosted by the American Hospital Association (AHA).

Dr James Lawler, a professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Centre, shared a series of slides with attendees about what his "best guess" was when estimating how the outbreak could impact hospitals and health officials. His webinar, titled "What healthcare leaders need to know: Preparing for the COVID-19", was presented on 26 February.

He estimated 96 million could become infected, and of those people 480,000 could die from the coronavirus based on how the virus might spread.

https://news.yahoo.com/coronavirus-experts-worst-case-scenario-224941707.html

I've heard elsewhere it could be as high as 3 million dead but even so the lower estimate of 500,000 is still way too many.

Don't forget about the prison system. Thousands of prisoners cycle in and out of jails, holding facilities, and prisons a day. A virus like this will absolutely rip through the population, and more significantly, through the staff that isn't equipped with ppe.

As staff begins to call in sick, the prisons will go into lock down and prisoners will die from lack of care stuck in place.

Also, the prisoners being released will likely have a high infection rate and they will go right back into urban areas with no follow up.

It is going to be a huge kill off.

Take the average age of the US senate and calculate how many are gonna croak based on the mortality rate for their age group, we could run a pool on how many senators will croak before election day. How many out of 100 will go down before election day?

We can only hope. But if the same thing happens at scotus, it will be the end of reality as we know it.

Iran emptied its prisons, think Trump will in an election year?

Trump officials unsure how many people tested for coronavirus
Top federal health officials on Saturday said they don't know how many people in the U.S. have been tested for coronavirus — or how many will need to be in the coming weeks.

The health officials, in an untelevised briefing at the White House, also defended President Donald Trump's claim on Friday that anyone seeking a test can get one, even as state officials voice frustration with the availability of tests.

Federal government labs have tested specimens for 1,583 people, but the Trump administration does not have figures for the numbers of people tested at state and local labs, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn told reporters. They said said that 5,861 specimens have been tested across the country, but it's not clear how many people that translates to because each test requires multiple specimens and people get multiple tests.

The administration has previously struggled to communicate how many tests have been conducted. Azar last Sunday said more than 3,600 people had been tested, but two days later Anne Schuchat, a top CDC official, testified in the Senate that more than 3,000 specimens had been taken from 500 people — a fraction of what Azar claimed.

If this didn't involve people dying their incompetence would be funny. Unfortunately that's not the case.

I wonder how the senate feels, scared I'll bet. We also got an answer on the rallies, he'll keep holding them.

Trump 'not concerned at all' as coronavirus hits DC

Trump is "not concerned at all” as virus impacts CPAC, DC
“I’m not concerned at all.”

That was President Donald Trump's response to reporters who asked if he was worried about being exposed to coronavirus after an attendee at CPAC, which he had been to, tested positive for the virus and Washington, DC announced a presumptive positive case.

The President was also asked if he would consider canceling political rallies with the virus spreading, but he said no.

“We’ll have tremendous rallies. We’re doing very well. We’ve done a fantastic job, with respect to that subject, on the virus,”
Trump said.

The President was speaking alongside Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro ahead of their dinner at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida

Coronavirus: Are women and children less affected? (BBC)
Coronavirus: Are women and children less affected?

Women seem to be less likely to die from coronavirus than men; and children appear to be less likely to die than other age groups.

What's saving women's lives?
You might be surprised there's a difference between men and women's death rates from coronavirus, but scientists aren't. We see the same effect in a wide range of infections including flu. Part of the answer is men are generally in worse health than women due to lifestyle choices like smoking. "Smoking damages your lungs, that's not going to be a winner," says Dr MacDermott. This may be a particular problem in the China where estimates suggest 52% of men in smoke compared with just 3% of women.... there are also differences in the way the immune systems of men and women respond to infection.
"Women have intrinsically different immune responses to men, women are more likely to suffer from auto-immune diseases and there is good evidence that women produce better antibodies to vaccines against flu," says Prof Paul Hunter, from the University of East Anglia.

Can children get coronavirus and what are the symptoms?
Yes they can catch coronavirus, the youngest cases have been only days old.
There is very limited information on the symptoms of Covid-19 in children, but they appear to be mild - fever, runny nose and a cough.
..in childhood our immune systems are immature and they tend to overreact, it is why fevers (a high temperature) are so common. An immune system going into overdrive is always a bad thing because it can damage the rest of the body and is one of the reasons coronavirus can be deadly.
"You'd expect it to go haywire and it's not doing that," said Dr MacDermott.
"There must be something this virus does that is not as readily stimulating the immune system in children, but what that is is unclear.”

Why is coronavirus deadly at all?
The coronavirus starts with a fever and a cough, these are symptoms many of us will deal with at winter. But the virus can cause the immune system to over-react. One of the more severe symptoms is acute respiratory distress syndrome caused by widespread inflammation in the lungs.
...It leaves the lungs unable to get enough oxygen in and carbon dioxide out of the blood. It can stop the kidneys from cleaning the blood and damage the lining of your intestines.
Dr Pankhania adds: "The virus sets up such a huge degree of inflammation that you succumb... it becomes multi-organ failure."

Why are older people dying?
This is a combination of two things - a weaker immune system in the first place and a body less able to cope. We know our immune system gets weaker with age.

'Doomed from the Start.' Experts Say the Trump Administration's Coronavirus Response Was Never Going
to Work

In congressional testimony, in medical webcasts and in private discussions with health officials, they warned that the unique features of this flu-like virus made it impossible to control, and that the administration must use any time that containment measures might buy to prepare the country for an inevitable outbreak. The administration was using all its resources to blockade the doors, they warned, but the enemy was likely already in the house.

When it finally became indisputable that an outbreak was underway in Washington state, the administration was slow to catch up. There were not enough COVID-19 testing kits, hotlines were overwhelmed, and hospitals and public health departments were hobbled by a lack of reliable statistics on the spread of the disease. Experts say the U.S. response is now likely weeks—if not months—behind schedule.

Official: White House didn't want to tell seniors not to fly (WTF)
https://apnews.com/921ad7f1f08d7634bf681ba785faf269

NEW YORK (AP) — The White House overruled health officials who wanted to recommend that elderly and physically fragile Americans be advised not to fly on commercial airlines because of the new coronavirus, a federal official told The Associated Press.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention submitted the plan this week as a way of trying to control the virus, but White House officials ordered the air travel recommendation be removed, said the official who had direct knowledge of the plan. Trump administration officials have since suggested certain people should consider not traveling, but they have stopped short of the stronger guidance sought by the CDC.

The person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity did not have authorization to talk about the matter. The person did not have direct knowledge about why the decision to kill the language was made.

On Friday, the CDC quietly updated its website to tell older adults and people with severe medical conditions such as heart, lung or kidney disease to “stay home as much as possible” and avoid crowds. It urges those people to “take actions to reduce your risk of exposure,” but it doesn’t specifically address flying.

Vice President Mike Pence, speaking Saturday after meeting with cruise ship industry leaders in Florida, targeted his travel advice to a narrower group: older people with serious health problems.

“If you’re a senior citizen with a serious underlying health condition, this would be a good time to practice common sense and to avoid activities including traveling on a cruise line,” Pence said, adding they were looking to cruise line officials for action, guidance and flexibility with those passengers.
